How to unlock the Grin and Bear it achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 - Definitive Guide

I used the 2 grizzly bears between wallace station and watsons cabin. Once killed, take the train to saint Denis. Save game. Quit to dashboard. Reload game. Take train back to wallace and the bears are back. Rinse and repeat. Worked everytime and took about 2hours to get all 18. Make sure you save and quit to dashboard in saint denis as that resets the spawn. It costs a bit of money to use the train but i was selling the pelts and meat in St Denis and this covered most of the travel costs

Near the stream south west of the station. A second grizzly can spawn there. He wasnt there every time but at least 1 in 3. The other bear always spawned without fail for me.

this worked perfectly, although I never could get the one near Watson's cabin to spawn, the one near Wallace station would always spawn if you go to the location in the morning between 6:00 and 8:00. Sometimes the bear would one hit kill me but after respawing and going back I was able to kill it.

I started this method with ten kills to go and a bear showed up 10/11 times. Two or three times a bear showed up right when I was about to head to the train so its possible I just didn't wait long enough the one time he didn't show. Never got two bears in one go, but at least I always got one.

I was working well until today, the bears appear but now when I kill him the percentage does not go up, I have it in 66% and it does not go up anymore, I do not understand why.

I'm using this method, but for some reason only one bear spawns on each trip. Sometimes one, sometimes the other. Oh well, still get the achievement at some point.

Using the pump shotgun as it seems to be a one-shot kill.

Can someone please clarify "quit to dashboard?" Do I just have to select "exit game" from the start menu? Or do I have "quit game" from the xbox menu? Thank you!

This isn't working for me. The bear only spawns once in around every five trips to Wallace Station for me. I'm travelling back to Saint Denis after every kill and quitting to dashboard. I seem to be having the same issue as someone else in the comments. The bear corpses are still there when I go back to Wallace Station and that seems to prevent them spawning.

If you're having the spawn issue/too many bear corpses laying around, die. This refreshed the world and all previous dead bears disappeared for me.

I randomly came across a grizzly in Dakota river, shot it, let it attack me then killed it whilst I was on my back. I reloaded my latest save came across the bear again and did the same thing. Tracker still says I’m on 5% from the one that is pretty much a given in the story, so the 2 kills haven’t counted?

Something glitchy about the achievement!

This is working perfectly! Here are my exact steps:

1. Go to Wallace Station.
2. Walk more or less in a straight line towards Watson's Cabin. Make sure you have a powerful weapon. I brought along my pump-action shotgun.
3. Let grizzly #1 attack you, enter the "battle scene" where you have to fight it off, stab it, then shoot it dead.
4. Continue walking towards Watson's Cabin.
5. Repeat step #3 but this time for grizzly #2.
6. Walk/ride back to Wallace Station.
7. Take train to to St. Denis.
8. Save the game.
9. Quit to dashboard.
10. Quit out of the game.
11. Start the game.
12. Repeat steps #1 to #11 until you get the achievement!

NOTE: If you don't see the grizzlies, you might have to walk around and stray from the "straight line" path to the cabin.

@Swyer87: Did you save/reload, or just reload from before you'd killed it? I'm playing on PS4, with no tracking, but I believe the counter is in the save, not on your profile, so reloading without saving first will reset the counter back to N-1.

This worked well enough for the first 14 or so bears, albeit only one per trip would spawn. Now its a grinding hault, with 1 bear every 4 trips or so. I'm not saying this solution is dead wrong, but we can't definitively say this IS guaranteed to work. There must be more variables to the equation we, collectively, don't understand.

The xbox achievements are all saved to our profiles now because the game saves were exploited in the past.

I think you have to be mauled by the bear then kill it with the shots you fire while on your back. I've had several now where I show it, but had to stand up and reload and those didn't count

Not sure if it is because I'm on the One X, but this did not work for me - at best I had one bear spawn and once I'd killed 2 or 3 they just stopped spawning.

What did work for me was the solution put up by whateverken referencing the PS4 trophies video. There is less time lost on travelling and I had 2 bears spawn on seven of the eight attempts.

