How to unlock the Minimalist achievement in RESIDENT EVIL 3 - Definitive Guide

This achievement is one of the more annoying ones to earn, albeit easy to achieve.

You CAN use the two extra hip pouches earned through the shop.

You CAN reload a save if you make a mistake.

To do this I recommend playing on STANDARD and NOT Assisted. The reason for this is in Assisted mode Jill starts with an Assault Rifle which takes up two inventory slots. Obviously you cant put this in the item box due to the nature of the achievement.

(NOTE: Cryptic Flair pointed out that by starting out on Standard mode and letting zombies kill you a few times after collecting your bonus hip pouches, the game will ask you if you wish to switch to Assisted. Doing this will allow you to play on assisted mode with your additional extra pouches and the Assault Rifle.)

Play through the game on your preferred difficulty, being careful not to interact with the item box. Keep an eye out for handgun ammo and do your best to always keep at least one extra heal on you. I recommend never having more than two full stacks of one item as it will take up precious inventory space.

Picking up the grenade launcher will take two inventory slots along with the additional ammo taking up more. I chose to pick up the grenade launcher and had about one or two free slots left which is enough to get you through the game.

If you don't want to pick up the grenade launcher, I definitely recommend at least grabbing the shotgun. Otherwise you'd be doing a "pistols only" run with Jill. Props to you if you do that.

Its VERY important to make use of the Hip Pouches found throughout Racoon City. Here is Gamespots guide to find all 6 of them- https://www.gamespot.com/amp-articles/resident-evil-3-remake...

Aside from that, this achievement is fairly straightforward. Here are some extra tips I utilized.

-it's very easy to open the item box by mistake. To avoid this make sure whatever your trying to interact with has the button prompt to interact with it before doing so. If you think you made a mistake, check your records tab. Under the challenge called "Minimalist" it will show how many times you opened the box. If it's more then zero, you will need to reload your save.

-Make sure your always combining items together to increase space.

-You can still combine items from the ground even if you dont have space to pick them up.

-If you have a small stack of a minor item (ie. handgun ammo, red herb, etc) dont hesitate to drop it. Those item are in abundance unless you're on a higher difficulty.

-Dont worry about picking up many flame rounds. Flame rounds aren't the most effective thing against bosses. Although they are nice to use as an alternative to your precious explosive rounds, the game gives you a lot of flame rounds. It's okay to keep a full stack but I would throw away the rest.

-Dont worry about Explosive B. As the tip above describes, flame rounds aren't too important. Acid rounds are provided toward the endgame segment just before fighting 3 Hunter b's. Because of the power of explosive rounds, try to only collect and craft them by combining two Explosive A.

Any further information you guys provide or I discover I will update this solution with. Please leave your feedback and good luck gamers!

I actually suggest to do it on Assisted. Collect 1 Heal, all Hip Pouches (In the beginning dont forget the jewels - always deliver 1 after another) and collect all Assault Rifle Ammo on the way. Do NOT use the Assault Rifle outside of Bossfights. You should be fine with Pistol only, since you only have to fight 1 Hunter Beta as Jill which can be dodged.

Hey, OP, great guide! Just an additional piece of advice for you and BatLB's recommendations -- if you start on Standard, and then let enemies kill you a few times, you can force the game down to Assisted difficulty. You then keep the additional hip pouches from the store that you start with on Standard, if you've bought them!

@Cryptic Flair Thanks for letting me know. I didn't even think of that. I will update the guide.

The bolt cutters definitely become discard-able.

You can drop the bolt cutters after you reach the sewers and you can drop the lockpick after reaching the hospital basement.

Just a heads up, I got this achievement while opening boxes to get ammo.... But I didn't open any boxes or lockers that required the lock pick or bolt cutters. Dunno if it glitched for me or the requirements are a bit easier than stated. Might be worse contacting a developer to get more info on this one.

@DARK X STEVE It's for not using the item box to store things and/or picking up store unlockables. Not for opening regular silver boxes or wooden crates for ammo.

Unless I'm mistaken, why put it on Standard for the extra hip pouches when you start with 4 extra spaces on Assisted anyway?

