How to unlock the Quick and Painless achievement in Rise of the Tomb Raider - Definitive Guide
- Anatomical Knowledge (Hunter skill tree) - Is automatically received after completing the Catacomb of Sacred Knowledge optional tomb located in the Geothermal Valley.
Now this is technically all you need to find the heart, but if you want an automatic heart shot every time you find a deer get these 3 next perks as well.
- Double Shot (Hunter skill tree) - First one in the second row.
- Triple Shot (Hunter skill tree) - First one in the third row.
- True Shot (Hunter skill tree) - Second one in the third row.
Now the two you really want is the one from the optional Tomb and True Shot (but to get True Shot you first need Double and Triple Shot).
Now that you have those skills just find some deer, best places to find some are in the Siberian Wilderness, Soviet Installation, and Geothermal Valley. Now once you find a deer just draw your arrow with now you just need to hover over the deers body until you see a RED DIAMOND appear (which registers as a automatic headshot on humanoid enemies, but a heartshot on deer. Then fire, this will automatically give you a heart shot even if the deer is running away from you. 15 kills and the cheevo is yours.
His method: "An easy way to find deer is in the mission research base. Use the mode score attack, choose research base and use the card tomb raider which gives you every skill if you have it.
A deer spawns at the start of this mission to the right. Kill the deer and reload checkpoint until you have the achievement"
My version:
1. Load up the mode Elite Chapter Replay. You won't need the Tomb Raider card, and you'll still have all of your skills and weapon upgrades. I'm tackling this after I've completed the main story, so my gear is as closed to maxed out as possible.
2. The deer takes a second to spawn behind the third tree on your right. DO NOT MOVE. If you move, you spook the deer, and acquiring the diamond on the moving target is nigh impossible. Instead, pop survival instinct and wait for it to show up, you'll only see it's head and neck areas.
3. 80% of the time, the deer will stand in place, moving it's head back and forth, which won't create the diamond since you can't see it's chest. If this happens, I recommend that you draw your bow and zoom, acquiring the red crosshairs, and slightly move so as to spook the deer. It'll freeze for a moment, full body in view, and that should allow you to acquire your diamond shot. If it takes off and you haven't acquired your diamond, restart the checkpoint. Pursuing the deer over the ridge prompts the combat scenario with the Trinity soldiers, and the deer despawns.
4. Occasionally, the deer will start to graze out to it's left, right into your field of view. If that happens, take the free heart shot. Be patient in all attempts, as rushing through this will cause you to sit in this checkpoint just building frustration. Luckily the reload checkpoint option is quick.
5. You can trigger the deer to graze with different levels of success. I've shot arrows close to the deer to no avail, and fired a fire arrow into the pathway ahead of the deer, which either causes it to not notice, to track it with it's head, or to run. Occasionally, it'll start to graze as seen in tip 4. Warning: Firing the fire arrow will prompt the combat event to trigger, so you'll only have about fifteen seconds to see if the deer will graze or not. If not, it'll run, prompting a reset.
EDIT: Forkbomb says: "You can switch your stance/view by pressing the left thumbstick in whilst aiming with the bow. This allows you to acquire the red diamond immediately after every checkpoint reload.", and it has been confirmed to work! Cheers Forkbomb!
Any questions or concerns, drop me a line in the comment below, and toss me those thumbs (preferably up). If it calls for it, I will record a video demonstrating an effective way to do this.
Deer can be found in the Siberian Wilderness, Soviet Installation and Geothermal Valley regions. You're unlikely to unlock this naturally so will need to farm this to some extent. Note that you won't always find deer when visiting each location (I believe that they'll only appear in certain weather conditions), so if you don't, just fast travel to one of the other locations and return later - you should find deer before too long.
There are two specific skills that you'll want to learn before going after this achievement - "Anatomical Knowledge" will show an indicator of animals' hearts when you use Survival Instincts and "True Shot" will automatically target animals' hearts when you zoomed in and aiming at them with your bow.

To make this easier you should first get the two Hunter skills "Anatomical Knowledge" (unlocked by completing the Challenge Tomb "Catacomb of Sacred Knowledge" in the Geothermal Valley) and "True Shot" (you must buy the double shot & triple shot skills). This will highlight and automatically target a deer's heart when using survival instinct and aiming the bow. You can find deer in 3 regions: Siberian Wilderness, Soviet Installation and Geothermal Valley and their possible spawn locations are marked on the map via a deer-symbol but they don't always spawn so just fast travel around until you find some and repeat.
But! It is on this deer that you can get a trophy in 10-15 minutes. You need to stop at a moment when the deer is not yet moving, carefully select a shooting point and calmly take him down. Then we choose to return to the control point, and it is right in this place, and repeat 15 times. And you don’t need to rush around other locations and run around looking for it.
The most important feature is that you must select the mode - restart the chapter at the “elite” level, otherwise even if you shoot hundreds of deer, the trophy will not fall out!
