How to unlock the Trivia Overlord achievement in Return to Monkey Island - Definitive Guide

It appears that trivia cards spawn based on some amount of time instead of having a chance to spawn when entering an area, and they also won't spawn if you're currently carrying 10 or more unanswered cards so make sure you're answering them as you pick them up. If you fail a card you can still pick up another one to replace it, and progress tracks between all playthroughs. Although once you reach Act V I think you won't find any more cards.

Each area has multiple locations a card can spawn at, and sometimes cards can look crumpled so they may be hard to spot. But they do not spawn randomly in the area as each area's card locations are fixed so they only spawn at certain locations but the location it spawns it is random. Leaving and re-entering an area doesn't seem to do much to get them to spawn faster, it very much seems like it's based on some amount of time since you last picked up a card in that area.

So to grind this out, get to Act IV and progress far enough that you've unlocked every area you can. Every 20 minutes or so (you can turn the game off and come back, you don't need to leave it running) make a run through every area and picking up as many cards as you can find. Solve them, wait another 20 minutes and repeat. Having saves from different playthroughs may also help and switching back and forth between them.

You can use this guide for the answers: https://legendofmi.com/features/articles/return-to-monkey-is...

For the card that asks for the location to Cogg Island (I'm not sure how many are like this, but this specific one can only be gotten on a subsequent playthrough), just choose the only answer that has a letter and then a number like this "M.7".

For finding the cards holding LB and RB together will highlight everything on screen which should make finding the cards a little bit easier

This is all accurate. I found it helpful to have saves to load right after completing the mop tree but not leaving Melee, upon starting LeShip the first time after dropping Murray into the bowl, right when you get to Monkey Island and are underwater, and when you have access to the complete map. I would flip between these to scan Melee, Monkey, LeShip, Scurvy, and Brrrmuda. Barebones rarely spawns it's one card, and Terror Island never spawns (for me) after finding Herman. It will take a long time to get all 100, but just keep at it.

One thing I noticed. After a couple play throughs, I started a new game. Searching every area on Melee, I amazingly found around 10 cards within a few minutes. Then I decided to start a new game and try again. I found zero cards. The trivia cards seem to be universal regardless of saves and games. So, if you save before answering and get the answer wrong, reloading the save doesn’t give you the card back.

Yeah, the cards are per-profile and not per-save so they go between all of your saves so save scumming to answer them won't work.

If you have a good idea where the cards normally are after obtaining the book

Run through each area and collect them up to any point you desire I stopped on chapter 4

Turn of the game I did wait 20 minutes or so

And start a new game and repeat

Don't forget to hold LB and RB to help slightly

At one point I had 86 cards started a new game and by the middle of chapter 2 (on the boat) I found 14 cards and got this last achievement

Saving and reloading do not work I found new game after quitting out of game and waiting..so much easier and the game is not long probably takes 45mins to reach chapter 4 once you know what your doing

Worth knowing triva cards are saved separately
So if you load a previous save and find a card it will remain with you if you load a later save

None of the cards can be missed, if you fail one it will eventually show up again. Only reason you'd need to start a new game to get more cards is if you progress too far into the game (Act V) and don't get any more card spawns.

Got it today, like the guide and comments say best to just keep playing chapter 4 and waiting 20 mins to do another run through, got it fairly quickly that method.

is it best to keep playing? I only need to get cards and finish the game in 2 hours. I keep reloading every 20min and only get 2-6 cards depending sometimes its less.

I was able to grind this out in about 30 minutes or so - if you change the time on your actual PC via settings, and just move it an hour ahead or so, then everything will respawn. I had a save on chapter 4, would run through and collect every card I could, then quit to main menu, and skip time forward on my PC. Load back up the save and it worked! Cards respawned everytime

What really helped me was these 3 things

Press and hold 'TAB' on PC (not sure about XBOX but it should be in the controller mappings) to highlight interactable objects

A saved game at the start of each chapter - I was able to load one and find the trivia cards on monkey island and places I couldnt go in later chapters. They carried over into my main save

Get as many as you can in each section, then leave the game for a few hours and come back. Confirmed they are on a timer and semi randomly spawned (each area has a few and they appear in certain spots)

@NoHeroes94 I don't think it's necessary to delete saves, I've had a card not track but as soon as I got the next one it went up by two.

@Tundra Boy Muc Well that isn't true, or wasn't when my answer 50 achievement glitched and didn't count.

Actually the same thing happened to me. I checked my trackers after every single card picked up/answered and there was one time where the tracker didn't go up on the 50 cards achievement but did on the others. I was prepared to delete my save, but thought I'd do another card to see what happened first and sure enough, the tracker jumped up by two to fix itself. Never had any tracker issues outside of that, so maybe they've fixed it in an update.

I made a save in every part and just switched around between the save files to find the trivia cards, I found this to be the easiest way.

Glad to see it isn't just me. I found 10 new ones right away, but can't seem to get more after days. Apparently someone said it pushed out the achievement requirements to 170 too. I'm kind of hoping I can get me 50 now that way. Only 30 or so more to go!

Not a whole lot of sites have updated their original 100 list to the new 170 questions, recommend referencing this guide here instead of the gamerant one listed above that is outdated https://legendofmi.com/features/articles/return-to-monkey-is...

I found they were not spawning on my main story run (on Hard) but they seems to crop up a lot more on the Casual run I used for the Speed Run. Not going to an area for a while does seem to help, leaving a save at Monkey Island also gives another location

I have no doubt in my mind that the CASUAL run has way higher rate of trivia card spawn than in HARD mode. Definitely grinding out in my casual Speedrun

Can confirm that once you've checked all the locations thoroughly, you should just pause the game and go do something else for at least an hour or two. Then come back and more will have spawned. I'm at 73 and I still haven't found the Cogg card.

