How to unlock the Zoologist achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 - Definitive Guide

Welcome one and all to Zoologist - one of the easiest but most time-consuming achievements in Red Dead Redemption 2. I'll get right to the point - if you're here for a straight-up video guide, I suggest using the video linked below, else, continue reading for a full list and tips.

The Video

This video is an invaluable asset when going for this achievement - the video guide has locations for every animal in the game. In nearly all cases you will find the animal in the exact same place as the video, or if not, in the general vicinity. You can also perform the reload trick to respawn all the wildlife in the area (Save Game > Exit Game > Reload).

How to Study

To study an animal, you need to hold cn_RB whilst looking at an animal you have not previously studied. There are two ways to do this:

- Aim your weapon at the animal at close range (whilst it isn't attacking).
- Study it from a distance with the binoculars.

Generally speaking, I would always opt for the second option if possible.

I would suggest finishing the story first and studying as many animals as you can naturally through playing. Nothing on this list is missable. You can also buy the Legend of the East Satchel, which will give you 99 storage on everything, including Predator Bait, Herbivore Bait and Cover Scent Lotion. You will either need to craft this during the story, or buy it from a Fence once the Epilogue is complete.

NOTE: the unique animals in chapter 5 (Guarma Island) are not needed, neither is the Carolina Parakeet or a certain special dog which I won't name because spoilers. This is the reason for there being missing numbers in the list.

I would suggest combining this achievement with the following as they go hand in hand:

Red Dead Redemption 2Skin DeepThe Skin Deep achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 worth 239 pointsSkin every species of animal in Story Mode.

Hints & Tips

EAGLE EYE
Click cn_LS and cn_RS together to activate Eagle Eye, allowing you to see animals and their tracks. You are taught how to use this as part of one the first missions in the game and you will need it. A lot.

COVER YOUR STINK
When hunting, ALWAYS use Cover Scent Lotion - it will allow you get closer to animals without them running away. Your character gets very stinky very quickly, so unless you fancy taking a bath every 10-15 minutes this is your best option.

PREDATORS
Panthers, Cougars and Wolves will attack on site, stopping you from studying them. There are 2 ways to solve this:

- Use Cover Scent Lotion and Predator Bait (for Panthers you need Potent Predator Bait) to lure them to a specific spot. This only works sporadically in my experience, and on most occasions they will still attack you, ignoring the bait.
- Use a poison arrow to wound the animal. This is your safest bet - you will need to craft a few poison arrows and then hit the animal with a body shot whilst it is attacking. Once you've hit it, it will run off and collapse, this is when you can study it.

SMALL BIRDS
Nearly all of the small birds can be found in the Raonoke Valley, lining the river. To find them, use your binoculars and scan the rocks at the side of the river. Up north of the river there is a waterfall where a lot of the rarer birds spawn (Robin, Blue Jay, Cardinal, Sparrow).

THE ELUSIVE HUSKY
There is a farm at Manzanita Post just south-west of Blackwater where the Husky is a guaranteed spawn. As far as I'm aware this is the single spawn of this dog in the whole game.

SUPER RARE MOOSE
The Western Bull Moose is probably the rarest spawn in the game. In the video they are hunting in the Grizzlies, but an alternate location is Owanjila Lake. Create a save whilst standing on the bridge and keep reloading from there. After a time you should see the Moose swimming across the lake.

SNAKES!
The easiest method of finding a snake is to ride around the area on your horse until a red dot appears on the map - this means that a snake has tried to attack you. Loop back quickly and you should be able to find it in the area where the dot appeared. You can use eagle eye to track it.

IF AT FIRST...
For everything on this list, you can use the 'reload' trick (Save Game > Exit Game > Reload), this will respawn all the wildlife in the area. This is also how you can get 3-star pelts easier, as you can reload the same animal until it is a 3-star. This is particularly useful for domestic animals. On most farms you can find chickens/roosters, pigs, cows and bulls. When you find one particular breed, you can save and reload and the breed has a chance to respawn as one of the others required.

If you think anything needs adding, please let me know in the comments - and if you're having trouble getting a specific animal, please post in the comments and myself and others can try to point you in the right direction :)

Already spent a long time looking around Lemoyne and 4 other places where they can spawn. Spawns are not guaranteed. Finally found one East of Lagras in the wetlands if anyone else has issues with this owl, try there at night.

Something I noticed for farm animals (chicken/rooster cow/bull etc.) is that if I found one and it wasn't the right breed or gender, just simply running away for about a minute or so in any direction was enough for them to be different as soon as I came back.

I had a leghorn rooster at a little farm in a small enclosure (with some chickens) in Rhodes, but I wanted a Domonique rooster. I ran away and came back and it had magically changed to a Dominique rooster. Same thing happened with the Hereford, Angus and Devon bulls. Ran away came back and they'd conveniently changed breed 3 times in a row!

Great tip on the western moose! Spent hours searching and eventually tried your method. Worked after about 20 minutes.

Both of the moose spawn to the west of Blackwater. If you look on the map go to the second L in Tall Trees. A hair to the south east from it between midnight and 7am they can spawn there.

