Really easy but was embarrassingly missed by me until after about the 3rd boss. Make sure to go into your menu and go over to the accessory tab and equip one of the gear you either buy or get from a boss. Hope this helps a bit.

idk if I earned this minutes into the game but all I did was hit menu button and I had a virtual pet. equipped it for the pop right away!
