How to unlock the Help a Friend achievement in Road 96 - Definitive Guide

After you get off the chopper sidecart at a gas station you can see Zoe handcuffed to a policevan.

1. Talk to Zoe and agree to help her.
2. Go around the left side of the Station into a shed with a red political poster on it. Take the hose and the red oil canister that is also sitting around outside of the shed.
3. Go back to the policecar and extract oil from it.
4. Buy matches from the gas station.
5. Go back to where the shed was there is a large pile of garbage that you can set on fire, do so.
6. Once the little cutscene is over run directly around the other side of the gas station (opposite side from where the cops are approaching you).
7. Take the keys off the table the cops were sitting at.
8. Go to the van and open the drivers door, take the keys.
9. After you uncuff Zoe you get a cutscene getting caught but you will still get the achievement.

The above solution probably works but both options for the Antenna were red for me so i couldnt follow that one.

if you just missed it and didnt leave the area quit the game and restart, if you already left you might get the same scenario again if not you will get it in new game plus mode for sure

Also, I wanted to note that I did the requirements for this on my original playthrough, but the achievement failed to unlock. My guess is this achievement glitched somehow due to Quick Resume, but I am not sure. I made sure to kill the game at the start of the scene for my second try and it worked fine.

Not true that this will always appear in Chapter 3. For some playthroughs on NG+ it won't appear until Chapter 4.

This didn't appear for me in Chapter 3 even in my first playthrough. Was Chapter 4 for me, literally the first scene

Indeed, seems quick resume glitches achievements. I resumed, freed Zoe, no achievement.
Quickly closed the game, restarted, freed Zoe and achievo pops.

I want to add the information that chapter select isn't available any more once you reached the end of the game. I missed this one and thought I cold just play the episode (actually 5 in my case) after I finished the game again. Only option was to start a New game after the credits.

So if you have only $1 and no hacking skills you can't get this.

I started with no money at all. I found a Scratch Card within the gas station that gave me $1, as well as a coin near the gas pumps for another $3, that gave me enough for the matches.

If you miss this on the first go, just do it in New Game+. At some point in Episode 3 you will get to the Gas Station with Zoe in handcuffs and can attempt this again. It's random the order of the scenes in the episode, but that scene will always be part of Episode 3 no matter your choices.

If missed, this will require about 60-90 minutes of extra time spent in New Game+ due to the randomness and having to get to Ep 3.

At some point in your playthroughs, you will encounter Zoe in a car sequence which leads to this event happening, where she is captured by the police and they stop at a gas station at some point down the line.

For me, this occurred on the second teen play through and I didn’t get the gas station sequence until the third one. But note that the event itself is scripted, it may just happen in a different order.

Once you find Zoe handcuffed to the police car, speak to her and free her. You start this by going around the left side of the gas station. You can either:

— Break the antenna tower, you need specific skills to do so (I did not have these at the time).

— Commit arson by the antenna tower. Get a hose and a empty gas tank from the rear of the gas station. Go back to the police vehicle and drain the fuel from it. Go into the gas station and buy a box of matches for $2. Go the back left of the gas station to ignite a fire.

Once you’ve done either of these two, DO NOT run back from the way you came as the cops head that way. Instead, go the other way where the cops initially were. On the table where the cops were sat, will be a set of keys. Pick them up and head for the police car, open up the police car and pick up the handcuff keys, then free Zoe.

The achievement will unlock after this.

So you can miss this one. I did. On the encounter where you find Zoe handcuffed to the outside of the cop van if you set off the radio antenna and then go around the right side of the gas station, the cops will find you before you get a chance to get the key from the picnic table and undo the cuffs on Zoe.

So after you set off the Radio Antenna, go around the left, grab the key from the table and then use the key on Zoe to unlock the achievement.

If you accidentally run the wrong way and fail, you can immediately dashboard and then reboot the game. You'll start back at the beginning of the scene. Worked for me anyway headspin

Episode 3- chapter Fire starter. Talk to Zoe, go to the back, in the small room get a telephone box key. Exit slightly right and open the telephone box and tear the wires. Circle the other way steal cop keys from the table, go to Zoe and open the police car. Grab the handcuff keys and free Zoe.

MISSABLE

In the chapter "Fire Starter", you will have to free Zoe that has been captured by the police, without being caught. To do so, you have to distract the two policemen and steal their keys, and you can achieve this in two different ways, based on the abilities you have:
  1. Tear or Hack the telephone tower (shorter but requires "Omen Vitality!" or "Hacking")
    • Pick the "Telephone Box Key" from the metal shed in the back of the area (not needed if you also have the "Lockpicking" ability).
    • Use the key or the "Lockpicking" ability to open the yellow box at the base of the telephone tower.
    • Choose "Tear" or "Hack" based on which ability you have (or prefer to use).
  2. Start a fire (longer but requires no abilities)
    • Buy the matches from the store for $2 (there is money in front of the entrance outside on the ground if needed).
    • Pick up the empty gas can located to the left of the store.
    • Pick up the simple hose from the metal shed in the back of the area.
    • Siphon the gas from the police van where Zoe is handcuffed.
    • Reach the yellow box at the base of the telephone tower and look for a cardboard box towards the left.
    • Choose "Light Fire".
No matter which option you choose, the police will be distracted, and here comes the difficult part. Keep circling behind the shop to avoid the cops seeing you, then grab the keys from the table they were sitting on before (the one on the right, near the shop), run for the van, open the door next to Zoe, grab the handcuff keys inside and free Zoe.

If you come too close to the cops, or if you don't go back around the shop, they will see you and you will have to quickly quit to main menu and restart the chapter to avoid missing the trophy.

MISSABLE

The easiest way if you dont have the correct abilities is to start by speaking with Zoe and agree to help her escape. Now go around the back of the station to find a hose and a gas can, and then purchase matches ($2) from the owner. Head back to the van and syphon the gas and head other to the rubbish to the left of the gas station and set fire to it. 

Now the police will come investigate. Head around the back of the station and grab the keys from the table. Head to the driverside of the van and grab the cuff keys and help unlock Zoe.

It is scripted to get caught but you should unlock the achievement when you turn to face the police.
