How to unlock the It's Art achievement in Red Dead Redemption 2 - Definitive Guide

Welcome to what will be your most time-consuming achievement to get in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Before going any further, I highly suggest completing the games second epilogue prior to starting this as you will need to unlock Beaches Hope (John Marston's Farm) to get this achievement. However, if you wish to start this immediately then you can during chapter 2. Speaking of this achievement, it is actually split into two separate parts and is one of the longer 20+ hour ones to complete.

The first part of this achievement requires that you collect 19 3 Star quality pelts from specific animals that have been requested. To start this, head to any of the major train stations around the map and you'll find the poster on the wall (It's by the door inside at the Valentine station).Once you've completed a hunt, return to the Post Office and send off your items then wait till the next day to resume your hunting by visiting the Post Office for the next step.

You will need to hunt the following Animals:
Squirrels - Best found around Emerald Ranch & Dewberry Creek.
Rabbits - Around Emerald Ranch area.
Rats - Civil war battlefield, east of Braithwaith Manor.
Cardinal - Dakota River or Roanoke Valley.
Woodpecker - North of Annesburg or Braithwaith Manor.
Chipmunks - Between Braithwaith Manor and Caliga Hall.
Opossum - South of Rigs Station.
Orioles - Roanoke Valley or Monto's Rest.
Robins - Roanoke Valley.
Songbirds - Roanoke Valley or Monto's Rest.
Sparrows - Roanoke Valley.
Toads - Roanoke Valley.
Skunks - North of Upper Montana River.
Bullfrogs - East of Bluewater Marsh.
Bats - Behind the Elysian Pools Waterfall.
Blue Jays - Roanoke Valley.
Crows - Emerald Ranch.
Wax Wings - Cumberland Falls.
Beavers - Below the R for New Hanover.

After you have completed all the hunting requests, you must wait 24 hours for an Invitation from Mrs. Hobbs.

Important Notes
- Don't skin or pluck any animals.
- Don't go after animals that require you put them on your horse until last as they will spoil.
- Get the Buck Antler Trinket from killing the Legendary Buck so 2 Stars can have a chance to come as 3 stars when picked up.
- Get the Pronghorn Trinket from the killing the Legendary Pronghorn so animals don't spoil on your horse when you pick them up.
- If an animal doesn't spawn in your area as a 3 star or just in general, you can Save - Quit Game - Continue to respawn the area.

Visit Mrs. Hobbs and you will be treated to a cutscene and get a reward which is a Gunslinging Squirrel. Now take it back to Beaches Hope and place it atop the Fireplace in the living room. Abigail isn't a fan. Now leave the ranch and set up your campfire and wait a day or so then return to the ranch. You'll need to do this multiple times so I recommend after each step sleeping some more and if you can't sleep, use either the blackwater coach and travel to Annesburg or quit the game and load back in.

The following locations are where the Squirrel can be found:
- John's Room inside a chest.
- John's Room inside a Fireplace.
- Uncles Room inside a chest in the attic which can be accessed by using the ladder in the kitchen.
- Outside in a wheelbarrow in the sheep pen.
- Outside in the barn in a chest on the upper level.
- Waaaaaay north on the top of Mount Shann.

You will unlock the Achievement after picking it up again for the final time. Here is a video guide:

So Ms. Hobbs goes on vacation until you finish the game right? i wanted to do all of the challenges but I just realized you probably need the epilogue for the last hunting request? If this is the case, you should tell people not to bother collecting for the last part as I'm pretty sure you lose your inventory going into the post-game...

Is there some kind of progress tracker for this? I've beaten the game, went to Valentine train station and no poster.... very confused as to what to do.

So I got lucky a bit, I had a few of the animal carcasses in my satchel when several of them started which helped but I'd recommend the ones that cant be stored, do last as they decay quickly!

North of the word "Annesburg" is a section of river with two crossings. A robin will spawn on the rocks here aswell as a bluejay, I also got an Oriole here but it's pretty rare. Just keep running circles around this section and the birds will respawn. Hope that helps.

If the posters aren't showing up, try completing the first part of the Stranger Mission 'The Ties that Bind us' which is just North of Rhodes, mine showed up after that.

lol ok, I’ve calmed down since the Oriole “drowning incident” haha and have made my way down the list to Toads. I think the stress ought to be over as the rest of the animals are pretty common or have specific spawns.

