Use a pardon letter with more than $5000 bounty.

2.5%

How to unlock the Friends in High Places achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

The best and quickest way to get a $5,000 bounty is to go to the town of Armadillo and camp in the doctor's office, located on the opposite end of town from the train station. Simply take cover behind the desk and kill anyone and everyone. Once the cops stop spawning you'll need to ride out of town and then go back into town to get them to respawn. This will take about 20-30 minutes to accomplish but be patient and don't rush. Check out my video located at the bottom of this guide for a good visual guide.

********WARNING*******
It has come to my attention, thanks to a comment by Gamer God87, that sometimes the prompt to turn in your pardon letter will come up without having to press Y. So when you go to turn in your pardon letter, stand there for a moment, if nothing comes up then press Y to get the prompt to come up to press B to turn in your pardon letter.

I'm guessing this got a negative vote already because one of the other guys with a guide got upset? McDurbin is just giving an alternate suggesting. If you don't like his hiding spot, just use the other guide that is identical, just in a different spot. Don't be so negative :)

Do you have to get rid of your Wanted level before you take the pardon letter to the telegraph office?

I'm thinking that is what you have to do. But after I got a $5000 bounty the police didn't stop coming for me. So thats when I made a rush for the train station to turn my pardon letter in, like the guides say, and he wasn't there. I'm going to try it tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply concerning this solution. Please report your findings. I was maybe thinking maybe I can escape and create a campfire site and hide there for a little bit then go back into town to turn in the pardon letter. I need to get me another pardon letter first since I wasted the first one.

This is fine advice. But the other way works fine if you do it correctly. I even intentionally scared away the guy in the station and if you rode out of town after losing the law like I explained you can still turn in your letter.

Another thing you can do to save your progress often is to go back and forth between a couple horse deeds while performing this. It will save your progress as you go. I rode around Blackwater doing this and did it in about 30 mins.

I made the mistake of saving during the time I wasn't recording. For some reason when I saved and started up the next wave of lawmen the door to the building I was trying to get into was locked. Luckily I was able to survive and when I came back to the town again the door was unlocked.

So you gave my solution a negative vote because you ran out of pardon letters before trying for this achievement? That makes no sense whatsoever. I don't see how hiding in the doctor's office wouldn't work, unless you suck at shooting people.

I guess they updated the game, It took me like 4 hours to get a 5000 dollar bounty and didnt make it to the payoff..

No, they haven't updated the game. If you don't do it early in the game then your honor/fame will be to high so killing people will only be worth half of what it should be.

First off, great solution, if you're patient anyhow. I would also make a recommendation that while you are taking down officer, do it using dead eye and make them all headshots to help in getting the "Bullseye" achievement.

I was at 3,500 bounty and I left town to make the police respawn. When I got back I shot somebody. I ran to the doctors office but the door wouldn't open, causing me to get shot. Is this because I killed the shopkeeper?

By Potatoman80 on 23 Jul 2011 17:53
I'm not sure what causes that, but it happened to me when I was recording so I had to redo my video. It didn't happen when I did it the second time. It may have something to do with the shops being closed at night maybe.

By Potatoman80 on 24 Jul 2011 17:25
Oh! It just hit me, if you kill someone before you get back in the doctors office then that causes your wanted level to come back and when you have a wanted level all the shops close up. So get back in the doctors office before you start killing.

After failing on the red brick building at Blackwater, This method works very well. I was able to rack up kills and rinse and repeat till I had the 5000. The enemies do stop spawning which is funny. but it gives you a chance to get out of town and save etc.

