How to unlock the Near Death Experience achievement in Ring of Pain - Definitive Guide

The hardest part of this Achievement for me was reaching 5 Hp, not surviving.

If you have no idea how the game works and can't complete a run smoothly, wait until you have enough experience

Overall you have to build a solid build but at the same time lower the Hp (unless you are lucky enough to find the room that reduces the Hp, it depends too much on luck so I will not take it into consideration)

Useful items:

Camouflage: Cancels ranged attacks, that would be lethal given the HP
Plague: +3 Poison to target then double the poison; this destroys any enemy including bosses
Stone caller: Inflict 2 petrify to all enemy when take damage, this can kill the whole room if you have a high defense

If you have completed a Run without discarding items, you can use the Backpack. The Backpack allows you to use the Frozen Tiara with a full build, this means killing anything as long as the speed is over 21.

In short, it is not that difficult if you are familiar with the game, it is just a matter of patience and attempts

I don't think one of the endings is better than the other, it all depends on what items you have

Well, I was able to finish the game with Final Form and pop this, but folks below me weren't so lucky, so I guess, don't do that anymore. :( For what it's worth, I did the light ending, which does have that shadow room before the end for plot, whereas Owl has no extra room, so maybe it only works on Light endings?

I had attempted to do a tiara run for this about 25 times, no luck. The ox-underwear run was eventually the one that got it, just don't take items that increase your hearts, look for the ones that decrease, and obviously fountain of life is a slam dunk to get in range.

Shazam: I just completed a run with 4 Max Hp, but then used the Final Form scroll (all stats plus 10) and ended the game with Max HP of 14. For me, the achievement did not unlock. Not sure if this got a quick fix since you unlocked it.

If it makes a difference, I was fighting the owl boss. I was hoping the achievement would unlock and show my 'non-final form' stats under the statistics page, but it shows the 14 HP and no achievement.

Fortunately, this achievement is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be originally.

The upgraded Wishful room (now allows you to sacrifice up to three items and keep stats) makes this game WAY easier. In addition to being able to easily boost stats, it makes it so items that rely on limited items (tiara, items that give +1 for each empty slot, etc) are still useful late in the game.

I managed to do this with the Hermit's Tiara, Misting Vessel and the Icebreaker, got very lucky with the boss fight since Owl didn't summon any ranged enemy.

induvielgamer, how did you damage owl using this method/items? I didn't think you could freeze him

Goldacious, no, you can't freeze owl, but you can run away indefinitely thanks to the vessel, while killing enemies along the way so owl summons more, some of those summoned enemies will be roaming firebeads, wich you should manipulate so they damage owl, stunning him, as long as you have enough attack to kill shackles in time there shouldn't be any problem.

Thanks induvielgamer, I got it first try using this method! I had plenty of close calls using some of the items suggested above (mostly with the ox-underwear combo) but it was tiara on owl combined with firebeads that finally got it for me.

I had some good luck, so managed to get a backpack which allowed me to add a freeze spell for emergencies and also the fire eater mask to lower hp. I also got the fountain of life shrine to bring hp all the way down. Finally, I replaced ice breaker with the screamer which made it easier to chip away at owl and also to time firebead detonations.

What I initally did was focus on getting stronger without trying to reduce my health counter. This way I could keep the desired items even if they increased health.

Then in one of the final floors (the special floor called "Ravaged") I opened a blue chest and obtained the Insatiable mask. Now with each kill I lost one health and added 1 point to my highest skill, which was attack. I had around 20 health when I fought owl. I managed to reduce it to 5 by defeating enemies and was lucky enough that there was a purple chest with the Sculptor mask.

Difficult part is finding a blue chest in the later floor that spawns the insatiable mask and that you can replace it on time before you run out of health.

P. S The insatiable mask has a +2 health stat. Watch out that you do not switch to a mask that has -3 health or more because it will kill you instantaneously.

Those are all great suggestions - I will add another that I had to resort to. I was able to roll up a gem "Slippery" - Every 4 successful Stealth attempts +1 speed and -1 max health.

I used the LIGHT ending because there are so many health potions. Since I didn't have Camouflage or Backpack or Tiara - I just had stats up in the 40-50s. I wiped out all the "bosses" each round and then tried to find the creature that would only cause 1 point of damage per failed stealth attempt. I just kept going back and forth with my 20% stealth chance until my health was low - drink a potion and keep narrowing it down.

I reach the "Vision" boss with 16 HP and saved a Spikey-boy until I could whittle my way to 5 HP. Took way too long, but when you are desperate after the primary plans fall through - this is another approach.

A couple items that were very helpful in my successful run in the
were void portal, momentum, phase fiend and icy touch. But I think most of these will really only be good in the

With the Multiclass update, there's now a way easier method of getting this achievement, thanks to a new item.
With the item Soul Stitch, if you die, you ressurect with 5 * the number of Soul Kin items equipped, so if you die with only one Soul Kin item, you ressurect with 5 max health.
All you'd need to do is get Soul Stitch, purposely die before dealing the final hit, and you are done.

The Soul Stitch item is unlocked by completing the achievement All Natural.

Surprisingly not the most frustrating achievement but definitely requires you to be very familiar with moving around to avoid triggering enemy attacks.

The method I used was equipping the inverted candle, requires unlocking the Diamond Spoon.

For stats I made sure to have enough strength to one or two shot most things early on. I generally tried to pump clarity first and defense second. I generally let my special effects and spell books take care of high defense enemies. The purple poison spell book is best for that.

Ignore speed. The starting item for inverted candle literally guarantees that you will always go first, with low speed.

Here's a list of items to look for early.

Soul stealer - godly for rerolls

Wading rags - Intimidate for poisons is worth keeping forever. An enemy with just 3 poison does 6 damage and will kill you. Venom Guard is a close second.

Heat Shield - null early exploders.

Misting Vessel - clarity and safe movement.

Anti-pierce items are huge. Even -1 will save your life.

Doll heads can accidentally sabotage you. They increase the enemy count but it seems like the extra enemies can be stronger ones.

Entangle stops movement but and keeps enemies from doing full damage. Entangled enemies only deal piercing damage to you, so in entangle spell book and one anti-pierce item make you feel like a 5 HP tank.

For the general tips I will say the most important thing is to take time and check your movement before you do it. Clearing out chasers is first priority.

Do not be afraid to jump to the next floor or skip the bonus rooms. Even if you haven't gained anything from the current floor.

Something to keep in mind is that if you quit to the main menu then continue, you will start the floor over. Randomness is mostly seeded (predetermined), so if you do the exact same thing every time you get the exact same result.

Loading twice on one floor will spawn a passive but deadly wall. Sometimes this can be helpful since it can block chasing enemies on your left side, so doing this on purpose can be a good idea.

For stat points, get enough attack to one shot most things. Anytime you have the chance try to increase your clarity. Having a bunch of souls to reroll for ideal items in mid-game is very important.

At the start you basically want to clear the first few floors and see what kind of loot you get, resetting if it's not helpful. Ambush rooms are ideal since they can drop blues and purples as early as floor 2. Wishing wells too, to stack your stats early, throw the spoon in ASAP.

Building up a good stash of +HP commons is important. Things like the glass shield will help you survive early and also give you enough health to equip any -HP items for more build flexibility.

I stopped raising my health at about 20 to 30 points. Perhaps 5-10 health was from stat points and the rest from equipment. This should give you plenty of room to make a decent build.

By floor 10 you should plan ahead and swap out +HP commons and blues for -HP purples and golds. With high clarity you should be able to access more cursed stat boosts and get more -HP and have no issue.
