How to unlock the Collector's Item achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 - Definitive Guide
Tip for the cigarette cards: You find them in good cigarettes so you can just go to general store and spend 500-700$ on those and you'll get all 144. It'll save a lot of time if you don't mind spending big amount of money.

This achievement seems to be glitched for me. I've unlocked three collectable strands - Points of interest, graves & cigarette cards and still hasn't popped.

I did this, got all 144 cards and mailed them off then got rewards, but the achievement didn't unlock any idea why?

Achievement you need to get either:
- all 10 Rock Carvings
-12 Cigarette Card of one Cigarette Cards Set
- 30 Dinosaur Bones
- the Dreamcatchers don't count!
For the Cigarette Card there is a Quest that starts here, and so is for the Rock Carvings and Dinosaur Bones. If you don't like Video Guides here is my Map where you can get the Location and find it yourself. Since there are so many not everyone has Screen shot and Description yet:

Take the upvote just for the fact you have a map of all the locations. The video guides are great, but I like something I can see, mark my map, and go without any other fuss.

Good guide but I had to downvote because unless I'm a idiot there's a spoiler there.

The best way for this is to buy and discard cigarettes. You are going to need around $600-$900 depending whether you have honor discount or not. Head to any store that sells cigarettes and buy 2 packets then discard them, you can get all 144 if you wish, but you are only required to complete 1 of any of the 12 sets available. Once you have got a complete set head over to the post office and post the 12 cards over to Phineas T. Ramsbottom from the ‘Smoking and other Hobbies’ Stranger mission and you achievement should instantly pop.

What?

There are a few Stranger missions that trigger Collectable strands – see Western Stranger. It is advised not to go for the cigarette card one (there's nearly 150 cards). The quickest one is for finding 10 rock faces. Credit to PowerPyx for the video:

You can also farm all the cards quite quickly, although it is tedious. You need approximately $1000 (depending on whether there is a discount for reputation and how much) and approximately 30 minutes of time. Go to the store to the stand with cigarettes and buy a pack of expensive ones (2 packs at a time). When you buy each, you will get 1 card (repetitions are possible, but not often) and give +5 to your good eye. then you open the bag, throw out the cigarettes and start all over again.

If the last few cards still do not fall out of the purchased packs of cigarettes, then it will be easier and faster to use this card and find them yourself. Look in your inventory for the sets and numbers of cards that you are missing. There is a search line on the map, type in, for example, “fauna of north america - card #2” (with a dash and hash mark required) and the location of the card will be displayed.

The easiest option for me is to farm cigarette cards. You go to the store and buy expensive cigarettes, throw them away and buy them again, after you collect 12 cards from one collection, go to the post office and send the NPC by mail and the trophy is yours.

The hint is wrong. Yesterday I collected 12 cards and sent them by mail, but I never saw the trophy. It turns out that in order for the trophy to drop, you need to send all your card collections. So if you don’t have money, but you need a trophy, then the easiest way is to collect rock paintings.

To receive it, you need to go to the post office in two more days and pick up the reward for the quest.