The doctors office wasnwhat worked for me, but onebthing that cost me some time was I paid my bounty instead of giving a pardon letter. I had 5 pardon letters in my inventory from paying it off when I accidentally killed lawmen before, so if you have letters already, it doesn't cost you 5k to remove the bounty

Hey guys. Durbin's solution is pretty much what I did. My sweet hiding spot is on the roof of the train station where you can kill a good 15-20 guys and then when the lawmen swarm in you will want to crouch behind the big billboard sign on the roof of the building. Make sure you kill the guys on the side of the building as well. But if you crouch there while the swarm you the wanted level will go all the way down. All of the guys will be underneath you cursing. Once they are right under you and your wanted level is back down run west which is behind you and they shouldn't chase you. Make a camp site and save the game. Hopefully you will have $1000 bounty or so. Once you save go back to the roof of the train station. To get up there just jump and grab the roof from station platform. Kill more guys and try to get the bounty high as you can before the swarm comes in and they get underneath you. The wanted status will disappear again. Just rinse and repeat till you have over $5000. Now here is the cool part. While on top of the building and your wanted level clean walk around on the roof till you see the Y button prompt in the bottom right corner to pay bounty. It should teleport you in front of the guy to pay for the bounty. I saw this, but I didn't do it. I rode to McFarlene's Ranch to pay my bounty off. This took me about 2 hrs because I did different things to just play it safe, but you could do exactly what Durbin says or use this roof method. Also what Weezy says is true as well. When I went into McFarlene's to pay bounty with the letter the guy was not there, but once I pressed Y button he showed up.

Best place to win this is in Blackwater. You need to keep the Pardon letter you got from Seth earlier. So do not give it away.
Once you have Blackwater unlocked you can use it.

- You need to climb up on the top of the tall building in front of the Train station
- Stay very near the ladder, you can see many civilians showing up on your 11'o clock and 4'o clock (facing towards station), one by one.
- You can get upto 10 kills per minute, which is close to 500$ in bounty, just by moving LS around in these 2 directions and shooting people there.
- The cops will never climb up but they can shoot you from 5'o clock. You can immediately hit RB to take cover if you are taking hits, or go to Dead-eye and shoot them. Killing cops will fetch you 100$ bounty for each kill.

- Once you get bounty of above 5000$. Make Marston take cover by the duct in the middle of the roof. Wait for few minutes once everything cools down.
- Now climb down and run towards the station
- Enter the office on the left side and show the letter to the clerk there

I found an easier way. Got to Blackwater start shooting a bunch of people then go to your room (where you save) and post up using R1 on the right side of the door directly across from the top of the steps. They will keep coming after you, occasionally on will stay on the bottom floor and you have to go down and shoot him. If they stop coming go outside shoot a couple more folks and run back to your room. Save as needed. I didn't die once.

blackwater is the best place to get it. What I did was buy some moonshine for 30 dollar each. Then shoot a sheriff or two, after that take your moonshine and then you have 10 secs unlimited dead eye. If you killed two sherrifs al the others will come towards you. And you can simply click on their heads with rb in dead eye. Once every sheriff is dead you will loose your wanted but not your bounty. Then save it in the saloon if you have hired a room. And do it again that's the quickest way to get it. You don't have to wait till they respawn again only save:)

The reason you can't see i got the achievement is because my internet connection gets back next week thursday if everything goes allright ( I switched from internet provider but it went wrong)

"Once you are able to access Blackwater enter the tower from the west side near the train station. You will see a large brick building which says [Welcome to Blackwater]. There is only one way onto this building, and the AI can't climb. Climb up to the top of the building and start to kill people. If you follow the pattern of this video you will earn $5,000 bounty in no time.

As you start killing people the law will start to arrive. At the start standing at the top of the ladder leaves you open to attack but once there are 7 or so law enforcers they all hang around the buildings. Once you hit this number you will be safe to stand at the top of the ladder, use the camera to spring from left to right, this will produce an infinite amount of AI for you to kill.

Once your bounty hit $5,000 duck behind vent on the roof until your wanted level goes away. Make a run for the train station and use a pardon letter, you should have at least 1 if you have completed the hideouts or all of Seth's missions."

That's the best solution on the site, just with a quick flick of the camera left then right one or two more people (often one of them a police officer) appeared back on the street next to the park and town hall... worked far faster and easier than anything I'd tried before. Thanks!

thanks for posting this. Great solution. took me a few tries but i finally got it. i would suggest doing this during the day and stock up on ammo. I would also suggest waiting a while before climbing off the building. Got killed twice just getting off. Like an idioit i got there and pressed the wrong button to pay off instead of using the letter. But it does work better than any solution on here. TKS

This one is actually really easy. Thanks to McDurbin for advice to clean up the strategy a bit. Make sure you have a pardon letter before you do this! It's just a little time consuming.

