How to unlock the Wave 100 achievement in Robotron 2084 - Definitive Guide

This is a written guide for the Wave 100 achievement. There are videos out there of people getting that far but a written guide will tell you many things to keep in mind that a video can't.

Before we start, I want to take a moment to thank my friend SCOTTLAND1986 for all the insight and tips he's given me. Parts of this guide wouldn't exist without his help.

The following two pointers are imperative to keep in mind, so read them carefully.

1. This game is extremely hard. This is not your average game at all. Getting 200/200 in Robotron is way, way harder than getting 200 in, say, Ikaruga or Super Meat Boy.

2. There is no quick way to get to Wave 100. Practice and dedication will be required and there are no shortcuts, aside from cheating. Don't go down that road. Real men do it legit!
Thus, this guide will not automatically make you play better. What it will do, is to create the right mindset for you, so you know what to expect and how your gameplay will improve as you continue to practise.

Alright, let's begin:

Achievement-wise there are three milestones to this game. Wave 10, 30 and 100. First I'll give you some useful tips for playing the game and after that there will be a section where I'll explain the milestones in greater detail.

Tip-section:

On Brain Waves 5, 25, 45, 65 and 85 there will always be one boy(Mikey) and many women(Moms). If you finished the previous wave with no humans left on the screen, the Brains will go after Mikey, and until they get him or you pick him up they'll not touch any of the Moms on the screen. Thus, you'll want to shoot as many Brains as you possibly can, protecting Mikey at the same time. When all Brains are gone, feel free to pick up the remaining humans in any order you see fit. Leave an Enforcer to succeed with this as a Grunt will, in most cases, get too fast for you.
This is called the 'Mikey trick'. It won't always work as sometimes he will spawn on a Brain or very close to a group of Brains.
If you're new to the game I highly recommend not starting over whenever you don't get it to work on Wave 5. You'll benefit far more from continuing to play and getting familiar with the game. Even when you're not new to the game anymore, you'll notice that even if you didn't succeed with the 'Mikey Trick' on Wave 5 you can still have a great game, building up alot of lives as you press on.

When it comes to how to deal with the enemies, there is no strategy that always seems to work for certain waves.
Sometimes you'll move close to the walls and sometimes you'll be out in the open. There is no right place to always hang around in to avoid all the dangers.
The Quarks and Spheroids are very important to get rid of as fast as possible. But you can't make it a point to always get rid of every single Spheroid and Quark. They'll pretty much always manage to spawn a few Tanks and Enforcers. Try your best to minimize that number.
One tip I see from some other players out there is to focus on shooting the Tanks and Quarks on the Tank Waves and ignore the humans.
I strongly disagree with that. One of the most important aspects of playing this game well is to grab as many humans as you possibly can. Not only will it make you better at the game but it will also give you many extra lives.
No human is worth dying for though, since it's at most worth 5,000 points.

Now we'll discuss movement and shooting. For movement you can use the d-pad or the left stick. It's a personal preference and you can become really good at the game regardless of what you choose.
For shooting, you can use the A,B,X,Y buttons or the right stick. Again, choose what feels comfortable for you. Shooting plays a central role in this game and it will serve as your shield alot of the time.

The three milestone achievements:

Wave 10- This will feel hard in the beginning. If you don't immediately give up though, this one will come with just a little bit of practice.

Wave 30- This is where most people give up. It'll feel daunting at first. You now need to increase the amount of practice you're putting in. Playing one or two games every other day is not going to get you to Wave 30 anytime soon.
I'd recommend playing for at least 1 hour every day. The more the better, and 1 hour is what I'd call an absolute minimum.
If you can't do it every day, don't fret. Missing one day is not a big deal but see to it that you get consistency in your training. Robotron is like sports. You need to warm up before you start. You warm up by just playing the game(duh!).
That's why playing just one or two games isn't really what I'd call a good practice session.
Don't expect to get this achievement in one day. If you practise alot you could potentially get it in 3 days or so, but it's more realistic to expect it to take a week or more.