What happens if you answer cards incorrectly. Do you have to start a new game to get the achievement? I am not sure I understand the system entirely.

This may be the worst collectible achievement ever. The random spawns suck. Been looking for my last card for 4 hours.

Edit: Finally got it. Starting a new game (multiple times) might help you get your last few cards in the opening areas of Part 1.

Here's some of the places I came across cards that other sites/guides don't seem to mention:

- On your ship when you're out in the ocean (the screen where you dive into the ocean).
- In the town hall on Brrr Muda Island, sitting on one of the tables.
- Also in the courthouse on Brrr Muda Island.
- On Barebones Island.
- On the path when you enter Terror Island, and the same with Scurvy Island.
- Every different lime grove on Scurvy Island can potentially hide a card, though I've never had more than 2-3 appear. I found my 100th card here after going through a bunch of groves.

One information that might be helpful to add to the solution:
Apparently you should *NOT* run around looking for cards as you need to be away from an area for some time for a card to be able to spawn there and if you constantly run through all areas looking for cards then the timer constantly gets reset.
That comes directly from the twitter account of the developer (link found via reddit):

Found a tracking fix but you need to be attentive.

As I have with other games which have glitched, I deleted my console save when I noticed the tracking error (at 57/100 cards in my case - should have been at 58). It resynced and I was back at 52/100 cards (last game hard quit).

Upon reloading, I then picked up 7 more cards before answering any. Tracking didn't update at 58/100 correct answers, but when answering my 59th card it jumped from 57% to 59% correct. Had to do it again in the mid-80's, so have tested this method twice.

TL;DR - I'd recommend:
- Pinning achievement tracking, ensuring every correct answer tracks the appropriate % on all achievements (especially this one, should go up 1% each time). If all is well, and only if everything tracks, quit the game when you're run out of spawned cards to bank a cloud save to minimise progress loss should an issue arise.

- Any tracking issues, DO NOT quit the game - go to Dashboard with game still active > Monkey Island > Manage Game > Delete console save ONLY (it'll force quit). Reload the game and it'll resync. You'll unfortunately lose any cards since you're last hard quit (6 in my case) but when you get past your glitched card number, the % should realign.

If you know what trivia cards look like and when and where to search scroll down to "heres the important bit"

when you first get to the scumm bar youll find the trivia book, you ned this to collect the trivia cards

the cards can be on any scene in the game, for example the scumm bar, barebones island, le chucks ship(deck, lechucks cabin, below deck corridor) melee (on the docks, voodoo shop, fish shop, jail, locksmith, mayors mansion, back alley, lookout point, museum, museum woods path, stans shipyard) , scurvy island on any of the many interaction points and occasionally on berrrrmuda and terror island.

The trivia cards are light browny beige in colour and can be flat or crumpled, completely on show or slightly tucked into creveses, under matts, tucked into doors etc.

To find them its best to have a lot of areas unlocked, so as alot of people say when researching this achievement wait until chapter 4. I had all of the areas unlocked available and could move in between them using the ship you build with elaine.

Heres the important bit!!! Do a run through all the areas you have available and look for trivia cards. Checking every available screen i was getting between 8-15 cards. Then get back on the boat, save and quit the game and and do something else for at least an hour, some people say 20 minutes but it didnt work for me.

DO NOT CONTINUALLY KEEP LOOKING, EACH AREA HAS A TIMER FOR RESPAWNING CARDS AND EVERY TIME YOU REENTER THE AREA YOU RESET THE TIMER AND WILL FIND 0-1 CARD.

After an hour run through all the areas again and youll get another 8-15 cards. Use the walkthrough provided by marklynx and the link below to answer the questions, if you get them wrong the card will eventually respawn. Doing it this way youll only have to do between 10-20 searchs instead of running around and just hoping youll find something

Throughout the game you'll be able to pick up trivia cards that you can put into the trivia book found in the SCUMM Bar at the start of the game. Each trivia card has a single question related to the characters, world, or development of the Monkey Island games, and there are 100 total, with four answers to choose from. If you answer wrong, the card disappears and you must find it over again.

Trivia cards can be picked up just about anywhere. There are many spots around the islands in which they can spawn, including multiple areas on the same screen, but you'll only find a maximum of a single card on a screen at any given time. You can use the hotspot highlighter function(tab key) to make them more easy to see.

The trivia book is the same across multiple saves, so if you can't find any more cards, just reload a save file and start searching again.

One of the trivia cards, specifically the one asking about the location of Cobb Island, can't be answered correctly until you've found the location of Cogg Island, at which point that trivia card will change and be possible to answer correctly.

I've liked only some of the trivia and could answer a few without looking the info up. Overall, I think it could have had more interesting questions. Nonetheless, you can probably Google your way to all the proper answers, but there is also another way to this.

When you answer a trivia question incorrectly, the card disappears and can only be found again in a different playthrough. Also, saving the game before the answer and re-loading will not get the card back, as the information is saved in a database outside the save file. But it's still a file, so you can copy it before answering, then checking if you got the answer correct, if not, copying the file back to where the game accesses it from (%APPDATA%\Roaming\Terrible Toybox on Windows). For game to read the file, you need to re-launch the game, otherwise the file is not read (info is accessed from the memory).

Basically, it's a bit of a convoluted way, but I personally didn't feel like resorting to just searching for all the answers, neither did I want to replay the game multiple times, so this method worked for me for these occasions when I haven't had a clue about the question.

At one time you can find a maximum of 10 cards across the map, answer the questions, then exit the game for an hour, and repeat until you win.