To go along with Befallen. You can easily hide out in your room at Armadillo. Just start shooting up the town. I found hiding in front of your dresser...er armoire gives you a clear shot of both doors to your room and the law always seems disoriented when they first enter the room. So Dead Eye makes it like shooting fish in a barrel...if it were the fish who had a gun and was shooting the people trying to come into the barrel...eh anyway.

Every once in a while you will kill all the lawmen in the town and everyone magically forgets you just slaughtered the town. I would just hop on the horse and ride out away from the town and eventually more lawmen will spawn. Just keep it up til you reach the bounty required then head to the train station right across the way from your room and turn in your letter. Edit: You can't turn in the letter while the law is pursuing you. LOSE THE LAW BEFORE TRYING TO TURN IN YOUR LETTER! Don't rush to the station while "Wanted" to turn in the letter as the train station attendent will not be there since he is still running for his life. Do it this way then when the law is off your back you can turn in your letter and you won't be wasting your time like another already did. I have even been able to turn in the letter when the attendent isn't there. It still gave me the option to pay bounty or turn in pardon.

Also if you are not wanting to lose your honor like I did, just save a seperate file to load and wipe out all your bad deeds. You can also use your bandanna if you have it to prevent honor loss as well. Thanks to metrodome934 since some people didn't seem to have the luck I did I guess. Also one thing I'm not too clear on is I did get killed once. I still had bounty but it was probably more than $500 less than it was before I died. Don't know what this means yet.

If you vote negative make to sure give me some tips on what to improve. I can't tell what I'm doing if you don't let me know. I'm not trying to give bad advice here.

what worked for me was to go all Lee H. Oswald on the AI townsfolk of blackwater (sniping from a building) instead of a rambo killing rampage or any grassy knoll busyness.

here's how i did it:
went to blackwater, stocked up on ammo (used my repeater) and meds and file saved. BE SURE ITS DAYTIME or all the townsfolk will be sleeping. ;) keep file saving until its daytime.

then go to the train station. directly across the station is a red brick building; you'll see painted on the building a Crick's advertisement and a mural of a man's face. To the left of the Crick's ad is a ladder. climb up to the very top of the building (2 ladders); don't stop at the first landing; go all the way up.

Once up there, make sure you are standing at center of the ladder facing the train station and start pecking unsuspecting townsfolk off. if you are in the precise spot at the top of the ladder, you can quickscope and shoot ahead to people at the train station and then toggle quickly to the right facing the courtyard/town hall and snipe people running out of that alley by a wood fence. you can quickly toggle between right and left, quick scope, shoot and there will be an endless loop of AI townsfolk to quickly get your $5k bounty (within 10 minutes max).

if the marshalls shoot you, duck behind cover and use your meds if needed. BE WARY, the townsfolk gentlemen attempt to be heroes and they might try to shoot at you as well. if for any reason you get shot or the AI townsfolk are not spawning in a quick, endless loop, you are not in the precise position at the top of the ladder.

once you have your bounty, duck and hide somewhere on the roof and be sure to face the ladder (sometimes the marshalls get the bright idea to climb up and get you) and wait for the red WANTED to disappear. once it's gone you can turn in your pardon. just make sure you don't call any attention to yourself on the way there.

before i found the sweet spot, i had attempted to duck behind cover and ran around the edges of the building. i would recommend you dont choose this route as it takes 3x as long to reach your $5k bounty (took me 20mins to get just $1k!!), you have to wait FOREVER for any AI to be within shot range, you are more likely to fall off the building or be within their shot range and killed, and i got terribly frustrated with the height of the roof ledges which left only 3 good shooting positions, plus i did it in the middle of the night, so no one was around to kill. duh - me.