PRO TIP: If you're in a location where there are also a ton of other animals you need, GO FOR THEM TOO. I was Hunting the Robin for like 2-3 hours last night, but while doing so I was killing the other birds and toads in that area for perfect pelts, not sure if they'd carry over or not. Well I finally got the robin and finished that portion of the mission, get the 3rd part, only need 2 of 5, and for the last part I will also only need 2. This heavily reduces the amount of time needed to get this. This "20+ Hour Achievement" has taken me about 5 hours thanks to that.

Another tip, the Beaver took me forever because EVERY online resource I found, and even THE OFFICIAL GUIDE is wrong about how to get a perfect pelt. The .22 Varmint rifle is the only way to do so. I killed maybe 10 perfect beavers and always got 2 star. I was like "What? I'm using the weapons the guide says to what am I doing wrong?". Tried the .22 and boom, perfect pelt right away.

Cautionary note for those working on this prior to Epilogue 1. You can pre-collect the small animals that fit in your satchel for future Requests, except for Request 5, which includes the Cedar Waxwing, Blue Jay, Bat, and Crow.

There's no point in collecting these since

I can easily say that the easiest and most reliable spot for robins is 1/3 of the way north on the road that goes by Firwood Rise in Cumberland Forest. It spawns every morning on the western side of the road at about an hour after sunrise if you camp out there. I got all 4 I needed in less than half an hour by saving after collecting each one and then loading the save and sleeping until morning.
One a side note: can anyone confirm how to trigger the fifth hunting request?

Without a doubt, the best area is Roanoke Valley, there is a place where about 4 rocks are saved, where the symbol of the birding left the valley, use binoculars and if it does not go out, take a long walk and return

For those of you thinking you need to find the lists at the post office, you do not. Just tap left on the d-pad (don't hold it) and you'll see a list of tasks come up. Go to 'Art Exhibition' and press RB and the list for your next animals will be there. Do this for each subsequent list. No need to find any posters except the initial one in Valentine. If you can't find that one it means you already did earlier in the game and forgot about it, so just follow the instructions above and your list will be there.

What weapon are you using? Use the bow with small game arrows. If you've unlocked New Austin, there's a old cabin, just past Thieve's Landing and on the south coast, which has 5+ rats when you open the door. You can ride away and back and they usually re-spawn.

Good call on the rats. On the south coast directly south of Thieves Landing there were plenty of rats in the cabin "The Old Bacchus Place". They didn't have a star rating when I aimed at them, but I killed one with a small game arrow and picked it up: voila, a perfect carcass.

A quick note on place for guaranteed rats (minor spoilers apply).
In St Denis you can come across a random encounter with the owner of the saloon where you first meet the artist in a marked stranger mission. He will ask you to clear his saloon of rats in a fun throwback to every first quest in every RPG ever. Even though you cannot focus on these rats to study them, if you kill them with small game arrows, then when you pick them up they are perfect.
Obviously if you have already had this encounter then you will be out of luck...

Yea, but that's just a handful of animals you have to hunt. That will take 30min. (At least that's how long it took the first time)

Update: took another 60min to find the last set of 5 animals.

Mine must be bugged. I've completed stage 5 and mailed all animals, but my invite won't come in the mail. It says check back at the post office for my reward. It's been a week. As for the ROBIN it's probably the most elusive creature in the game. There is an island by the Rodes camp that always spawns one in the same small tree. Just ride in a circle until it shows. Be quick though. It's gone in a split second, but keeps respawning after a few laps. Here's the video that helped me. https://youtu.be/VrNnByoFSP4

Didn’t take me 20+ hours to do. Took me around 6-7 with the woodpecker taking the longest to find.
Found the robin in annesburg by the lake as mentioned around 11:30am.
I also already had the perfect blue jay and chipmunk collected before the requirement needed for them and didn’t glitch out.
When I handed them in I never slept at a camp but did fast travel a few times while hunting legendary fish.
Having the legendary pronghorn and Buck trinkets are a definite must as I was getting 2 star woodpeckers and bats put getting perfect conditions for them with the trinket perks.
I also used the TA solution on the ‘Zoology’ achievement to find most of the perfect animals needed.
As for the gunslinging squirrel I just slept outside of beaches hope for 6 hours each time, saving and quitting to the title screen when it wouldn’t let me sleep any longer.
Not as long as it was made out to be but for anyone having trouble with robins I would recommend the lake around Annesburg in the morning.