Also another busy spot for at least 10 bird species is the mini islands on the dokato River, specifically the one by the railway bridge that leads to the ocean. Found pigeons (both types), orioles blue Jay etc there

@Fooga thanks that spot for the Moose worked for me. Had to reload 7 or 8 times to get the one I needed to show up. The spot is pretty much exactly where the lady slipper orchid is so if you don't know there area look up this map for the orchid go there and find it and you'll have a better idea of where to find a moose.

Thanks for the video. Owls were definitely the hardest for me to get as well, and I went through about 10+ locations and 4+ hours before I found them. Biggest problem i had was that I just couldn’t focus on them. Even if they were close to me it still wouldn’t allow me to study.

^ a good spot for small birds is just north of the tracker west of Van Horn. There is a little bridge near the bent trees. A bird always spawns. If it’s not the one you want, run back to the tracker and then return. It will be different.

From the beginning, study, kill and skin any animal that cross your way. A hard time consuming achievement.

By netstryker on 18 Mar 2019 01:08
For the aggressive predators, don't worry about bait. For cougars and panthers, you can climb up on a rock. They'll stare at you for a minute, lose interest, and walk away... now you can study. For wolves, if you kill a few in the pack the last couple will usually lose aggro to run.

If you're having trouble studying the panthers, you can hit them with a poison arrow. Just make sure not to headshot them. They'll run away and collapse. You can walk up to them and study them that way.

So I put the game down a bit ago and I’m at work now, but I want to ask before I forget: Will the animals that I’ve not gotten show up as “unknown” or similar in the compendium so I do not have to guess where I’m missing? I’m referring to Zoologist and not skin deep, Skin deep I’ll need to start fresh keeping track.

Animals are added to the compendium once they are studied OR killed, so if you have killed something before studying it, it may still be in the compendium. It'll be a blank space if its not been seen at all, and their scent trail will also say unknown.

It will say on their entry in the compendium whether they have been studied and/or skinned though, so you could go through that way and tick things off.

It's useful to use this as I found it easier to mark off what I still needed side by side on a notepad doc. You can see your progress in the compendium a lot easier I think.

Just got the Western Bull Moose after way too many hours spent at all different locations. Colter method from that popular YT vid finally worked for me. Slept in Valentine, rode up to Colter intersection, camped until night, walked up at 5:00am, got it at 6:00am time with 2 attempts at a spawn trigger by walking back to the rock. I recorded 5 minutes of footage as soon as it popped

Finally unlocked this achievement. The Java Rooster was my last one. This list was a great help. Reddit was also fantastic because they showed the best locations for some of the most elusive birds. The birds were the worst. The island above Bard's Crossing was excellent when it came to finding a lot of the tiny birds that could only be picked up.

Thanks for the guide. I was struggling to find Rio Grande Wild Turley. This one was insane. Spend around 4 hours to finally find it. For those who had no luck to find, the best spawn location is on the Rio del Lobo rock around 6 a.m 12.p.m

Just save the game on the rock with a camp and if it did not spawn reload your save.

Cedar Wax Wing flock flies over the crossroads between Valentine and Emerald ranch every morning at 10am. About 6-8 birds (spent the area here trying to find robins).

The western moose and bull moose spawn just a bit south of the Veteran's hut near Annesberg. If you do the save/reload trick, you'll find a moose or bull moose on the rock outcropping next to the lake, just south of the hut itself.

None of the owl locations in that video worked me, except the on the mast but it was not that one in the video, and it was the only one I had. The mast one is a bad idea as you have to get a boat and it takes ages. You cannot reload from the island or camp to speed up time. I also tried Tall Trees and Aurora Basin. Nothing at Radley's House. I struggled for ages, took about 5 hours. Found the two I needed immediately at the spots in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xWAmZpHju0

1. Great Horned Owl spawned time and time again, I just couldn't get close enough.
2. Didn't try.
3. Again, first time and the Californian Horned Owl spawned the first time.

Both within 30 seconds.

The way I did it for all animals was to wait for a few minutes, scout the whole visible area with the binoculars and then reload if I didn't see what I was looking for. Most animals seem to appear in your field of vision straight away if they are going to appear, but they could technically appear anywhere in the area. Occasionally I would sleep at a fire until morning and make another manual save just to refresh it.

I think with the Moose I did move around a few times after reloading (bridge, rocks and lakeside). It seems to switch up whether you are leaning against something, kneeling or at a campfire. As long as you're still on or near the edge of the lake though you should be fine. You can also try switching it up between Morning, Afternoon and Evening to see if that helps. It was early morning when I found it.

It's all still a bit trial and error in the end unfortunately. I think it took me an hour of searching Grizzlies and then 45 minutes at Owanjila before the Moose finally spawned. I've been hunting a Coastal Horned Owl for 3-4 hours now with no luck, last one I need!!

I've made a simple Excel spreadsheet using crewdy4923's confirmed list of animals that are required. Hopefully this can help you guys keep track of the animals easier, rather than going into the compendium every time.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VgG8fRRESEdAylPjWR8H-trhhsz...