**OH and you will notice your Honor depleting, which if you're trying to get the Man of Honor/Chivalry's Dead achv this activity is good for boosting your dishonor. but if you're trying to go for the highest honor rank, dont have fear, thats why i said game save before going for the Bounty achv. just load your game save and your stats are all preserved! =D

I have done this achievement in Chuparosa on the balkony of the building with "El Alcalde de Chuparosa"-text on it. It is the big building at the end of the town. From above you have a good view over the whole city and the officers are riding trough one of the gates towards your fire.

It is quiet easy to shoot them down from their horses (and kill the horses too ;-)). The bounty raises slightly. If you come over 2500 Mexican Dollar, the amount of people raises, so you are just quicker by killing them. Of course you should use your bandana, if you are a "good guy".

Mostly the officers come from the gate "far" away over the marketplace, but sometimes they only appear on the "near gate". While I pushed my bounty, only one officer comes upside to me, but with a short look at the minimap you should see it.

You start off with a pardon so all you need is to either start killing many people until you reach a bounty of $5000 from the very beginning of the game or wait until you reach armadillo. If you wait for armadillo you can use the save point and just unleash bullets onto everyone and use the second floor as a vantage point since you will have full cover from all the entrances. You then take the pardon to the closest rail station and just ring the bell and collect your achievement.

First shoot a few civi's to get a bounty (in Armadillo), then run around the back of the building next to the general store (further away from the train station) and climb onto the crates and onto the roof. Take cover behind the bricks or if they are behind run to the back. When the lawmen stop spawning run into the wilderness, set up camp and travel to Blackwater. Go to the top floor of the saloon and shoot them out the windows facing the street, or if you become over-run take cover behind the bar. Oh and make sure you have plenty ammo and dead-eye :)

The Armadillo saloon worked best for me. If you stay on the top floor inside, you can use the railing at the top of the stairs as great cover. If you're holed up in the saloon, your wanted level will never go down, and the lawmen will never stop coming. They will come from 4 places: the front swinging doors, a door to the left also on the front of the building, directly underneath you, and (on very rare occasion) the second floor balcony right above the front doors.

Horse deeds make perfect save points here. Since the lawmen are infinite, use one to save every $500-$1000 bounty added (alternate 2 deeds if you can't use the same one??) and you don't have to worry about losing progress if you happen to die.

Once you hit $5000, use a horse deed and either try to lose your wanted level or die and load right into the safehouse in the saloon (you will load into wanted status, but you can easily escape).

I found it much easier to do it in Chuparosa
I shot the driver of the train when it was standing still in the station (I wanted to see if I could drive a train myself, to bad, you can't).
Since I committed a crime, the deputies were alerted and came to arrest/shoot me. But I noticed that they don't enter the train, nor really shoot at me. So I went for the achievement.

That's how I did it. I stayed inside the train, shooting at everyone outside, getting cover from the train itself. I stayed in the passengers wagon, but I think any wagon will do.
If the deputies/sheriffs don't spawn any more (this happens with me every $2000 bounty), just whistle your horse (or save first). Get on the horse, run outside the settlement, but don't go to far (I just went down the hill and back up).
When you re-enter Chuparosa, the train will still be there, the civilians will be respawned and you can start it all over again (bounty doesn't disappear when the wanted level reaches zero).

It was very easy for me, didn't had to rush a thing, never came in real problems or so. When you have the $5k bounty, shoot the remaining deputies/sheriffs, and use the pardon letter.

Oh, it can be a bit tricky if you want to shoot the guys through the windows, since the camera is a bit misplaced here. It seems like you are aiming at your target, but instead you will shoot at the wood next to the window. Use right/left on the D-pad to shift the camera and you'll get a better view.

Hope this helps for those who have a lot of problems surviving elsewhere.

If the above methods don't work well for you, then here's another one that you can try. I found that the easiest way to do this is to go to McFarlane's Ranch and shoot the door to the jail. Immediately, you're wanted level will show up, and the bounty will begin. If you are going to kill anyone, be sure to do so when you're wanted level is in red, otherwise, you won't increase the bounty for doing kills. Also, if you want to increase the bounty even by a little bit, kill animals in the process as well.