Does anyone know if the infamous glitch has been fixed yet? I mailed all pelts for challenge 4 instantly as I already had them all. So far so good. Already had 3 of 5 for the final challenge so hoping it doesn’t glitch on me. Iv created a ton of staggered saves just in case. This along with exotics was a real pain although not quite as bad as I was expecting. Maybe 10-12 hours total.

For anyone struggling with this or the exotics I recommend GTA series videos channel on YouTube. Very helpful and no annoying commentary, advertising etc just straight to the point and very clear., with his videos along with a couple others is how I managed to box all of the exotics and hunting off so quick.

It’s a long road to 100%

While Hunting for the Robin (which I found flying outside of Fort Barnard) I literally found every other small creature (Either on the Dakota river by the Bridge or Roanoke River. It took me four hours of searching to find the Robin. FIND ALL BIRDS AHEAD OF THE GAME OTHERWISE THEY DO NOT SPAWN.

There is a spot on the shore of the river by Roanoke valley in the top right hand corner of the map that you can find Blue Jays, Songbirds, Robins, Crows, Toads, Sparrows, Orioles, Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Squirrels and Rabbits all on one spot without even moving. It's just to the left of the dreamcatcher map icon (after you've collected it), left of Deen Cottage. Just north of the road on the map that crosses over the river, stand on the shore and look around with binoculars. Look on the top of all the rocks in the area and you'll see all the birds, they are incredibly common here and if the bird you want isn't there, just shoot up to scare the current ones away and wait a few mins for more to come. Do this at morning and after time has passed too much, sleep and then start again.

Finally finished this achievement, and was able to find some of the animals by using the video guide provided. I had trouble with a couple of them though, so here are a couple tips based on my own experience that I hope will help someone else:

1) When hunting for birds, try looking for them at Fort Brennand (which is slightly South West of Van Horn). After trying for hours at locations from the video, I ended finding several of them fairly quickly at this Fort thanks to a comment on Reddit.

https://www.reddit.com/r/reddeadredemption/comments/9sex8p/h...

2) I had no luck finding the Bat in the cave at Elysian Pool, even after saving and reloading a couple times.

Personally, I think a better location is at Moonstone Pond. It's a small body of water under Grizzlies East logo on the map. You should see a small house that was crushed by a tree, and once you get close enough, then several bats will fly out. If you are unable to shoot a perfect one, then try climbing up the downed tree and dropping down into house and seeing if a perfect bat is already there dead on the ground.

Once you receive the trophy after meeting with Ms. Hobbs place the trophy at the fireplace at Beechers Hope. Leave ranch, wait 24 hrs, return and the squirrel trophy is gone! Find the trophy 5 times and place it back on the fireplace. The 6th time you don't have to place it back once you find it.
Location 1: in John's room, chest by the door.
Location 2: John's room again, interact with fireplace.
Location 3: Go to room across from John's room and there's a ladder to the attic, chest in the attic.
Location 4: outside of barn by the sheep.
Location 5: Inside barn, climb ladder, chest at the top.
Location 6: Top of Mount Shann

Here's a great guide on where to find the requests and how to hunt them. Credit to powerpyx.
http://www.powerpyx.com/red-dead-redemption-2-all-hunting-re...
It also has the locations to place the trophy except the last unknown locations.

Note: alot of the birds spawn in big valley(cedar waxwing, woodpecker, cardinal,Oriole, robin, sparrow, songbird)west elizabeth part of the map.
I just stood on my horse with binocalurs. I did receive the requests even though I had most of the birds already in my inventory and they counted, after turning in the previous requests.
It's best to manual save after turning in the request if you do have subsequent requests in your inventory, just to be safe if it does bug and you don't get another request the following day.
Also, it's best to start this question after you have completed the epilogue, it's a massive time consumer hunting these damn animals and finding them in pristine condition.

hunting request 5 only becomes available during epilogue 1. i'm in chapter 2 and did not receive it after turning in the fourth one, i also had some of the next request carcasses in the satchel at the time so not sure if it glitched on me.

