How to unlock the Dave Grohl Band achievement in Rock Band 3 - Definitive Guide

This achievement can be unlocked on any difficulty with any instrument. Songs from Rock Band, Rock Band 2, Rock Band 3, or LEGO Rock Band do not work. There have been reports of it not unlocking, so I would recommend trying for it via the Band Challenges menu just to be safe (In the Career -> Goals menu).

Forcing people to buy dlc to unlock an achievement is just wrong.

Although everyone has different song tastes, I listened to every Foo Fighters song on here and my favorite two are "Best of You" and "My Hero", which are the 2 I ended up downloading (to complement the 3 songs I had from disk dlc), in case anyone wants any recommendations.

I heard the Blitz songs work, seeing how they are more like a track pack & not an export.

RB just started adding tracks again, and there's another Foo Fighters track that should work for this achievement "Something From Nothing"

They're not too picky about what consists of a "Dave Grohl" song. Any DLC song of a band that Dave Grohl has ever been in (or even ever just recorded with) counts, even if he wasn't a member when the specific song was recorded. So far this includes any DLC by Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Tenacious D, Garbage, Queens of the Stone Age, and Them Crooked Vultures. Only DLC works (exports from Rock Band 1, Rock Band 2, and Lego Rock Band do NOT work, not do any of the on-disc songs from Rock Band 3).

Go under CAREER / MY GOALS, then select ROCK BAND / DOWNLOADED SONG GOALS, then hit "A". Move the cursor to DAVE GROHL BAND (2rd row, 2nd column) and hit "A" to "Play Goal".

You will be taken to a quickplay-like song selection screen which will be pre-filtered to include ONLY the songs that you already own that will fulfill the achievement.

If you don't see the option there, then that's an indication that you don't have at least 5 DLC tracks with bands that have had Dave Grohl in them. (It appears that they must be ordinary DLC, too. The exports from RB1/RB2 don't count.)

You can also see your progress toward it.
(This works similarly for the other Goals on this same page--there are 10 here that are also XBL achievments.)

RB3 will auto detect if you have got 5 Dave Grohl tracks downloaded... if so you will see the option to play the goal, if you do not have 5 tracks of Grohls downloaded you will not see the option to play it, its that simple.

I did not have Dave Grohl listed when i first looked... in my goals...it turns out i did not have 5 tracks DOWNLOADED with Grohl in them... so i downloaded The perfect drug and Come as you are and NOW i can see the goal Dave Grohl listed in Downloaded song goals.

I have downloaded, Smells like teen spirit, School, Polly, Come as you are, The perfect drug... and now i can see the option to play 'Dave Grohl Band'.

MUST be 5 DOWNLOADED tracks.

When I go to downloaded song goals, only four appear. None of which are the Dave Grohl one. Any suggestions.

Are you online? Do you have any downloaded songs at all?
I'm not sure what exactly would cause the game to only show the "normal" 50 achievements.

I am online and when I go to achievements through the dashboard, 62 are listed. In addition, I have all Nirvana and Queens of the Stoneage songs downloaded. Oh well, thanks for trying to help. You get my +1.

Just beat ANY 5 downloaded songs from a band that Dave Grohl has played in before on any instrument.

Eligible bands:
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Tenacious D
Queens of the Stone Age
Nine Inch Nails
Them Crooked Vultures
Garbage

The songs don't have to even be songs he played on, songs from Nirvana's Bleach, and NIN and QOTSA songs he didn't even play on will work.

If you go to the goals page and click on the goal it will give you a list of eligible songs you have.

Note that these songs MUST be downloaded, songs from discs like RB1, RB2, and Lego will NOT WORK.
I believe The Perfect Drug from Track Pack Vol 2 will work, however.

The achievement has to be possible to achieve in the retail game without DLC, though.

This is a DLC achievement, so it doesn't need to be completed with the base game. RB3 shipped with 1250 points obtainable, some of which are DLC only.

Yeah, exactly what I said. But my question is do I need to get four other songs, or can I play Smells Like Teen Spirit over and over again?

No, they have to be five separate songs. Considering there's nearly 50 eligible tracks, it's not too bad

Can confirm that GAME imports don't work (songs imported from RB1, RB2, and Lego) however songs imported from the track packs do work, as the game still treats them as if they were DLC, so yes "The Perfect Drug" works whether you downloaded it directly or imported it from the track pack. (I actually got this achievement playing "The Perfect Drug" attempting to get The Perfect Drug achievement, not realizing that it needed to be drums only lol)

Most of the people are probably going to be interested is how much extra they'll have to spend on the DLC achievements. If you have the Metal Track Pack and Track Pack Volume 2 (AND you export them to your harddrive), you will have to spend 800/880 MSP to get all the DLC (160 for a Queen song, 160 for a Boston song, 320 for Dave Grohl songs & 160/240 for the Harmonix songs - one of the songs "Like a Fool" by Shaimus you may already have).

If you have the two aforementioned track packs: to meet the requirements for "Dave Grohl Band" you will need to buy two additional songs from the various artists listed in all the other solutions.

If you have the two packs you will get:
Queens of the Stone Age: 3's and 7's (Metal)
NIN - The Perfect Drug (Volume 2)
Garbage - Why Do you Love Me (Volume 2)

Follow Zechman's guide for how to get the achievement by playing "goals".

EDIT: Check out VegaDark541's comment (i.e., the 1st comment) for info on reducing the amount you have to spend even more if you have some other Track Packs. In his case, he had the Classic Rock Pack and so he didn't have to buy an additional Boston song. For this particular achievement (Dave Grohl Band), that information is irrelevant though as he pointed out.

Just want to add that songs can be from the same band. Personally, I played :

Why do you love me ? - Garbage
Breed - Nirvana
The Perfect Drug - NIN
Tribute - Tenacious D
The Metal - Tenacious D

Plus, the Garbage ad NIN ones came from the Rock Band Song pack Vol. 2, so it can be a good deal !

Again, only songs from the Rock Band Music Store and Rock Band Network count for this. Dave Grohl is the drummer for Nirvana, the guitar player and singer for Foo Fighters and has played with a host of other artists including Nine Inch Nails (see The Perfect Drug), Tenacious D, and Queens of the Stone Age. You can play any song by these artists on any instrument and any difficulty to unlock this.