Store items. If you buy the 2 extra pouches in the store, all mode starts with 4 extra slots but only assisted start with the assault rifle.

starting on assisted you start with 12. starting on standard you start with 8. but if you pick up the pouches on standard then downgrade to assisted you end up having 16, plus the assault rifle

Is there anyway to use the infinite ammo guns while going for this achievement?

I thought it wouldn’t be too difficult to get this and the 2hrs achievement on the same run with the unlimited assault rifle … except to use that would require opening a damn box 😐 I think I’ll do no box and 2hrs on separate runs but it’s kind of a bummer the game doesn’t let you have unlimited ammo for this

Assisted mode is ridiculously easy if you know the game. You don't need the extra pouches.
I got Minimalist , I Might Need These Later! and Sprinter all in the same Assisted run, you don't need to be afraid.
I took the handgun (no upgrades), the shotgun (with upgrades, occuping 2 slots) and the granade laucher. Skipped the magnum, cause it's too much effort to grab. And it was a cake walk.
I got Rank A because I saved a lot, but you don't even need the typewriter tbh, the autosave is enough.

If you’re not picking up the shotgun I don’t recommend doing the jewel puzzle. Regardless of what order you put the jewels in it’s always Grenade, Shotgun Stock and finally the pouch. As far as I can tell you can’t discard weapon parts in this game, so you’ll be stuck with it if you forgo the shotgun.

Some items eventually become discardable if you don’t use them where it’s possible and you progress too far. Such as Brad’s ID Card for Carlos. I feel like the bolt cutters would too after progressing enough but...you’ll be stuck with it for awhile if you don’t plan on getting the shotgun.

Assisted Mode adds 2 pouches by itself to accommodate adding the assault rifle to your inventory. By using the trick mentioned in the guide, you can skip getting two pouches so it’s possible to skip the jewel one and still max out on inventory. I don’t believe you can Go above the max...not sure what would happen if you did. Regardless it’s why the store pouches aren’t in assisted mode as you already start with 2 automatically.

Also I don’t believe you have to die a few times to switch from Standard to Assisted. As with the demo just one death made it possible. I assume you’re referring to the message that tries to force it on you right? You don’t even need to wait for that. As soon as you die once just hit X (you’ll see the option at the bottom to change mode) and it’ll give you the rundown on assisted mode. It’s funny I didn’t pick up the pouches before the autosave and even though I let the zombie outside kill me, the two pouches were still available to pick up once I switched modes. So you can’t initially start on assisted and get the bonus pouches but you can get them after the switch.

I’m still playing through it now so I am not completely certain if the bolt cutters become discardable later down the line.

Just got this one with ease on Assisted. The free assault rifle does take up 2 slots, but you're starting with an extra 4 and the game also dumps ammo for it on you constantly. This means you can ignore handgun ammo and all handgun upgrades (mainly the moderator, which expands it to a second slot). Avoid the semi-auto barrel for the shotgun and it'll also only take up one spot. I skipped the grenade launcher in the sewer, since it takes two slots and the ammo doesn't stack very high. This made it easy to pass on collecting explosives too. The game keeps trying to force the grenade launcher on you; I must've seen it 3 or 4 times total. I finally snagged it right before you go up against Nemesis in the acid pit, when I was through with all the quest items and the game was also supplying tons of grenade rounds. Throughout the playthrough, you'll have to leave lots of health items behind; you just won't need them. And keep in mind you can "store" items in an area you'll be in for a while by just not picking them up—this is pretty helpful in the opening Racoon City area, since you spend a lot of time here and the backtracking takes you back past the items you left behind.

If you haven't purchased the hip pouches in the Shop, I highly recommend you tackle this one on Standard difficulty. But if you have, it will expand your on-person inventory at the first safe room by four slots. Only pick up items that will propel the story forward and items you know you'll need. Make weapon pick ups a priority as the two handguns on Jill won't be necessary since they both use the same ammo type. Also, try not to run "I Might Need These Later!" with this run since you may get seriously hurt as the coins are located in the item box, especially when fighting Nemesis Stage 3. Save precious ammo by skipping fights by running by them. Hoard Lighting Hawk ammo as this weapon is beast later on against tougher enemies. Just combine high grade powder to make more ammo of it.

If you see an item you don't need, leave it. It will take up a necessary slot in your inventory that you'll just discard anyway. Combine ammo slots so that won't take up necessary slots, and load your weapons often.