It's no glitch. When you received your reward for hunting request #4 there is a letter from ms. hobbs to say that she's gone on vacation.
Also when you read your log.
So this continues later.

I just think it's best to leave this for after you finish the epilogue as you'll spend so much time hunting the animals needed. I spent nearly 5 hours looking for a pristine possum goddamit. So I started hunting the animals, specifically birds that you can store in your satchel, needed for subsequent requests.

Might want to add that the buck trinket (I think that's the one) can turn 2 star carcasses into 3 star. although not all the time. This is very useful for hunting the birds in particular, as I think it only works on the animals that go directly into your inventory.

I think it should also be mentioned that Abigail might have to be awake for the initial prompt to place the squirrel to appear. I went home to place it at 6:00 AM, and the prompt wasn't there. I went back to the room to sleep and saw Abigail was asleep. The sleep prompt in Beecher's Hope never really worked for me, so I ran outside and around 6:28 I noticed the prompt appear, I ran back and Abigail was outside the house standing on the porch.

Simply complete all the hunting requests (you can start this series by picking up the paper inside Mail Offices (i got mine from saint denis but there are i think 5 other locations you can get it aswell))

after completing all the goals you'll get an invitation to the old lady and this is where you get the squirrel statue, afterwards head to your ,,Home,, (Ranch) and put the Statue ontop of the chimney, Abigail won't like it though and hide it multiple times whereas you have to find it all the times and put it back, after finding it the sixth time (ontop of a mountain lol) you will be awarded with the trophy.

I used this handy guide that will give you good tips and locations for the hunting part and also shows the places where abigail hides the squirrel:

While you can work on the bulk of this trophy during the game's story mode, you cannot earn it until after completing the game's Epilogue (you need access to the entire map).

Whenever you're in a train station, keep an eye out on the notice board – you will eventually find a flier looking for hunters (I got it late in Chapter 3 at the Rhodes post office; I don't know if it was available earlier or elsewhere). The flier will request specific perfect animal carcasses, so make sure you have a Varmint rifle and lots of small game arrows. Once you've fulfilled the request, go to any post office and mail the carcasses off, then come back in another day or two to receive a reward and another request.

With regards to the smaller carcasses (small mammals, birds etc.) it's worth remembering that once you have them in your satchel, they will not decay, unlike when you hang carcasses on your horse so for anything listed with an asterisk, if you happen to come across the animal while playing, take it out and store it until you are finally able to mail it out. Also, the star ranking on birds doesn't seem to matter - as long as you kill them the way the game tells you to (generally with small animal arrows), you will always get a perfect carcass.

There's a great place where you can get nearly all of the birds required for this trophy. From Annesburg (the text), go up and right and you’ll see the river hooking up and right. This bend of the river has several boulders in it, and every required species of bird (except Cedar Waxwing) will land on the rocks here. Your best bet is to be there in the early morning - around 6-7 AM.

For the small critters (except beavers), a good place to go is the Ringneck Creek (especially the left side), between the "E" and "M" of Lemoyne. Get there in the evening around 8-9 PM and you should get one or two of each species required to spawn. It's also a short ride to Rhodes from there, which makes mailing off your perfect carcasses quick and easy. Unlike the birds, the star ranking on the small critters does matter so make sure you’re only going for the three-star ones.

If you're worried, craft the trinket you get from the Legendary Pronghorn Horn (not accessible until post-game), as it keeps animals on the horse from spoiling. The trinket you get from the Legendary Buck Antler may help as well.

ROUND 1:
  • Rabbit
  • Squirrel

ROUND 2:
  • Cardinal
  • Rat
  • Woodpecker

ROUND 3:
  • Chipmunk
  • Opossum
  • Oriole
  • Robin

ROUND 4:
  • Bullfrog
  • Skunk
  • Songbird
  • Sparrow
  • Toad

ROUND 5:
  • Bat
  • Beaver
  • Blue Jay
  • Cedar Waxwing
  • Crow
Once you've fulfilled all five requests, you will get mail at the post office which will spawn a mission marker near Strawberry. You will finally get the squirrel statue. Take it to Beecher's Hope and put it on the fireplace mantel. Go away for 24 hours and return to Beecher's Hope to start a week-long game of hide and seek with it. Every time you find the squirrel, put it back on the mantel, go away for 24 hours and return to Beecher's Hope.