Once you have killed everyone on the ranch (it won't take very long, it usually took me between 3-5 minutes) go and save. Once you reload your save, everyone in the town will respawn, and your bounty will stay what it was the last time you saved. I like this method a lot, because if you die somehow, then you can reload your last save with the bounty you had, so it is more of a checkpoint than anything. It wouldn't be cool if you got all the way up to $5000 and died, because then you'd have to redo the whole thing again.

I found the easiest way to do this was to ride into Armadillo, shoot up the Sheriff and his deputies (or shoot a passerby and make sure there are eyewitnesses), wait for the marshalls to appear and then ride south about quarter-of-a-mile and stop atop the low ridge. The marshalls will give chase, but there are only a few ways up onto the ridge, so it's simple to pick them off as they appear. Once they're all dead and your wanted level disappears (I found it a lot easier to lose your wanted level out in the open than when cornered in a building), make a campsite and save your game, then ride into Armadillo and do it again. I was getting roughly $500 bounty added each time I did this. Once you reach $5k bounty, kill the marshalls to lose your wanted level again and then ride into Armadillo and use the pardon letter.

It's best to have a fairly decent horse when doing this, just in case you get caught out and need to run further afield but, unless you get sloppy, this probably won't be an issue.

Do what sarangIND and many others have said with the building in Blackwater. Only thing i have to add is instead of standing close to the ladder is stand on the courner of the wall by the ladder after you have killed the law right in front of the building and to your right towards the court house. Now here is where it changes a little.

1) From here set your aim to Casual.
2) Pull out your Buffalo Rifle
3) Spin around with the right stick in a clock wise circle
3) Once you are faceing the building next to the train station pull LT and you should auto aim on a civy or a poilce officer
4) Fire
5) Once that person is killed keep spinning and once your facing the court house do the the same thing again. LT then fire
6) Keep spinning in this circle and there should be another person in front of the train station by time you get back to it and same with the other spawn.

Now dont move the left stick or you will fall off the wall. Keep doing this and some times you will get 2 law peeps at each spawn. When i was doing it i never stopped spinning untill my aim was locked on to someone. I got well over the 5k in just a short time. Dont worry if there isnt someone at the spawn just keep spinning and next time you come back to it they should be there.

Also use your horse deeds to save while your on the roof. Cant believe no one has mentioned this yet in all the guilds i have looked up for this. It works like an auto save and is also good to use during mission if your not done with the game yet.

As people have stated i started in Armadillo and wiped out the whole town there, then moved on to Blackwater and finished off my bounty but while doing so I ran into town and started killing people then ran with my horse to the outside of town. I had all of the guys come straight towards me and just kept picking them off with my evans repeater, it was really simple. I personally don't like to be in a cramped area cause the escape is usually hard, i prefer an open area in case i need to run. So for me I took these steps.

1. Get a wide area and have the law come straight towards you and pick them off, remember that when entering dead eye your ammo refills
2. Have medicine with you, i would carry maximum in case you get close to dying
3.Have a fast horse in case you need to escape

I havent read all of the other guides so sorry i repeated what has been already said

I got this in Armadillo too, But I started at the Macfarlane Ranch, start killing people there, until everyone stops respawning, then saddle up and head for armadillo, with any luck, you'll have around 600-1000 on your head once you reach armadillo, get into the saloon, and begin shooting people, the lawmen will spawn outside, and, providing you keep in the back corner, near the bar and the entrance to the poker room, they'll only try to enter via the swing doors (which are amazingly bullet proof, so you'll have to headshot people stood outside), or the back door next to the bar, which allows for easy execution kills.

If you're injured, duck into the corridor outside the poker room, and wait for your health to renew, once you reach 5000, either hide and hope for the best, or make a break out of the back door, and kill any chasing bounty hunters to clear your wanted level.

I managed this on my first attempt once i had the route planned out, auto aim helps too.

I found the easiest way to do this as follows:
1. Stock up on medicine
2. Go into Armadillo, Kill all officers
3. Ride out of town, set up camp, transport to Blackwater
4. Kill all officers, ride out of town, transport to Armadillo
5. Rinse and repeat until bounty hits $5,000

I guess it's also worth noting to take the medicine as your health drops, thought it was kind of a given that's what you should do with it though.