You have to let the bear attack you, fight it and when it backs away, you fire. Just shooting the bear from distance does not count.

I got out of 33% but not all attacks work, you have to kill it during the animation or seconds after, use shotgun if you can, if he get a few strides away from you apparently it won’t count.

I would agree with the Saint Denis method. I would go to the saloon/inn and sleep 19 hours until morning, and the bears would always be there after riding the train back to Wallace. Yes it takes some time, but so does riding around and reloading saves hoping the bear would be there. The automatic spawn was enough to convince me, knowing I wasn’t wasting my time for something that might happen. In fact, many times I was able to get 2 to spawn in the same area. One would be in the lower valley part, near the wood pile and the remains of the cable. The second would be higher up, in the space between the bear and the cabin to the northwest. Make sure to have some health cures or moonshine handy in case you see two in rapid succession!

Solution is not working for me. The bear corpse still there after I return (did everything the guide says). To circumvent this, I need to sleep almost 40 hours of game time in Saint Danist to make the corpse disappears and new one respawn.

My advice would be to split this achievement up while doing the story, I was able to get 55% done before they stopped spawning frequently, now I intend to do more of the story and then come back to finish it after all the corpses disappear and what not.

What's a "bear attack?" You can't just kill them with a sniper rifle as they're eating honey? 🐻🍯😭 Edit: Never mind - I have just spotted the guide video, below👍. TIL, the camp acts as a respawn point! I was forever packing them up, due to the fire hazard! 😅

Fatest way to kill the bears and respawn it:

1. Kill the bear
2. Save
3. Reload the save
4. Sleep 16/18h
5. Sleep again 16/18h
6. Save
7. Reload the save
8. Sleep 16/18h
9. Sleep again 16/18h
10. Repeat step 1

Works 100% of times.

I did mine while also replaying missions for the 70 gold medals. I stuck north west of Wallace Station. After killing a bear, I would save, set up camp and sleep for the longest I could. Then I would load up one mission. Most of the time when I got back I found another bear hanging around. The last time I even got two.

You should add that you can take down a Grizzly with a single Poison Knife. When hit they go off and lie incapacitated so you can easily get the final blow in.

I for some reason can't get this to work at all. I'm not sure what's going on. The corpses of the bears I've already killed don't seem to go away and it seems that this is what's preventing the new bears from spawning - this is something I've noticed over my time with the game and hunting, I could never really farm an animal in one location because they wouldn't spawn if the body of the previous one was there.

A theory I have is that, because I have an X, the locations of the dead animals are more likely to stay and for longer because of the higher RAM available for the game to store this info on. However it doesn't really make sense because that should be cleared once you dashboard. I just don't know how I'm going to get this achievement reliably. I have 250 hours in the game and only 6 counts towards the achievement.

You need to let bear charge attack you and then fight it off you by pressing B. Then you have to kill the bear with a gun while you are still laying on your back. Killing the bear once you get back on your feet wont count towards this achievement.

I think we need some clarification if this is surviving 18 CONSECUTIVE bear attacks or 18 TOTAL. The problem I'm having is I was at 13 bear attacks with 77% progress on my achievement tracker, I killed one and then one immediately spawned right near by (lucky me) and I had low health so it killed me upon attack.
Since then my achievement tracker has not been going up which makes me think you have to do 18 in a row which is really dumb and grindy.
Anyway, does anyone know from experience if they died from an attack and still got it with the few they had left?

EDIT: For some reason my tracker stopped tracking, I killed another bear and it then caught up to 94% (I had killed probably 4 or 5 before the tracker caught back up). I think the tracker bugs and I don't think the kills have to be consecutive or that you have to stay alive on all of them consecutively.

Do the save quit to dashboard method and sleep method for this and for all animal spawns as a matter of fact when you are hunting/studying for those achievements. This achievement is unlocking 100%.

