How to unlock the What About Hand Grenades? achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide
Just keep trying will take some time but once you get the hang of it,it is easy.
Important: Make sure you line up the arm, not the horseshoe
Definitely go during the day behind your first house on the MacFarlane ranch, it's easiest. The bets shouldn't matter, but it's good to have the pressure off. Take your time to feel out the practice shots to save yourself time later. Aim with LT first and LINE UP THE ARM, not the horseshoe. The horseshoe will follow the path of the arm. Then take the time to build your momentum. The meter should be green when you release, not red. Bring your arm all the way back with the RS and forward, pulling RT right on the white line. You need to be pretty spot on here. If the wind is in your favor, you have yourself a ringer. (If not, re-aim for each shot and be sure to rub more luck into your horseshoe.)
When you are holding LT to line up a shot, hold the RS all the way up and then when you let go of LT drag the RS all the way back down and then back up to the middle to make your release, this way the meter should be a solid green instead of some lukewarm green/yellow colour. This is what proved the most effective for me, and finally landed me the achieveable.
Edit: Good thing to add thanks to helpful commentors. A good place to find a game of horseshoe is behind your house at the beginning. When the lady saves you there should be one on the ranch behind your house.
Edit: After you throw it you MUST re aim.

Unsuccessful attempts: I centered the pin exactly half way between the two points of the horse-shoe when I aimed. Then I tried for a more "line drive" throw with minimal arc and just enough distance to land at the pin. I re-tried this method again and again for a while without success. The aim (right to left) seemed inconsistant... I am not sure if that was because Marston throws from both sides of the pit he stands in for different rounds. I hit the pin over ten times but always bouncing off of it and not getting a ringer.
Successful in first game: While aiming, I kept the pin centered between the left part of the horse-shoe and Marston's finger. I went for much more of an arc, which I got by swinging my arm with more force... It then landed and the achievement popped without me even realizing or expecting a ringer.
I am posting this since the videos I found were not very helpful when I tried to recreate them. I spent a lot of wasted time trying to do this, and I hope my descriptions can save you some time. This achievement can be frustrating.

-Throw full speed
--Release just before the white line (you will over throw releasing on or after the white line)
Should get this in a few tries, Good luck!
- As soon as you are on the line for the throw, zoom and set the aim, don't waste time here.
- Aim such a way that center of the horse-shoe is aligned with the ring.
- Immediately pull RS down and pull up again
- Hit RT to release when the bar on the left side reaches the marker (at 60% of the bar)
You may not get it on the first try, but you will get it within 10 throws for sure.
First attempt I must have played 30+ full games of horseshoes. I got frustrated and gave up. Next day I won it on my first game.
Sometimes you just need some time away.
I found that I got closest, and eventually got the Ringer, when the green bar was between the middle and top lines shown next to the bar (preferably just after the middle line, hitting it seems to put you short of it).
Winning a game of horseshoes will require some patience as you line up your shots. Take your time and aim carefully, use the to aim your throw, then pull and push the to build up speed. You will want to land a green power bar between the two markers. This will take a lot of patience unless you get lucky within your first few tries.
You will find a game of Horseshoes in the following locations:
- Las Hermanas
- MacFarlane's Ranch
- Tathskeller Fork
This trophy is quite tricky as you have to get your Horseshoe onto a ringer pole. You are able to access this game early on in the game at MacFarlane's Ranch, however the horseshoe pits at Rathskeller Fork are way easier to get a ringer on because they are closer together than the ones in MacFarlane's Ranch. If you are having trouble getting a ringer, attempt it on Rathskeller Fork instead. You get two chances per round so keep practising until you get it. Aim with and make sure the middle of the horseshoe is aiming straight at the pole, then move the down then up and try to stop at the middle line. If done correctly you will hit the pole with your horseshoe. Sometimes I would have a perfect throw that still wouldn't hit the pole so it does take some luck.
