How to unlock the Give to the Poor achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 - Definitive Guide

This achievement can be done literally in a single deposit about an hour after the start of Chapter 2.

You’ll first need to get to the point where you can free roam anywhere you want around RDR2’s map. Afterward, you’ll want to complete 2 very specific treasure hunts that will earn you $3500 before even touching a story mission. By using $1500 you’ll also be able to completely upgrade your camp to the max and unlock powerful tens and even Fast Travel which is a must for this game.

To upgrade your camp and deposit the money, simply walk up to the box outside of Dutch's tent.

Do you have to do the entire quest or can you skip to end and just collect gold?

From what people in the comments on the videos told me, you need to do the whole thing.

Just to add to this.

Dont do the achievement before you get the Missions to start chasing people who owe you money as before that the money the camp earns means nothing and your betting off keeping the money yourself.

Once you complete the first 3 missions for money you get the option to upgrade the camp through the ledger. Unless youve really splashed the cash you should have more than enough money to give the camp $250 and unlock the fast travel at the same time. I had enough to give the Camp $400 at this point.

Thanks for this guide. Donated all the gold from one treasure and that’s enough to fully update the camp.

I just got to the first real camp after ch. 2. At what point after did you do this trek? I have. 3 yellow dots of "missions" I think I can go to. Are you saying to do this before any of that?

@zDrUnKeNMoNkEyz It is a mission for Herr Strauss. He sets you up to collect debts that people owe him.

How do you get that Strauss mission where he’s sat on the rock? Is there something you need to do first?

Now what happens if you beat the game without doing this achievement? would you have to start up a whole new game again?

Perfect guide. I got all the way to the waterfall and didn’t have a lantern, so that’s the only thing I would add before watching.

Somehow I managed to do it in the dark. Then killed myself with dynamite...

I’ve done everything and I’m back in the room with the statues. It’s not giving me an option to press and buttons. Any suggestions? No matter how I face them there’s no option.

@graham Austin - push on the back side of statue to reset them. Just figured this out myself. Thought I ruined it. Good luck

Also that statue video is about two minutes too long.
Just arrive, and push the four statue buttons needed, and it’ll still open without traveling elsewhere.

Figured it out, go to the town of Valentine & do the Javier mission highlighted in yellow. Then the Strauss missions should unlock back at camp, with a yellow LS marker on the map

To quickly knock this achievement out early on in the game, as soon as you are able to donate to the camp and free roam around in Chapter 2, head to the burned down town of Limbamy. It's a VERY short ride from camp, marked red here on the map:

External image

Once you arrive in the town head to the burned down Sheriff building and look behind the desk on the left as soon as you enter. There should be a lock box that contains a Gold Bar and Special Horse Stimulant Pamphlet that teaches you a crafting recipe. Take the gold bar back to camp and donate it for $500 in camp funds and this achievement.

Here's a screenshot of the lockbox location inside the Sheriff's office if you're having trouble:

The gold bar method has been patched so the easiest way to earn money is to follow the glitch in this video. (Thanks to Reborn Insanity for letting me know).

Once you have $250, head to your camp and donate to the box next to Dutch's tent, which is unlocked as you progress through the main missions in Chapter 2.

When you have loads of money, head to Saint Denis' tailor. You should be able to fast travel here if you have previously been here.

Make a new save before you enter. When you enter, you should get pickpocketed. Chase the thief, hogtie him and then loot him. If he took more than $250, you will get that money plus a bit extra. He took $490 from me and I gained $610. The reason for saving is that you don't always get the money back. I tested it on three different save files so I believe this event happens for everyone. Please let me know if that is not the case.

You can then spend $5000 for:

It works on any gold bar according to the video and it’s been confirmed in the comments on YT. Give it a try.

I know, it's just for simplicity since that one is so close to camp.

This has been patched. New method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK5UmIT0UHg you probably have to be a bit further in the campaign to unlock the horse fence though.

According to this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DJhYZJOJ3wA&t=29s

I haven’t done that mission and headed to other fences after speaking to Sarah(?) once completing Strauss’ bounty missons.

To unlock the Give to the Poor trophy in Red Dead Redemption 2, you need to approach the $ symbol in any camp and select Contribute and donat $250 over time, OR select the ledger and buy camp upgrades to the tune of $250 over time -- this also counts as donation.

Don't worry too much about doing this in Chapter 2, as you won't be earning huge amounts of money. You'll get plenty in Chapters 3 and 4, but make sure to finish this before you finish Chapter 4 as it won't be available after that. For reference, the end of Chapter 4 is triggered by

Missable

At every camp, you will see an icon of a box with a dollar sign on it. This is the gang's tithing box. There are three ways you can donate to it: put money in it, donate valuables (pocket watches, belt buckles etc.) or donate things to Pearson for funds (which will go directly to the camp funds).

While the trophy is missable (it must be done before Chapter 5), it's fairly easy, as you will have to do many robberies via story missions, which will all yield several hundred dollars apiece so it's easy to just take $250 of that and put it in the tithing box. You can even back up your save and reload after donating the money if you don't want to part with it.

If you are afraid of missing a trophy in the future, then you can throw away all the cash, get the trophy and load up.

You don't have to spend cash! Rings, watches, etc. also count. items

I advise you to invest as much money as possible in the initial stages and develop the camp. So after purchasing a tent for Dutch, an improvement to Arthur’s tent will open, where it will be available (fast travel) for $430, and I also advise you to buy a furrier’s kit for $190, this will give you the opportunity to craft bags and other things in the camp from the skins of killed animals.

I advise you not to put your money in the donation box, but to buy improvements for the camp - ammo, food and medicine. Money invested in these upgrades also counts towards the trophy.

For those who dropped $250 and didn’t get the trophy, don’t worry, it will be unlocked when you drop $400.

If at first you have problems with money and it’s a pity to give it up - save up $250 at a time - I did it easily already in the second chapter, save, reset the money and boot. Both the trophy and the money are in place. And as a spendthrift, you can already contribute a little bit to the common fund for the sake of honor.

I would like to add. At the beginning of the game you will meet strangers and receive 2 treasure maps. Find them! There are a lot of tips on the Internet. On this you will cut about 3.5k dollars. I pumped up the entire camp to the maximum at once. And plus I got a trophy.
