How to unlock the Hit the Trail achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

Start a public FREE ROAM session and head to a transport station (The icon is a carriage wheel). Select Blackwater and you'll spawn somewhere near the edge of the town. It's best to rank up so you don't have to ride on a donkey. Press start and head to your map. Set a waypoint to Escalera and wait til the sun rises at 6AM before you start on your trek. Now all you have to do is make it to Escalera before the sun goes down and the achievement will unlock.

NOTE: You can get killed and still get the achievement as long as you make it before the alotted time.

If the sun is shining bright and it's 7 o'clock, it's the morning. If it looks like dusk or is dark out, it's the evening. Go by that standard to determine what time it is.

You can also steal a horse if you only have donkey available to you. There are bunch in and around Blackwater.

Basically if you've ever waken up in the morning, go by that as a reference to start. And Yes you can steal horses around the map. It's just easier if you rank up so you can call your horse just in case someone kills your horse.

I did it by getting to Blackwater whilst it was still dark and just hanging around until I saw sunrise. It takes about 10mins at a casual pace to get there, which is ample time :)

If I control my horse with my feet because I want to use my hands to eat a turkey sandwich, how many minutes in real time will it take me?

But in all seriousness, this achievement isn't hard. Just set a waypoint down at Escalera while starting at Blackwater, and then follow the line all the way. The achievement popped on my first try.

Keep watching the clock until it clicks past 6am. I was standing by the Blackmiths on the corner leaving Blackwater. THe suggested route via Fort Mercer is a little long-winded so I followed the route to Benedict's Point, across the rail bridge, then followed the main path to Escalera. Arrived not long after 8am.

It really doesn't matter what path you take. Just start no later than 1 pm and you'll get the achievement. My solution is just for those who want to do it the easiest way without shortcuts.

Some stats from my run;

Real time, the run took 9 minutes 50 seconds.

Game time, it took 2 hrs 30 minutes (left Blackwater at 06:00 and arrived at Escalera at 08:30)

Really easy. Also, it helps when you have a near empty free roam session. When I started my trip, there was only 1 other guy. He left when I was at midway on my trip. A public free roam session with only me, it would be pretty hard to miss it.

fast travelled to Blackwater and it was noon. I couldn't be bothered to wait till the next morning's sunrise so just went for it. Just followed the path outlined by using the waypoint and reached Escalera just before 6pm.

Cool. Just got it. Lucky enough when I started friendly free roam, I was in Blackwater and it was 7am.
Didn't get a notice, so I thought I did wrong but then I remember I turned the notices off so I didn't get the notice popup but still got the achievement unlocked.. lol

Cant spawn a horse...great. I've heard you can do it on foot in time but I'd rather not mash A for 15+ mins.

Takes a while, but you can eventually get into a non glitched lobby where your horse actually spawns :)

How do you know what time of the day it is? Might sound stupid but I can't read that clock. I was fairly certain that I had left at 6:00 A.M. and was then in Escalara by 10:00 A.M. but no achievement. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, and that was my third attempT. Please HELP!

If you want you can even do this in a Friendly Free Roam session, that way you won't get killed as long as you don't do anything to attract the attentions of the law, other players can't kill you in this mode, though you obviously could still be unlucky enough to get twats taking pot-shots at your horse, which they can still kill. Pretty easy achievement though, takes less than 10 minutes following the railway lines

I left Blackwater at 12 noon on the dot. Made it Escalera no problem. I used the train tracks that go south after passing Thieves Landing and it felt quick.

Start at the Blackwater Trainstation (eastern most part of your map) at 0600

the fastest and easiest way to get this is to follow the railroad tracks, for some reason the horse runs faster, also you dont have to following pointless winding trails. whenever the railroads fork, just take the left hand track keep following the track until you pass Chuparosa once pass the town keep following the tracks until you see the bridge that goes back to the US (DO NOT CROSS THE BRIDGE) before the bridge get off the tracks and head to Escalara.

once you enter the town the achievement will pop.

if you leave at 0600 you should arrive at the town around noon.

It's not been mentioned yet but you can complete this achievment on foot. Takes ~8 hours game time.

Just follow the railway lines into Mexico as detailed in the above solutions.

{Helps towards the 'Foot Traveler' ranks for multiplayer experience too.}

A great way to keep your horse at a maximum speed is as follows: get your horse going as fast as you can, listen to the gallops and separate them into 4's, press A on the first 3 gallops and don't press it on the 4th. By doing this, you maximize your horses speed, but allow its stamina to stay almost untouched in the long run. The pattern is 1, 2, 3, off, 1, 2, 3, off. It works :)

This achievement requires you to get from Blackwater (which is East of Tall Trees and hard to miss) to Escalera, which is in Southwest Mexico, before sundown. A perfect place to start is in the town square of Blackwater, at around 9:00 am. Stick near the train tracks to avoid being killed by inconsiderate online jerks. Follow the train tracks across Butterbridge, and then head West to Escalera. You shouldn't have too much difficulty accomplishing this.
Cheers!

You have to start at black water best time is 6am(game time)just follow the railroad tracks once in Mexico continue following the tracks till u reach a bridge, then just chart a path to escalera. If you start at 6am you have enough time.
12
2

Before you start this make sure the clock on the start menu has at least 6 or so hours of light. The sun rises at 6am and sets at around 5pm, use the transport hubs to make your way up to Blackwater. Bring up your map and then move down to the bottom left hand corner and place a marker at Escalera. Once you're ready make your way from Blackwater down to Escalera, be careful to avoid other players, as most will shoot at you regardless.

Make sure that Blackwater and Escalera have appeared at least once on your screen so you know that you're in the right area. If you're slightly outside the town areas it will not register that you have entered the town.

As the description says, get from Blackwater to Escalera before sundown in a public Free Roam session. To be safe join a friendly Free Roam session that way people won't be able to mess with you. Start at Blackwater and wait for it to be the break of dawn, have a mark going to Escalera so you already have a route. When the sun comes up, travel to Escalera. It's a long ride but if you travel with no stops anywhere else you should get to Escalera with a lot of time to spare before sundown.