Oh, then of course go and use the pardon letter, as that is what will pop the cheevo.

Ok, first you can get this achievement once you unlock Blackwater. I would suggest you to buy the bandana from the taylor so your honor won't change (optional). Buy lots of medicine and ammo from the local doctor and gunsmith. You can get pardon letters from Seth, and citizens will give them to you as gifts randomly once your honor has reached its maximum. Once you are ready, climb to the the roof of the Blackwater Hotel. There is only one way for the law to get to (climbing the fire escape). Plus if you want to escape the law, then take the bandana off the crouch in the middle of the roof. Then just kill everything in site (including horses). Every time your bounty reaches another thousand dollars, save the game by buying two horse deeds and switching between horses (saves the game instantly). I learned that the hard way. It will take about 20-30 minutes, but you will get your bounty over $5,000 eventually.

Many different areas to do your killing, what I did was position myself in an area where I can shoot some people, earn some bounty against me, and make a quick getaway. Try to save after each $500-$1,000 bounty you get in the event you get killed so you don't have to start over. It does take a little while to get to $5,000 so you want to to be safe, save your game once you get in the clear and can use your campsite. In addition, try to do your shooting on horseback in order to facilitate your quick getaways.

The places I shot up to gain bounty were Armadillo, MacFarlane's Ranch (where you have an easily accessible safehouse) and Blackwater. You don't want to go to Thieves Landing for there is complete lawlessness and you cannot get wanted no matter how many people you shoot.

And as you may expect, make sure you have a pardon letter on hand and that you use it in the same country (US/Mexico) you gained the bounty in.

Luckily a $5000 bounty can be easily achieved if you keep saving your progress after every $1000 or so. Go to Blackwater and climb the ladder that's behind the Theater, there will be another ladder that you have to climb after that to get to the roof. Once you're on the roof go straight and look to your left, there's a roof of a lower building you can jump to from the ledge, climb up the ledge and jump off it. Once you're on this roof start shooting everything in sight. Make sure you have lots of ammo and create a new save for this as it will bring your Honor down and make everyone scared of you.

You can keep saving your game as long as every bounty hunter is killed so you don't have to get $5000 in one go. Once you've reached a $5000 bounty use a pardon letter at the Telemarket station just down the street from the building in Blackwater, then the trophy will unlock. You get pardon letters every time you complete a gang hideout but you can only have 5 at any given time. When attempting this trophy, you will want to also go for the Heading South on a White Bronco trophy at the same time. You need to kill at least 20 sheriffs before the US Marshals are after you.

Here is a visual walkthrough, credit goes to leadexample:

You will be given your first pardon letter by Seth, instead of using it hold onto the letter and just pay off the bounty instead. If you do use this pardon letter early on, you can earn more by completing the hideout side missions. I suggest you make a new save and attempt this away from your main save file. Once you have completed the requirements you can then load back your original save and continue playing through the story.

Once you have access to The North you can then make your way to Blackwater. On the western side of town you will find a train station. Just across the street is a large red brick building, which has the title "Welcome to Blackwater" painted on the site. Climb to the top of this building and start killing people. You can stand at the top of the ladder and pick people off as you see them. If you span the camera around from the town hall lawn to the train station you will find an infinite loop of AI civilians. Keep killing people until you reach $5,000 bounty. You can now duck behind cover on top of the building and wait for your wanted level to vanish.

Once your wanted level has dropped make a run for the train station and use your pardon letter to void your bounty. Do not shoot anyone as you make your way to the train station, if you do your wanted level will go back up and using the letter won't be possible.

The easiest thing to do is in Blackwater, put on a bandana so as not to get a negative reputation, climb the stairs to the roof, stand on the stairs and shoot whoever we see, you don’t need to leave the stairs, otherwise the guardians of the law will start hiding under the building, just look around and shoot, the process is not fast.
Upon reaching the WANTED amount of $5,000, we wait until they stop looking for us and go down, run to the telegraph office and hand over the pardon document.
