How to unlock the Clemency Pays achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

In order to obtain this achievement, you will need the lasso earned after the 6th mission with Bonnie MacFarlane; "Wild Horse, Tamed Passions".

The mission order is:
1. Exodus in America
2. New Friends, Old Problems
3. Obstacles in Our Path
4. This Is Armadillo, USA
5. Women and Cattle
6. Wild Horse, Tamed Passions
**Thanks to DimitriRascalov for supplying the mission order!**

Once you have procured your lasso, you will need to find a wanted poster located outside of a Sheriff's/Lawman's office. (I used the one on MacFarlane ranch). **Note: Wanted posters show up on your map as a greyish/white skull** View the poster by pressing "B" and select the bounty by pressing "Y". Once the bounty mission is selected, you will see a red skull appear on your map, this is the wanted man you are trying to capture.

Follow the map to the marker and fight the kill the posse protecting your wanted man but DO NOT KILL THE WANTED MAN. Once you have taken care of your prey's posse, select your lasso, target the wanted man and rope 'em. **Note: to make this easier on yourself, switch the targeting in your options to normal or casual, this way you can lock on the bandit and make him easier to rope**

Once the man is roped, hold on to the left trigger, walk up to the roped man and press "Y" to hogtie him. It is then the simple matter of picking the man up, putting him on your horse and taking him back to town. You may have to deal with other posse members out for revenge as you take him back so be quick. Once you drop off the hogtied man to the Lawmen, the achievement will pop after a short cutscene of them walking him into the jail. There you have it, an easy 10 Gamerscore.

Let me know if I am missing anything.

Excelsior!

It's actually the 6th mission (Wild Horses, Tamed Passions) with Bonnie where you get your lasso. The order is:
Exodus in America
New Friends, Old Problems
Obstacles in Our Path
This Is Armadillo, USA
Women and Cattle
Wild Horse, Tamed Passions

No thumbs down vote, but change it and I'll give you a thumbs up.

Once you lasso him, can you drag all the way back to town (while fighting off his posse)?

Doubtful. If you drag a man long enough, he will die. It may work if the bounty is close to the town you bring it back to. I'll test it out. If anyone else sucessfully does this let myself and Woodmans Stroke know

One more piece of advice here... screw the element of surprise. Shoot the horses first and THEN shoot the guards. A few flesh wounds are easy enough to deal with, but chasing your bounty across half of New Austin on horseback is a waste of time that can be avoided by shooting their horses.

Is it possible to miss this achievement if I kill all the bounties? That is, do the bounties respawn eventually or are they a one-shot deal?

Something you may want to add: Bounty targets are not available until you complete the Marshall Johnson mission Political Realities in Armadillo, which is mission 8.

Great solution. Let me add a couple things.

The bounty target is likely to be shooting at you and if you don't want to risk being killed by him before you can hogtie him, activate dead-eye and shoot him in the arm to disarm him before pulling out the lasso to hogtie him.

Secondly, on the way back to drop off the bounty with the local law the waves of outlaws that come gunning for you to get their guy back might shoot your horse. If this happens the best thing you can do is leave the hogtied bounty on the ground and wait for the next wave of outlaws. Use Dead-Eye targeting to kill them all quickly, then quickly switch to your lasso and try to snag a dead outlaw's horse. If this doesn't work you'll just have to defend yourself from a few waves while trying to whistle for your horse... your horse WILL respawn after it gets killed but it takes a few minutes before you can call it again.

Follow MAJOR SMALLMAN' guide and you cant go wrong. I created this video to show you how I got the achievement following their guide. All I can say is once you get that wanted person on the back of your horse get him back to the town as fast as possible - I had a little troule with his friends that kept on coming.

The easiest method for getting wanted poster symbols (the skulls) on the map to appear once you unlock bounties is to be at a major settlement at 7:30 in the morning, since that is when the wanted bounties are posted. In New Austin, go to Armadillo or Hennigan's Stead, in Nuevo Paraiso, go to Escalera, Chuparosa, or El Presidio, and in West Elizabeth hang around Blackwater, among other locations. Knowing this is also very important for getting the Redeemed (100% completion) achievement which requires you to do wanted posters a lot.

If you show up to a town or wake up after 8:00 in the morning you will have missed the wanted poster. That is why it may seem hard to get one to appear, as you have to be precise with your timing in terms of arriving at a major settlement that would post wanted bounties.

The bounty you try to capture may or may not try to run away as you approach him at his hideout, but regardless, once you have him on your horse you can expect waves of reinforcements to come after you. The amount of resistance depends on the bounty value; bounties in Armadillo, say, may be $80 if captured alive, while bounties out of Blackwater may fetch up to $600 if alive.

This one is very easy. When you go to catch your bounty you will have to kill his posse. Go ahead and to this, just be carefull not to kill the Star on your map, this will be your bounty. Once everyone else is dead move towards your bounty, who will probably ride off on a horse after his posse is dead. This will actually make it easier. Any way, switch your weapons to "lasso" also known as your "rope". squeeze the left trigger to bring it out and catch him. once you do this "hog tie" him and put him on your horse. You will then take him back to the sherriff on the back of your horse. Once he is returned alive, wa-la, your done

To be able to get this trophy you will need the Lasso which you unlock after the "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions" mission and complete the "Political Realities in Armadillo" mission to unlock bounty missions. You can find bounty missions in large towns including Armadillo, Chaparosa, Escalera and Blackwater. They will be marked with a skull icon on your map. You can either accept a bounty with the button or decline it with the button. Once you accept a bounty, a red skull will appear on your map with the bounty location. Every bounty will be surrounded by his gang so take them out to make the bounty easier by leaving him for last.

Equip your Lasso by bringing up the weapon wheel by holding and aim it by locking onto an enemy with , get close to the enemy, release with then hogtie him with . Pick him up with and call your horse, then place the bounty on your horse then ride to the jail. Be careful while taking him to the jail as 3 enemies will be after you at any given time.

This can be fairly tricky if your bounty starts to make a run for it. Find any wanted poster in the various towns (marked with a skull on your map). Accept the bounty and make your way to the bounty's location. Take out the various enemies but do not kill the red skull marked on your map, instead shoot out his legs. Once he stumbled quickly change to your lasso and wrangle him. You can change to your lasso by holding the and selecting it with the . Once you rope the bounty press and hold the and quickly hogtie him with the . If you're not quick enough the bounty will escape.

Pick up the bounty, and then place him on the back of your house. Make your way back to the wanted poster to claim your reward and achievement.