Harry94 has put together a video showing all of the hiding spots - skip to the 6min mark: LINK

You need to complete all 5 "Hunt Requests" from Miss Hobbs, the first request is in Valentine in the post office on the notice wall. Or on other mails, depending on the stage of the game. The rest come by mail with a reward for the previous one.
After all orders are completed, you need to place the squirrel over the fireplace on your farm. And return it to its original place after it “runs away”.

Please note that all carcasses must be of excellent quality (3 stars), use a Varmint carbine and a bow and arrow for small game, you can send an order only after you have collected all the animals from the current request.

An amulet made from the horn of a male deer will also be useful to you - “When skinning animals, the player receives items of higher quality.”
After this, you can raise birds with two stars, but at the same time of excellent quality.

I recommend the beach marked with a cross; during the day all the birds from the area flock to it, almost all of them are needed by Miss Hobbs.
There are also toads and skunks, on the opposite side in the evening you can find squirrels and hares, at night you can hunt pumas for the Master Hunter 6 test. If you don’t like standing in one place, take a walk downstream and pay attention to the stones in the river, the birds will be waiting you there.

Don’t rush to stock up on carcasses for the 5th request if you haven’t reached the epilogue yet, Miss Hobbs is going on vacation in the main game and you will have to collect them again in the epilogue.

For all the requirements, it is not the skins that are needed, but the animal carcasses themselves.
In the task, they require any subspecies of animals, for example: Woodpecker, here you can find Carolina melanerpes or Crested woodpecker
Oriole - suitable for the task Baltimore Orioles or Masked Colored Tropials

Hunting task 1:

- Squirrel (Red Squirrel, Western Gray Squirrel, Carolina Squirrel)
- Rabbit (Black-tailed Hare)

Hunting Mission 2:
- Red Cardinal
- Rat (Black Rat, Gray Rat)
- Woodpecker (Carolina melanerpes, Crested woodpecker)

Hunting Mission 3:
- Little Chipmunk
- Virginia opossum
- Oriole (Masked Colored Tropial, Baltimore Oriole)
- Wandering Thrush

Hunting Mission 4:
- Songbird (Red-black piranga, Red-headed piranga)
- Sparrow (Wood Sparrow, Sparrow Bunting, Black-browed Bunting)

- Striped Skunk
- Bullfrog

Hunting Mission 5:

If you can’t find the poster, then go to Rhodes and complete the Black and White quest (collect 5 posters about Rhodes with their faces, one of which is located right at the station). After that, get some sleep and go to Rhodes Station - the request should appear.

The hint above from Bblebon is fundamentally wrong , the number of stars an animal has shows you the quality of the skin, but not the quality of the carcass, the quality of the carcass depends on how many shots you fired to kill the animal and with what weapon, I’ll explain with an example: in the second task you kill a rat with one star from a bow with an arrow for small game and get an excellent carcass, or kill the same rat with a pump-action shotgun only with 3 stars and get a bad carcass of the animal, so the animal is suitable with any number of stars...tested personally
Ps The tips come from video guides, video guides from Western colleagues, but the guys seem to have trouble with translation... that’s why they write nonsense to mislead you

Foxistr is wrong, you cannot get an excellent carcass from an animal with 1 one star. Stars can only be reduced by a bad shot, but not increased in any way. Yes, you can use the perk from the amulet to get an excellent skin, but only if the animal was originally with 3 stars, and you ruined it with a shot and, say, the carcass already has 2 stars, then when you remove the skin there is a chance of getting an excellent skin, but the carcass will remain either bad (1 star) or good (2 stars)

You can put the stuffed squirrel on the shelf only after completing the game. Not the storyline, but the game. That is, after completing two epilogues. Since you will play (Spoiler alert!!!!!) for John Marston, who will build his farm, which, in turn, will be completed only at the end of the game. After the final credits, you can continue to explore the world, and a white mark with a question mark will appear on the map. It will be located right next to John's house. You will need to enter the house, go to the fireplace, place the stuffed animal on the shelf, after which a small cut-scene will begin and a line will start with the loss of this figurine.

