How to unlock the Hail Mary achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

This achievement can easily be done in a private free roam match with
just yourself as it can be obtained by killing an NPC.
A good place to go is the Twin Rocks gang hideout. There are two members of Walton's gang up high on rocks, so just keeping on chucking tomahawks from an estimated distance of 35 yards. Eventually one will connect and achievement unlocked.
If you run out of tomahawks, just let yourself die.

Cheers!

Got it on the last tomahawk, luckily the guy didn't notice the other 9 whizzing past his head...not the most perceptive AI.

This is the way I got it. I finally hit the first guy on the high rocks in Twin Rocks, from about 38 yards away.

There's a pretty convenient rock to hide behind, right below this guy.

I swear my tomahawk doesnt travel past 10-15 yards when aiming at another player. I will give this a try.

I tried this method which resulted in me dieting repeatedly to the Walton Gang after I ran out of my first round of Tomahawks. Then I went and got it in Armadillo on the 4th try. Sorry but -1.

Yeah I'm just gonna try and hit some poor shmuck in a town. Fighting the Walton Gang seems like extra work.

Got this last night. I overlooked the "private free roam" part and was trying for ages in the main single player campaign to no avail. As soon as I jumped to a private online session I got it straight away. Launched one at an unsuspecting schmuck standing against a lamppost down the street in Blackwater lol.

This achievement can be done on any NPC, in any area of the map.

I completed it just by spawning, equipping my tomahawk, and throwing it at a person standing outside the saloon in Armadillo. I was on the opposite side of the middle street and aimed a little above the head and threw it, and boom. Achievement unlocked.

I tried this on the Walton gang hidehout at Twin Peaks, where there are two guys high up on rocks. I had the distance right but could never connect. Kept dying, getting shot at, repositioning.

This is the way to go, murdering some poor NPC in a town when they least suspect it. Got it not long after trying it that way. Fighting a gang is just extra work.

Credit for this video goes to Achievement Hunters/Rooster Teeth. Found this pretty hard since you have to get the shot just right and if you did get it you have to make sure you were far enough back. But patience is the key.

This is a very easy achievement to do.
Simply go into a private match with 1 of your friends and stand 36 yards apart from each other. Aim directly on your friend and move the aim slightly above their head. This is a trial and error method so keep on trying and you will eventually get it.
It also shows the distance of the throw in the kill cam so use this to your advantage!

I done this with a friend in private game, its not that hard, you'll either get it your first go or after several attempts with not much problem.

Make sure your 35 yards away from your friend, you can test this by killing your friend form a distance then asking him how much it said on his screen, once you are in the right position and ready, aim slightly higher to your friends head and throw. It took me around 50 throws to get this but my friend got his on his first go so I guess this achievement hugely grows on luck so if you keep trying your bound to get it.

If you run out of Tomahawks then get your friend to kill you so you respawn with more. I done this on Macfarlanes Ranch on a flat area.

Good luck.

I would recommend any attempt involving throwing down as opposed to straight forward. It makes aiming a lot easier, though the accuracy of the tomahawk is pretty awful.

My friend got it in a grab bag match, aimed towards the bag and left fly when people came near.

Much easier in free roam/private match with a willing victim.

This can be done in free roam.

Set up a private free roam and inite a friend or two. Arm yourself with the tomahawk and get throwing!

A couple of tips -
1 - There is a real art to throwing the tomahawk. Locking onto someone and throwing will just see your tomahawk fall short. You need to lock on, but then aim higher so the natural arc of the tomahawk sees it come down and hit your target (preferably in the head).
2- You may need to slightly alter your aim left or right depending on how your first couple of throws turn out.
3 - If you have 2or 3 friends, gather them all together and have them stand in a tight group 35 yards away. This gives you multiple targets to aim at and hit, making it easier to strike and kill one.
4 - Avoid hatcheting any lawmen while doing this, or else you'll be used as target practice!!!

I found it really easy to just go into any town (I did Armadillo) and stand a good distance away from any NPC that I standing still in a good spot and fire away. Tried a couple other methods but this seemed to work for me after 3 or 4 throws.

i found this achievement to be easiest when done in plainview by the oil rigs..
grab a buddy and start a private free roam session and make your way to plainview.
have person trying to get achievement climb up an oil rig and the other stand directly in front of the ladder 35 yards away... much easier and more accurate then flat ground. if you die jump to your death and make your way back.

Got this achievement by accident whilst in a free roam session.

All, I did was go to, Casa Madrugada in, Mexico and stand on the wall of the train station, looking towards the villa and threw the tomahawk at one of the NPC'S that were leaning on the rail of the balcony. You will need to aim quite high and maybe have a couple of throws.

There are two ways to complete this; one is to invite a friend into a free roam and start throwing tomahawks at each other from various distances. The other involves throwing tomahawks down onto enemies from a great height. This achievement will require a lot of trial and error so be prepared to spend a few minutes with various trial and error attempts.

If you don't want to do this with someone else, head to Pike's Basin, start the hideout and allow yourself to die. You will now start at the very top of the canyon, instead of heading down, head to the far right of the canyon where you will find the furthest most objective. Stand up on the ridge and pick a target. You're now going to want to aim about an inch above the targets head. Throw a Tomahawk, then move your crosshair up if you miss. Keep doing this until you hit the enemy below.

Attempting this on flat ground can be quite tricky and require a lot of trial and error. With the Pike's Basin method you will already be well above your enemy and have a good 100 yards or so, you just need to hit the enemy.

This is a stressful trophy to obtain. There are many locations to get this trophy so it's best going for this trophy with someone you have on your friends list and not just any random person. This can be done on any player. Below are four easy locations to try to get the trophy at:

1.Start off at MacFarlane's Ranch and head down to where the horses are and have one player stand in the middle while you throw the Tomahawk at him/her until the trophy pops. Keep in mind you have 10 Tomahawks so don't waste them.

2. You can head to Tensoro Azul and aim for the NPC that hangs out outside the door of the hideout. Make sure you are a good distance away.

3. Just outside Blackwater. Throw it at an NPC and you should be able to obtain it that way too. Credit to J3R3MY5 for this tip.
