After you get to the second area of the game "Burial Point" one of the early missions is "One of Us". During this mission the Bloody Tom cultists will not shoot at you unless you provoke them by shooting at them, entering the base anywhere other than the main gate, or stealing from them. If you follow along the mission and stay friendly you will be tasked with collecting a blood offering from a bloodbag. When you find the bloodbag hooked up to a machine in Bladewell Sea Caves instead of filling the container, first go around the back of the cave to the right of it. There you will find a hose you can interact with. Interact to contaminate the bloodbag with fuel. Return to the bloodbag and fill the container. Go back to the cultist camp and put the contaminated blood offering into the bowl. The bowl you need to bring the offering to is between the Bloodwell Campgrounds and Bloodwell Ranger Station. It is on a wooden platform under the crane holding a door.

Save file deletion _does_ work; I just did it myself. The fact it sets a checkpoint is irrelevant, as the save you're restoring from the cloud should be before that point.