Bblebon is wrong, you can skin carcasses. Yesterday I skinned a rabbit worth 3 stars and poisoned the carcass as part of a quest.

Killed a legendary deer and made an amulet. I saw a woodpecker with three stars, shot with a Varmint rifle - two stars, a good carcass was added instead of an excellent one. No matter how many times I tried, a three-star carcass was never added when I ruined it to two. Don't take risks if you see a rare small animal or bird like a woodpecker - use your bow to kill with a small game arrow in Dead Eye mode. You'll only save yourself some nerves.

Let me add that absolutely all animals for this trophy can be one-shotted with a Varmint carbine. A bow and arrow are not needed for small game. Even for a beaver.

Do not stock up on those carcasses that are hung on a horse: hare (rabbit), possum, skunk, beaver. A day must pass between requests, during which time the carcass will rot and you will have to search again. The rest: birds, toads, rats, chipmunks, squirrels can be collected immediately. This is especially true for opossums and skunks. Personally, I got tired of looking for them and in total I have about 4 of them rotted.

To make the squirrel disappear quickly after you put it in place, save the game and load it immediately, the squirrel will disappear, the last time it will be on the mountain

All tasks with video demonstration from 1-5 requirements *click*
I’ll add that to find out the suitability category of the carcass you need to pay attention to the STARS located to the left of the animal’s name
1 star - bad
2 stars - good
3 stars - perfect (required)
Hare = Rabbit, if anything
!DO NOT REFRESH THE CARCASE!

ImperialAmber's hint is correct in terms of skins, but not correct in terms of carcasses - the amulet also works on it. Therefore, when completing this quest, I recommend that you first catch two legendary animals - pronghorn and deer. Their horns make excellent amulets. Here is one that removes this penalty: i.e. if initially the animal had three stars, but you hit it a couple of times or, for example, hit a squirrel with a gun instead of a bow, then the carcass will have two stars. But it is still considered excellent quality! The second amulet is useful in that it prevents the carcass from going rotten, which will lie not in the bag, but on the horse: in each task there is one such animal. If you don't get to the post office on time, the carcass will be lost. This amulet here will be a useful bonus for you.

When searching, I advise you to keep a list of all carcasses for all requests in front of your eyes, because... where you go for them, almost everything is there and this will speed up the gathering. I searched for an oriole for a long time, and in the process I collected carcasses according to the following requests, in advance. As a result, after I found this oriole and sent it, according to a new request I already had 4 out of 5 carcasses (there was not enough skunk, and that was because he fell off his horse). After the skunk, I sent everything in the same way and again it was 4 out of 5, the beaver was missing.

After you place the stuffed squirrel on the shelf, the trophy will not appear. You need to sleep outside the farm for 24 hours and after that the stuffed squirrel will be stolen. You will need to find it and put it in place (you will need to repeat it 6 times). You will need to look for the scarecrow in these places:
1) Chest in John's room
2) Fireplace in John's room.
3) Chest in the attic. You can climb to the attic using the stairs located in the kitchen
4) To the right of the barn, in the sheep pen
5) Inside the barn (you will need to go up the stairs and you will see a chest
6) North of Strawsbury, on Mount Shann. See screenshot

The trophy is not glitched.
To obtain it you need:
Place the squirrel on the shelf. After 1-2 game days it will disappear. You can find it in a chest in Marston's room. We put it on and it disappears again. The second time it will lie in the chimney in Marston's room. The third time, the squirrel will be in one of the chests in the attic (in the kitchen there is a staircase leading to the attic). The fourth time the squirrel will be lying to the right of the barn in the sheep pen. For the fifth time, the squirrel will be lying on Mount Shann (slightly to the right and below the last letter N in the word SHANN). I took the squirrel for the fifth time and got a trophy.

The fifth time the squirrel will lie in the chest of the barn on the second floor, and only then the 6th time on the mountain!

When you accept one or another hunting request, the spawning of the desired animals decreases sharply (especially for the blackbird). Therefore, I advise you to first collect everything you need, and then take the request. This trick can only be done with small animals that the character puts in a bag because they do not rot. In principle, large ones are also possible, but just before you go, take a request with them otherwise they will go bad.

To the right of the barn. There is a wheelbarrow in the sheep pen, and there is a squirrel in it.