Wave 100- Ok, now here's the big one. Getting to Wave 100 is much, MUCH harder than getting to Wave 30. This is where the men are separated from the boys so to speak.
As you've probably noticed by now; getting to Wave 30 once doesn't mean you'll get to Wave 30 all the time or even most of the time. This is normal. This leads us into how progression works in this game.
To improve further, it's imperative that you keep practising the way I told you about above. In Robotron you won't feel that you're improving constantly even if you practise alot. In other words you may not feel like you're playing better now than, say, 5 days ago. This is also normal. You'll have MANY bad runs mixed in with average games. Every now and then you'll begin playing as if on fire and possibly set a new personal record.
If you feel like you're not in the zone at all I'd recommend taking a short break so as not to continue feeling like you're bashing your head against a wall.
With that said; if you continue to practise, your overall skill will increase. It just doesn't show immediately. You'll have to deal with the constant ups and downs as that's just how the game works.
You WILL be frustrated at times. If you don't ever get frustrated while playing this game something must be wrong with you;)
If you've never played Robotron before in any of its iterations expect it to take at the very least 3 months to get to Wave 100. Like I said before, this achievement is WAY harder than any other you've seen.
Don't worry about other players having unlock dates for Wave 100 close to the Wave 30 achievement. It's not the first time for them or they've practised on a different profile. In reality it really will take you months to do it from scratch.
Personally I played many other games at the same time so don't feel like you have to limit yourself to only playing Robotron all the time.
If you take a break from the game for a week or two, or even a month, you won't really lose any skill. You might feel a little rusty coming back but after just an hour or so you'll be back to your old self.

Ok, with all this talk I'm sure it might seem daunting. I won't lie to you; it is. I can, however, guarantee you that the feeling you'll get from unlocking this achievement will be totally worth it! Bragging rights are included!

Here's a video of me getting to Wave 100:

Profile swapping, lagging up a VS game or just straight out hacking the achievement.

How well does this game compare with Geometry Wars?

By SnelleSjonnie on 27 Mar 2011 09:35
It's similar in that it is a twitchy twin stick shooter but the similarities end there. It's much harder to get 200/200 in this game than Geometry Wars.
Gameplay-wise, in Robotron your shots are much smaller and you have to be more accurate when playing. You also cannot 'spray' your bullets like in GW.
I'm sure you remember the feeling of being overwhelmed when playing GW. This game is no different in that regard.

So, what is the purpose of the list of wave 100 people? Wouldn't it unfairly label people cheaters if you don't have them on your list? Just wondering the logic of it since this is the place for a solution...

I can understand the feeling you have about the logic of having a list like this in the solution.
Everyone who's not familiar with this game will think that alot of peope have a high score and the Wave 100 achievement. That creates an image of this game being easier than it is in reality.
If people really want to give Wave 100 a shot they should know what they're getting themselves into. It will not be easy.
With the list in mind, you won't feel as if loads of people have done it and it creates the correct mind set for you when working on it.
Furthermore, those who have earned it legit really deserve to have their name posted. Considering the ratio of 'legit people/cheaters' is ridiculous I felt this was necessary.

Oh, and this list is 100% correct and thus if you're not on this list you're not legit. No one is unfairly labeled as a cheater here.

Congrats on Wave 10! And no, 2+ hours to get to Wave 10 is not really bad. Don't worry about it. One thing that could help you mentally is to not focus on the big picture all at once. For instance, make it your goal to reach Wave 20 next. If you get to Wave 14 and that is a new record, pat yourself on the back!

To answer the question in your second post; the people not on the list used external equipment to cheat. This doesn't necessarily mean they hacked/modded it but I won't go into detail about this here. Many of them haven't even reached Wave 30 legit. There's no way to exploit the game and ONLY the game to get to Wave 100.

When you change the settings you can't unlock any achievements, period. The leaderboard glitch lets you post your scores on the leaderboard even though you played that game with changed settings, nothing more.

And there are ways of gaining proof for most people. Such as playing them in versus.... But some guys don't really play anymore or don't respond to messages, so that doesn't always work.

I'm curious SPECIFICALLY the methods which you used to discover most of those people cheated the leaderboards as well...What exactly do you mean common sense and investigating? Versus I get ... but what else?

Alright, I won't write down every single thing in detail but I'll make a broad sweep over some things that can be checked primarily in no specific order:

1. Does your score appear on the leaderboard whatsoever?

2. Does your score appear on the weekly leaderboards for months and does your highest weekly score increase as the weeks go on?

3. Is the achievement order weird?

4. A couple versus games will remove any doubt whatsoever. The cheaters will put up an excuse to not play versus OR they'll try to account trade and let someone else play versus for them. I won't fall for any of those things.

@Joustery: TA didn't like the list and thought that there was no way to tell who was legit and who wasn't, so it was censored even though it's correct.
I've got the same guide on x360a too and they didn't feel the need to censor the guide there. And you're on the list.

They still have a few codes left on Ebay but it seems to be getting rarer and rarer these days. Not surprisingly, the rarity of the codes makes the price increase and the cheapest price out of the two sellers is now $30.
I would buy this masterpiece of a game for that price but there are loads of people who wouldn't think this game is worth that much.
This is truly a game where you get back what you put in. Extremely steep learning curve but very rewarding when you start to get good at it.