Download the file off Google Drive, and make changes as you go along. Simply change the "N" to a "Y" once you've skinned/studied the animal. Some animals (mainly birds) only need to be studied, and this is indicated by a "-" in the "Skinned" column.

The % completion at the bottom should correspond with the achievement tracker, save for a few rounding errors, so you'll know you're on the right track.

This will also help with:
Red Dead Redemption 2Skin DeepThe Skin Deep achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 worth 239 pointsSkin every species of animal in Story Mode.

EDIT: Fellas, download the file and access it using your own native spreadsheet app on your computer (or reupload to your own Google Drive if you don't have one and use it from there). I will not respond to any requests to share access to the file because I don't want to risk it getting messed up for everyone else.

The excel sheet was great. I was able to use it to to target more animals in a given region after figuring out what I had left to do. I really like the progress marker at the bottom. Made the whole thing more enjoyable. Thanks for your hard work!

Hints & Tips

EAGLE EYE
Click L3 and R3 together to activate Eagle Eye, allowing you to see animals and their tracks.

A FEW OF THE VERY RARE ONES
There are a few animals that are very rare spawns. Below are some alternate locations from the video which may help.

020. Cedar Waxwing (and other small birds) - These spawn in groups at Manteca Falls, south of Thieves Landing.
047. Siberian Husky - Manzanita Post
079. Western Bull Moose - Owanjila Lake (save and reload, he should spawn crossing the lake)
080. Western Moose - Far North-East by Willard's Rest, by the Waterfall

In your inventory is a pair of binoculars and equipping them will allow you to study animals (as long as they're mostly visible) by holding down . You can actually study many animals if you're close enough to them when you're aiming at them; the binoculars just make it easier. You can check your progress on this via Progress => Compendium => Animals. If the picture of the animal has a full white bar under it, you've done everything you can with that animal – i.e. studied it, tracked it, killed it and skinned it. If there's not a full white bar, select the pictured animal and see if "studied" says "yes" under it. Although you will ultimately want to have a full white bar under the animal, due to Skin Deep.

NOTE: Any animal that is unique to Guarma Island, visited in Chapter 5, doesn't count towards this trophy – this includes the Carolina Parakeet, the Blue and Yellow Macaw, the Green Macaw, the Scarlet Macaw, the Red-footed Booby, the Red Boa, the Rainbow Boa, the Sunglow Boa and the Fer-de-Lance Rattlesnake. Also not required are Rufus the dog (found in the Epilogue) and all Legendary animals.

A video guide with absolutely all the animals, and there is a timecode in the description, which makes the search even easier. The list of animals in the video is in the same order as in the game, and I just found the animals I was missing and went for them.

About all predators and the Florida panther in particular.
She will find you faster than you will find her, so shoot the body with a poisoned arrow. After this, you will have the opportunity to calmly study the animal.

Don't be lazy: study the animals during the game, not forgetting to shoot and skin them afterwards. Thus, after the epilogue you will have collected almost the entire reference book on the fauna of the Wild West and only some rare species of animals and small birds will remain.

If you need a translation of the name of the animal to make it clearer, here is the Link . Here, too, everything is in order, as in the directory, and you yourself can roughly find the animal you need.

For those who suffered with the panther like me. I was driving to Saint-Denis at night (if, of course, the time of day plays an important role in this), and this bastard was simultaneously chasing a wild boar. Then she saw me and ran after me. Luckily I had time to study it. All that remained was to track it down and skin it. I am attaching a photo, maybe it will help someone. And yes, after I killed her, her icon immediately appeared on the map.

If you have a problem with the fact that the Florida cougar spawns, but the panther does not spawn. Then I recommend once again leaning away from the cougar. Then there is a greater chance that a big cat will spawn again.

Birds, as I understand it, you don’t have to pluck everything, just study it, I got a trophy with several ordinary birds that were killed and not killed, but were studied, the rest of the animals must be studied and skinned
Got a trophy with 172/178, several animals were from the island

The trophy must be combined with Skin Deep / To the Bone. (maybe these trophies are skippable!!!) UPD: animals from the island are not needed
In the fifth chapter, you go to an island that you will never return to! This island has animals (eg parrots, crabs) found only there. Whether these animals count towards the trophy is still unknown. Therefore, it is better to play it safe and catch them. If you don’t want to look for them yourself, you can make a separate save in this chapter and come back later when you know the list of all the animals needed for the trophy.

I ran into a problem when I was hunting a legendary wolf and a bug arose. The killed wolf instantly disappeared; as a result, the skin was not removed and there is no entry in the directory. Hands dropped. But after playing for another 10 minutes, a notification about an entry in the directory suddenly appeared and it indicated that the animal had been skinned.

If you run to the place where an animal spawns (which you looked at in some guide), but it is not there, then save - the story - exit the game and enter again. I couldn’t find a few snakes on guarma (I know that they are not needed for the trophy, but I wanted to study all the animals in the game) and they immediately began to appear. This scheme should work everywhere