Actually this seldom works without specific methods.
You'll only register the retaliation kill 100% of the time if it's a one shot kill:

1. Use whateverken's guide for the campsite location and make camp on the ridge, then put down a red marker📍 on the bear's nearby location, NNE.
2. Make 18 explosive rounds for the Springfield rifle and load them, and have this rifle in the left/shoulder slot.
3. Sleep 17/18hrs x2.
4. Save and reload game.
5. Sleep 17/18hrs x2.
6. Save and reload game.
7. Get on your horse and dismount near the brown bear at the bottom of the valley, NNE from campsite.
8. Turn your back on the bear, and bash B to stab it during the attack.
9. As soon as you've stabbed poor Ursus🐻 twice, start rapidly pressing RT to shoot the bear ASAP, without aiming, from the ground (this early shot with an explosive round guarantees the necessary 1 shot kill, and has the added bonus of leaving the bear on all fours - which gives no skinning animation).
10. Whistle your horse; Pick up your hat; Skin the bear (waste not, want not), which isn't animated; (Do not search for the rarely seen second bear, but kill it the same way if it appears - you weirdly don't need more health) Ride SSW back up to the campsite and dismount.
11. Sleep 17/18hrs x2. Repeat steps 4-11.

This truly will register a kill 100% of the time on the achievement-tracker (I like mine displayed middle-left) toast. You'll have to deal with the slaughter-guilt yourself 🐻❤️😭.

Just got this last night. Used the following youtube as a guide.

Thanks to PS4Trophies for the video.

Setup camp near the area the video suggests.
Wonder around till you find a bear and kill it.
sleep 16 hours
sleep 18 hours
save / load
sleep 16 hours
sleep 18 hours

I was able to consistently find a bear doing this. And they only appear during the day from what I've seen. Or during the evening before it goes ark.

I recommend you do everything in this video but instead use Bear Claw camp in Tall Trees as there is a dedicated grizzly spawn in the camp from a mission. The bear ALWAYS appears.

Set camp a little outside on top of the hill, ride around the back and it is ALWAYS in the bottom left corner of the camp.

I just simply don't understand how this guide is not on the top. Just did it, and everything went as smooth as possible. I got 2 bears like 7 times from 10 run. It was fast and easy, and this guide deserves to be on top. If any of you try this method, make sure, you go the exact same way as the video uploader goes, because the 2nd bear is always on that path.

By far the best solution out there.

Extra info I discovered. There are TWO bear spawns everytime, however, it takes a full 72 hours of sleeping AND you have to wake up in the morning. So you may need to do another reset of sleep to ensure you wake up in the morning. Therefore, if you are killing one and not reseting the full 72, then you may only be killing one at a time while the other resets. If you DO NOT SKIN the bear, the paw print indicating the carrcas will stay on the map UNTIL it respawns. THIS DOES not mean you will find the bear if it spawned far away, but it lets you know if it has because if the bear carcas is still on the map then you haven't waited long enough.

IF the bear does kill you, RELOAD the last save and do it again, as the bears will reset. I had my camp saved within walking distance of BOTH bears which made this easier and dying seemed to upset the spawns.

It is best if you mark the locations where you encountered the bear. For me (as i reloaded if i died) the bears generally kept respawning close to those locations.

Bears would spawn in one of two ways. 1. the would suddenly appear near you, alerted if you approached quickly. 2. They would be generated by you galloping through an area. Often i circled through an area only to return and there was a bear.

Lastly, if you circle your well known area and don't find one, sometimes it is better to sleep and reset the area then to journey around, even if you keep hearing growling in the far distance.

When fighting the bear, stay back as a single paw hit can kill you and let it charge you from a distance. Then mash B until it gives you a chance to shoot.

I tried a strategy to force the bears to respawn in the photo area. Traveling from Wallace Station
External image
to Emerald Ranch

and returning. Then head to the map area and look for the bear, if it still does not appear i advise sleeping 2 to 5 nights using the maximum hours. If everything works out just by repeating the process, it will take some time but the achievement will come.

UPDATE: If you're having difficulty increasing your percentage try this. Use Springfield rifle in one of the empty slots, the other is empty. When you are attacked by him keep pressing B without stopping, after the animation he stabs the bear he is in a kind of slow motion, at that moment you press RT to shoot. a single shot of the gun is enough, just like the video. Before that I also had trouble tracking. My friend RodrigoBahls was one of the first to win the achievement, he used this method and then i did too.

