How to unlock the Put the Posse on a Pedestal achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide
If you are without friends make sure you start the attempt in a fairly busy free-roam session, attempt to acquire people to help you in you're cause but be wary of joining other posses. If you have enough points to get 50k by joining a posse then go for it, but if you join a big posse and the leader changes game modes you could lose all you're progress.
Alternatively, as suggested if there is a posse with over 50k joining them will unlock the achievement.
XP events positively effect your posse points.
I found that getting a bounty and building it up seemed to be a great; alternative way of getting posse points. The higher your bounty, the more posse points you will receive for each kill. Just make sure you can get to an ammo box easily.

Enter into a Friendly Free Roam session. First thing you’ll want to do is whistle for your mount (D-pad up). If it doesn’t come, you’re in a glitched lobby, and can proceed with the solution; if it does come, you’ll need to find a new session (Back + Friendly Free Roam).
Note:
Glitched lobbies seem very inconsistent; you may start out in a glitched lobby, then at some point it may change from being glitched. This might have something to do with people leaving and entering the lobby. Also, if someone gets too close to the hideout, it seems to prevent you from being able to continuously complete it. A lot of the time if you just wait long enough, the lobby will return to being glitched. Just be aware, if you leave the session, your points will reset.
Access the list of players in the lobby (Back + RB) and send everyone in the session a posse invite. YOU MUST BE IN A POSSE TO UNLOCK THIS ACHIEVEMENT (although, you are able to create the posse once you’ve reached the 50K. The achievement will pop either way).
Then bring up the map and place a waypoint on the Fort Mercer Gang Hideout (directly below Rio Bravo). Proceed to the nearest Transport (fast travel wheel icon on map), access it, and press A to warp to your waypoint.
Once you arrive, you’ll immediately complete the Hideout and receive 400 XP. Press left on the D-pad to replay the Hideout; again, you’ll immediately complete it and receive 400 XP. Now, continue spamming left on the D-pad and you will continue to replay/complete it, each time netting you 400 XP.
Eventually, you will reach 50,000 points and the achievement will pop. If you hadn’t created a posse previously, simply do so now and upon someone joining you will receive the achievement. Hope this was helpful and happy hunting!
Although the achievement's description says you must earn over 50,000 Posse points, it fails to say that Posse Points are the same thing as Experience Points. So, technically, you must earn 9,001 experience points.
For this achievement, you'll need to earn a total of 50,000 points as a Posse. For obvious reasons, having more members in your posse will make the achievement much easier to obtain. The more team members you have, the less points everyone must earn. Completing hideouts is the fastest way to earn points. Pike's Basin will earn you a good 1000-2000 points per run, depending on how many other people are completing it with you, whereas Twin Rocks will earn you 200-500 points. However, Twin Rocks is much faster to complete.
Distribute your team mates throughout all hideouts and the achievement will be yours in no time.
You can join a posse that has already started earning points in a public free roam and the points will still help you earn the trophy. You can also form a posse of 8, but you don't have to earn points together, just while in a posse. For example, half the people can split from the group of 8 and do Hunting Grounds while the other half can go and do Gang Hideouts. Just stay in a posse and don't break it. Hunting Grounds are black circles with 2 white circles inside and Gang Hideouts are black circles with a white bandit face and hat.
If your teammate leaves or gets disconnected, your posse’s points will drop and you will only be left with just the points the remaining player(s) have. When the disconnected player joins again he will start off with 0 points.
If you get 50,000 points and you invite other players to your posse they will get that trophy too, as long as they have the DLC and you still have total posse points of at least 50,000.
To do this with 2-3 people, form a posse and go to Solomon’s Folly where you can net about 500 or more posse points in about a minute. This trophy will take around an hour and a half to obtain with 2-3 people.
A better method if you have a bigger posse, 5-8 people. The trophy will be obtained in less than an hour if you achieve more posse points. The narrator will alert your posse to your progress. He will announce when you reach 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and then after you reach 50,000. He even announces your individual points.
There are two ways to check your stats: while in free roam right after the Hideout you are doing has ended and the stats page pops up, and when you are not in a mission.
1. When you finish a Gang Hideout, hold and the points will pop up with your score and the players in your posse; next to the posse leader will be the total posse points.
2. After you complete a Gang Hideout or Hunting Ground, you get the personal stat screen that says Total XP, and press to get the posse points for that run, that is your score toward your posse points + what your posse gets.