A question for you, Grim-

I have an upright arcade version of this game (why I got it on the 360 in the first place). My brother (he is much better at Robotron than I am) and I play on this arcade machine and have often surpassed level 100. I was thinking about finishing this game on the 360.

My question is, the biggest problem I have with this game on the 360 is the controls. Maybe I am just too used to the original arcade joysticks. Would pulling the control panel off my arcade machine, taking a worn-out 360 controller and wiring it to the control panel of the arcade game (essentially creating a custom 360 controller) classify as "cheating"?

I don't classify myself as a cheater, so I was just curious. Thanks!

@Hyyr: There's one guy who got to wave 100 in the 360 version who used to play the Arcade version alot and was able to play it indefinitely at default difficulty. IIRC it took a month or so for him to reach wave 100 on the 360.

Now, from what I've heard,(I've never played the Arcade version) the 360 version at default difficulty is harder than the highest Arcade difficulty. I guess they made this port for the truly hardcore only lol.

About using that control method; hmmmm......well, if you got to wave 100 with the arcade controls, then no I wouldn't call you a cheater. Question is though, does the 360 method of playing the game make it harder in general? I can't answer this but if you're used to those controls then by all means, go ahead and use them.

Now I'm gonna bombard you with some questions so get ready;) What's you and your brother's highest wave and score? What difficulties do you play on? Also, is there any chance you could get your brother to play the 360 version with the Arcade controls just to see how far he can get? That would be interesting indeed since then we could truly see the difference in difficulty between the two versions.

@Grim: Thanks for the response! My brother (GT: Ryys) and I both have gotten past wave 100 on the arcade default settings, though my brother has an "infinite" score- rolled over. I have not done that.

The controls are such a big deal because we were sooo used to the arcade Robotron, and arcade Robotron is played with the wrists, not the thumbs. To somebody who never played the arcade original, this would most likely not be a problem. The 360 controls certainly seems more difficult to me.

The 360 version of the game certainly seems to be more difficult than the arcade "default" setting, not sure about hard though. We both bought the game expecting it to be rather an easy win (!!!) but blamed the unorthodox (thumb sticks) controls for our lack of performance. With my custom controller, the truth will be known. I will let you know what we find about the difference between the two versions.

Expect to see us soon on the leaderboards, I am now determined to do this and I will be making my custom controller very soon. I want completion on this game!

On here the difference between the Arcade version and the 360 version becomes clear:

http://www.robotron2084guidebook.com/?page_id=28

So even the Arcade difficulty 10 is harder than difficulty 1 on the 360. I'm sure you guys can do it though. Experience with the Acade version will definitely benefit you.

It certainly is rare to find codes these days, and at 30$.... it's a shame, considering what a classic, fun, challenging arcade game it is. It would be nice to have some new players. Maybe someday there will be a re-release, but considering Midway Arcade Origins was recently released, I doubt it will happen.

Yeah, this is by far my favorite XBLA game. I wonder if the MAO version has the same difficulty scale as the Arcade version. If so, we would easily be able to play indefinitely on that version's default settings.....if the game allows shooting with the right stick and movment with the d-pad.

I'm a little fuzzy on how someone could cheat on this game. Are you talking about someone else playing it for them? Or do you mean the lowest of the low - the people that swap game saves?

Note: I've deleted the legit list on xbox360achievements.org. I haven't played any games in 4 months, so due to not being active with games anymore I can't be bothered keeping the list updated should someone else get to wave 100. Therefore it had to go.

Alright, let's begin:

Achievement-wise there are three milestones to this game. Wave 10, 30 and 100. First I'll give you some useful tips for playing the game and after that there will be a section where I'll explain the milestones in greater detail.

I can only hope to make it to this club! Your dedication to getting this achievement will drive me a long while, and your dedication in this guide will hopefully help my reach this epic milestone. Thanks Grim!

Sly Toad, it's not about being a legend, it's about practising and sticking to it. You can do it too. Great guide, and it's good to see there's a list made again.

Let's just say it's a combination of common sense and investigating.

Profile swapping, lagging up a VS game or just straight out hacking the achievement.

Note: I've deleted the legit list on xbox360achievements.org. I haven't played any games in 4 months, so due to not being active with games anymore I can't be bothered keeping the list updated should someone else get to wave 100. Therefore it had to go.

I now have 403 hours invested in this. I have made it to wave 30 20 times. I might crack wave 100 in 20-35 hours. Trying to win this is on par with trying to win a gold medal in the Olympics.