I'm tired of working so hard on this achievement and now I'm going to sleep. I will update with images and videos later. Sorry for bad English.

I improved the strategy a little bit, you don't need to go all the way to Emerald Ranch. Kill a Grizzly and ride south over the river following the railroad tracks a little bit and make a camp. Save the game, reload. sleep twice to midnight and noon and travel back to the Grizzly location. Worked everytime. You see when you camp is in the right location if it is next to the railroad tracks. Sometimes it moved towards the river, which is too close to get the grizzlys to spawn.

Nice Guide thx a lot smile

Here is my way, i hope it will work for everyone

Kill the bear near Wallace Station ( area on the pic).
Go to Wallace Overlook, make a camp, sleep 18-36 hours ( if its possible, sometimes u only can sleep 18 hours max)
Go back to the bear area, and kill him again ( repeat this 18 times)
I tried it 6 times now, and it worked every time.

Does it supposed to track the progress because every time the bear attacks me I am not able to kill it while my character is on the ground. Killed it twice and my tracking is still at 0% unlike all other achievements. If it supposes to track which weapon do you recommend. dance

I used a rolling block rifle since that's a 1 shot. Also to guarantee a spawn (because sometimes using these strategies they didn't appear), take the train to Saints Denis, rent a room and sleep until you can't anymore. Then return to Wallace station via train. It takes a little longer on paper, but it ends up being about the same as like I said sometimes the bears don't appear with this solution.

I must have killed a bear and then not saved my game because it got to 22% after I killed 2 bears. If anyone else's counter is stuck, just keep killing them and saving until the bears you have killed on your game save have caught up with your achievement progress.

You'll have to survive 18 bear attacks. It seems only Grizzlys will attack you. American black bears run away.
When you find one, select your repeating rifle (fast reload and good amount of dmg), but don't shoot it yet.
Let the bear mangle you down and spam the B button. You will break free eventually and have the chance to shoot at the bear. Quickly press RT (three to) four times. That should kill the bear while you're still on your back on the ground and give you progress towards the achievement.
If you upgrade your weapon and/or use better bullets, you'll kill the bear faster. You save some ammo and you have a better chance to make it count.

Grizzly bears can be found in the region Grizzlies East in Ambarino. There are muliple spawns north east of the legendary bear (north and south of the railroad tracks). For exact locations, see the picture down below. You can sell the hide to the trapper and return later or save the game and reload or camp. Leaving the area (e.g. visiting the trapper, works best).
I used the one near Elysian Pool. This has the chance to be far enough to reset at least one spawn. While reaching the spawn south of the railroad, the bear was not there most of the time. However, it should be enough to cross the tracks and then turn around. This can force a bear-spawn, but that is not 100% guaranteed.

Location and best way to scout both locations

Maka made a great video explaining the achivement and a different approach. Try it, it might work better for you too!

Just got this in like one hour - I know there’s good in depth guides/solutions already out there but here’s one I used that doesn’t require a camp, a train or anything of the sort. Between Wallace station and the bear icon on the map is the location you’ll be using. Once you’ve found the bear, killed it head to the general store at Wallace station and do this -
SAVE game in a NEW SLOT
DELETE old save
RELOAD the new save

Usually heard the bear growling somewhere as soon as I loaded back in - if not have a quick scan around anything over 5 mins go back rinse repeat

This is how I did it, got all 18 in about 2 hours

Equip carbine with express bullets (do not have any other weapon equipped)

Find bear by Wallace station (in and around the area shown in other solutions. Credit to them great spot). Not always in the same spot so ride around the area.

Mash b when on ground, kill bear whilst lying on ground when he lets you go

I had two bears spawn four times whilst farming them, so get ready to take health tonic if needed in case you get another spawn

Skin bear and drop bear skin on ground

Go over by the nearby river, sleep until night...

