How to unlock the AR&D achievement in RESEARCH and DESTROY - Definitive Guide

Ensure you are completing the challenges related to all of the enemy types (kill x amount I believe was all there ever were) that way you are able to buy the advanced versions of research.

Focus a good majority of your funds on the research. I finished the game with only a couple hundred dollars left, so I barely scraped by. Upon finishing the game, the only way I can see you getting more funds is to allow regions to get attacked, then defend or lose on purpose so you have more opportunities to attack and win back more funds.

Does anyone know where the Nosferatu looking vampires spawn? Is it just chance based or are there specific threat levels or regions where they can spawn? I haven't seen any of them since the level they were introduced in, and a few in the final mission, but neither of those two missions count them as progress to the advanced research. I'm stumped.

One way to tell are the picture symbols that pop up on top of each region that you either need to assault or defend. The enemies that will spawn on that map will cycle through with their designated picture. Otherwise, I believe it is random. Kinda like trolls spawning during the university defend missions. Kinda a crap-shoot.

Started my second playthrough and they started spawning like crazy. Got 4 in one level! I think when you close the last portal, the one that leads to the final mission, they tend to stop spawning. I must've forgotten to science the remains on some of them in my 1st game. So, pro tip, science the remains! It is also not cumulative until you finish the basic research. If you kill 5 of them before doing the basic research, in the great words of Gimli son of Gloin, that still only counts as 1. Because of that, I still gotta get lucky with the rng, lol.

Edit: I can confirm that you don't need to do all supernatural research in 1 game. I got the Vampire on my 2nd playthrough, and the cheev popped. (Also, it seems that the vampire only spawn on the 3rd segment of a portal mission.)

Vampires (nosferatu looking ones) can appear in university defense missions. They definitely do not need to be on the third part of a portal mission.

If you are missing Cubes then you can find one towards the end of the final mission. Just replay it again if you need both.
