How to unlock the Paying Respects achievement in Rise of the Tomb Raider - Definitive Guide

After making significant progress through the main story and completing the Flooded Archives chapter, your goal will be to proceed to the observatory at the top of hill near the waterfall in the Geothermal Valley.

Just a bit down hill from the base camp at the top of the hill, off to the right hand side (if ascending), you'll see a small group of people sitting next to a tombstone. Walk up to them for the achievement to unlock.

You can replay Flooded Archives in Expeditions if you missed this opportunity.

I went to the observatory instead of down the path, but instead of replaying the Flooded Archives, I fast traveled back to Geothermal Valley and went to that spot. There weren't people there but when Lara got close enough to the tombstone, the achievement popped!

I missed the actual group of people there too, progressed as far as getting the Broad Head Arrows, then made my way back and got the achievement from just standing by the grave stone. So it is possible for at least a little while after missing it.

I went back to the location I saw the NPC's before. Even though the NPC's were gone, I just walked up to the gravestone and the achievement still unlocked. Didn't have to replay anything. Same as Lyco499 had.

I found that when I replayed this, because I missed it the first time, I wasn't able to get the achievement as there weren't any people nor a headstone.

I had to load up chapter replay for the tombstone or any people to be there.

Neither The people or the tombstone exist after completing the game and trying to find them in free roam mode. Replaying the Flooded Archives mission using Expeditions works. At the end of the level when you reach the waterfall, turn around and follow the path to the location found in the vid. Achievement unlocked 😀

Chapter: Flooded Archives (Story/Expeditions Mode)

After Story Strategy

Select Expeditions - Chapter Replay Mode - Flooded Archives Level - Tomb Raider Difficulty and start. Unfortunately you have to replay the entire level (10-15 minutes). At the end you come back to the Geothermal Valley. Do not go to the stairs or you will trigger the end of the level! Go to the Funeral location (Tombstone) and the achievement unlocks.

Contrary to some of the other solutions here, you do not have to replay the entire Flooded Archives mission if you missed this one the first time around, nor do you have to wait until you unlock the path to Kitezh (the achievement The Road Less Travelled).

All you need is to be able to fast travel to the Ridgeline base camp in Geothermal Valley.

Note: If you exited Flooded Archives and went straight to the observatory, missing this achievement, you will be transported to the Soviet Installation's Copper Mill Bridge base camp for the next chapter. You cannot fast travel from this base camp, but just make your way to either of the base camps Sheltered Ridge or Communications Tower, which are very close by, and you'll be able to fast travel.

The tombstone is located right below the ramp you use to swan dive to unlock No Guts, No Glory:

Here's the location of the tombstone:

There will be no funeral ceremony, but you will still unlock the achievement.

You can unlock this achievement after the Flooded Archives, and before the end game.

After you have unlocked the path to Kitezh (also an achievement)

Rise of the Tomb RaiderSecret AchievementThe Secret Achievement achievement in Rise of the Tomb Raider worth 19 pointsContinue playing to unlock this secret achievement

you can turn around run down the hill and take the first left. Here you will find the tombstone and the achievement will pop. Even though there are no people there.

After your trip to the hidden Library and the path to Kitej unveils, head from the fire near the observatory to the village. On your left on a clearance up the cliff, you will see a group of villagers gathered. Walk in and stay still until the words for teh funerals are said.

After passing through the Flooded Archives region in your main playthrough of the game, you'll return to the Geothermal Valley and have to climb a hill towards an observatory. As you do so, look out for a group of people just away from the main path and before the Ridgeline base camp - this will be the funeral in question. Just approach the group and the achievement should unlock.

If you miss this in the course of your main playthrough of the game, you can use Chapter Replay Elite in Expeditions Mode to replay the "Flooded Archives" chapter for another opportunity to unlock this achievement. Alternatively, visiting the funeral location in your main playthrough, even after the gathering has dispersed, should still unlock the achievement.

The funeral takes place in the chapter "Flooded Archives", which can be replayed via Expeditions mode if you missed this opportunity. At the very end of the chapter, after returning from the Flooded Archives to the Geothermal Valley, the story waypoints lead you up a hill to the observatory. Now wait till you reach the campfire/base camp called "Ridgeline". When standing at that campfire go a few meters down the hill and there’s a little plateau/grassy area on the side of the path. There are people gathering for a funeral. Stand near them and the trophy unlocks.

Attention: Don't go to the mission objective near the campfire, because doing so will end the mission and you will have to replay it all over again. If you miss it on your story playthrough and notice right away, you can still come back at the start of the next chapter (where you get the broadhead climbing arrows). The gravestone stays for a little while longer but it disappears eventually.