Save game

Load game (no need to dashboard just load save just made)

Sleep until morning (sometimes it’s morning already so no need to sleep)

Find bear again in above location

Rinse and repeat

I found a bear nearly every time using this method... only time didn’t spawn was when raining

Good luck

Just adding on to the other solutions. A great way to accomplish this without feeling like your grinding too much (this takes the fun out of it) is to do as follows.

First you need to save right next to a bear location by setting up camp and then making a manual save. Every time you logon to play, either online or offline, tell yourself you only need to grind 1-2 times before doing what you actually got on to play. While this takes a lot more time to get the achievement, it feels WAY less grindy and still is a bit fun every time you do it. Using the methods above and this way of thinking i naturally unlocked the acheivment in about a week without feeling like I grinded at all.

TIP: If you have the pump shotgun use it as it is a guaranteed kill without having to aim. Also, make sure you're facing the bear when it attacks you and you're not standing too still or the bear will just swipe you and insta-kill you without triggering the fight.

Also a quick way to get the bears attention is to fire a couple rounds in the air, if it doesn't attack you it didn't spawn. (make sure to switch back to your shotgun)

Hey guys I followed the guides above but just putting my input in for those who are having a hard time with the achievement tracker updating. I found out when I was just killing a bear or multiple in one spot near Wallace station and the area next to the legendary Grizz. Then id just reload my last save in an attempt to spawn new bears.... Well come to find out why my tracker would not update If I recalled I had got my tracker to 11/18 but when I reloaded the game in the stats for the Grizzly Bears I only killed 8!! so I had to kill until I got back past 11 then it started to count towards the achievement... Hope that helps I also found a new spot that I don't believe has been listed on this guide its below I don't take credit for finding it but its the easiest one the bear is just sitting looking over the cliff..

The other guides are great for this but they are kind of a long grind that I found inconsistent at times. If your in the endgame and going for GOLD RUSH and playing missions on replay, put yourself at Wallace Station. Put a marker on the bear spawn on the map north of Wallace. This way in between missions, it will spawn you around Wallace station, you can check for bare spawns. No having to sleep/save/reload. If anything you may have to sleep to make it daytime again. I found 18 bears this way before getting 70 golds.

To unlock the Grin and Bear it trophy in Red Dead Redemption 2, you need to survive a direct assault from a bear and then kill it, 18 times over. If you come across a bear and it gets a hold of you, it will pin you to the ground. You can mash cn_O to get out of it, and then you will have a small window to shoot the bear repeatedly before a second lethal attack. Hit the weak points and you should be fine (It's easier to do this in the late game once you have the weak points available in Dead Eye).

You can attempt to rack up 18 attacks randomly; you'll find bears in Tall Trees as well as across the Grizzlies and around Wallace Station. You can also save scum -- according to some, you can survive one bear attack, leave the area, save on a new slot, delete the old save and reload the latest save to get a respawn. I wasn't able to replicate this perfectly every time but it certainly worked a few times.

ImmortanProstate adds: "... the kill will only count if you shoot the bear while on your back post stabbing the bear in the neck and hitting the shoot cue. In order to make sure you don't miss this, spam R2 immediately after the stabbing sequence and you will get a head shot and the kill. If you miss the cue then you will end up shooting it multiple times in the torso till it dies or the character stands up and the bear or you die and that is how you know if you didn't get the registered kill for this trophy. Had to shoot four more bears than necessary to pop this trophy."

This must be specifically grizzly bears. Black bears will not count. A straightforward trophy but can be a little grindy and frustrating to get bears to spawn consistently if you try and farm it in one go so I would recommend that you do this every so often during your playthrough, perhaps at the beginning and/or end of each gaming session.

Before you start make sure you equip a powerful weapon. Either a shotgun or repeater and with express bullets for maximum damage.

The most consistent spawn point is halfway between Wallace Station and Watson's Cabin (click here for a map, courtesy of PowerPyx: LINK). Ride near to this location but get on foot before you get too close. Run around the area and with any luck, a grizzly will spawn. Let the grizzly charge at you and knock you to the ground. As soon as it does, quickly spam the button to fight off the bear. When it climbs off you will be given the chance to shoot it with your equipped weapon. Quickly do so until it dies and you will be one step closer to the 18 required for this trophy.

You must kill the bear in this fashion, where it knocks you to the ground and the button prompt shows for you to fight it off and then shoot it whilst you’re still lying on the ground. Killing a bear in any other way will not count towards this trophy.

If you want to farm these kills, ride away for about a minute after a kill and set up camp. Sleep for a day or two and when you re-load, hopefully another bear will spawn when you ride back. If not, you may want to carry on doing something else and come back later.

To get it you need to let the bear grab you, there will be a moment when you can escape by pressing after that you will fall to the ground and there will be a short period of time to shoot, and so on 18 times.
The only way: they allowed him to be captured, broke out, and shot him.
You can try farming in a place where there are bears, setting up a camp and waiting for them to attack you at night.

Not to be confused with black bears. We need a Big Bear, like a Grizzly.

The main thing is not to get up from the ground when the bear knocks you down and retreats. If you get to your feet and kill him, it won’t count anymore.

I recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzoY6yFPNn0 it shows a farming method that will take 2-3 hours depending on the spawn of bears.

There is no need to sleep, as advised above. Just save after you kill the grizzly, then immediately load from this save and look for it in these places again, after 3-5 minutes you couldn’t find it - load again.

1) We go to a place where Grizzly bears spam;
2) Take a sniper rifle, load an explosive cartridge into it;
3) We wait for the bear to jump and knock you down (we don’t shoot);
4) Press constantly ;
5) After Arthur sticks a knife into his neck 2 times, he will take out a sniper rifle with an explosive cartridge and just press the shot (without even aiming);
6) That's it, the bear is ready;
7) We get up “from our knees”, eat a piece of “big game” meat and skin the bear;
8) We get “big game” and “fat”;
9) We set up camp, fry meat and make an “explosive cartridge” for a rifle (express cartridge + fat);
10) We sleep to the maximum (30-36 hours);
11) Save and load immediately;
12) Repeat until the bitter end.

Explanations:

1) Explosive cartridges are best suited for killing such large animals;
2) Take a sniper rifle - for maximum damage;
3) “Refresh” the bear so that it is possible to make a new explosive cartridge;
4) We sleep for 30-36 hours, so that there is a greater likelihood of a new bear appearing; if you don’t find it within 1-2 minutes, we load up and sleep for another 30-36 hours. It usually takes 2-3 days for the old body to disappear and the new bear to spam;
5) With each download and save you can go to bed 2 times.

By the way, in terms of weapons, it is not necessary to bother with an explosive cartridge for a rifle as described above; one shot from a double-barreled shotgun with a standard cartridge is enough to finish off a clubfoot.

No need to sleep, just boot. It is better to save at night before performing this. At night, up to 2 bears can come out, one after another. Made in West Elizabeth, near Wales station.

While the mission was going on, I stopped by from time to time to see the Grizzly at Wallace Stashain. There was already an achievement in Chapter 4.

Go fight the bear when your health level is at least 6. Otherwise, he just kills you with one hit, before you fight.

Sometimes there is a situation when a clubfoot, taken aback by the audacity of shooting in his face, forgets to die on time. It also happened that after two bursts from a shotgun, he would stand, growl, and when the character had already gotten up and dusted himself off, he would fall on his side. Such cases are also counted, I checked by looking at the Rockstar Club statistics, I had it 5 times, after getting up I didn’t shoot, the bear is considered killed while lying down.

The color of the bear's skin does not affect the trophy. The main thing is that he pounces on you, and you break free and shoot him while lying down. The easiest way to farm a bear is this:
1. Set up camp in a place like in the photo.
2. Sleep 4 times for 18 hours (you can sleep 2 times every 5 minutes, but this counter can be reset by saving the game and loading the save)
3. Look for the bear in the area of the red marks. As a rule, he spawns in one of them (sometimes in both at once, but this is rare. Also sometimes he does not spawn at all, but this is even more rare).
4. Let the bear attack you and break free by spamming the “Circle” button.
5. When you run out of bears, return to camp and repeat the process from step 2

PS bears killed during story missions (there seemed to be two of them) do not count towards the trophy.
