How to unlock the Mad Scientist achievement in Rocket League - Definitive Guide

This achievement can be unlocked either naturally by playing the rocket labs 3v3 online playlist, or in exhibition.

For a nice quick unlock, simply enter exhibition match and select the following;
Game Mode : Soccar
Arena(s) : Underpass, Utopia Retro, Double Goal, Cosmic, Pillars (any 3 of these 5 are fine).
Team Size : 1v1
Bot Difficulty : No Bots
Mutator Settings : Max Score = 1goal

Once in, score a quick goal for the win, select exit to main menu after the match and then select the next arena. The achievement should unlock within a few seconds of completing the 3rd match.

Important Note - 22/06/16
Some users are reporting problems unlocking this achievement. The game is failing to track progression towards the unlock under certain circumstances, yet is still ticking off the arenas as completed internally. This means some have played all 5 arenas yet only have 33% or 66%.

Advice for now would be to track your percentage after each match to make absolute certain it is progressing.

Since I have been unable to replicate the bug, I have no idea on a fix. Will update if that changes.

I've done this on every level and am stuck at 66%. I really hope this one doesn't glitch out on me.

For those that aren't getting it to unlock, make sure you are picking a map that has (rocket Labs) after the name. If it doesn't say that, it won't work.

Thanks Darq but I've done it on all 5 levels now and I can confirm they are the Rocket Lab levels. On top of that, the Right/Left Wing achievement is also glitched. I've won on both sides in hockey multiple times and no unlock. I even tried with a split screen partner and still nothing.

I'll make a quick note for now on the guide to at least warn people this is happening. I did try to replicate on an alt but it unlocked fine so I can't offer any tips on avoiding it. Until anyone can give a workaround or fix it's really the best I can do. Sorry it's buggy for some of you guys.

Same as Ya Big Goof, stuck at 66% with all 5 arenas played. Was able to unlock with an alt, so no idea what's going on.

Love it when developers fail at their programming related to achievements.

The devs did a great job with this game but it is tough for me to not get upset when you screw up something so basic.

Does the developer has a good history fixig any past bugs?

The Solution:

Here is how I fixed the problem for myself. Please note that solution is designed to allow you to keep your save file. The solution involves only temporarily deleting your save - you get it back from the cloud at the end:

1) First, make sure this is your Home Xbox (go to Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox).
2) Then, kill the Rocket League app/game.
3) Then, go to Settings > Network
4) Click Disconnect Wireless
5) Click Go Offline
6) Go to My Games & Apps, then Manage Rocket League and delete your save file.
7) Then launch Rocket League. It will launch you with a fresh save file.
8) While offline, with your fresh save file, repeat the solution writer's guide. Perform three quick 1v1 No Bot 1-goal matches in three different Rocket Labs arenas. To be safe I did matches in all 5 arenas.
9) Then, kill the Rocket League app/game
10) Go to Settings > Network
11) Click Go Online
12) Set up your Wifi network again.
13) Then launch Rocket League. It will sync your legitimate, older save from the cloud.
14) The achievement will then pop.

The cloud thing does work for getting the trackers done but it's got nothing to do with stand-by or closing games. I always close games and the console is never in stand-by over night; after the update patch the game simply didn't count every arena I have played (from start to end) while it did on a 2nd profile that played with me on split screen.

Thanks for the fix! My Left wing, Right wing glitched and that worked perfectly. Just to add to the final few steps, when it asks you which place to sync be sure to select the cloud save or you'll lose everything.

No gamer should have to do what OdadjianActual suggested in order to get an achievement to work. This is yet another buggy achievement and another mark against the Xbox One achievement system vs. the Xbox 360 achievement system.

I have played three rocket lab maps over and over online and the achievement tracker still shows NO progress.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. Mikaelninja deserves credit too for an alternate solution for people that game share.

Epsilon Factor - I think you may be a bit unfair. I agree with you that this solution should never be necessary. If the achievement being stuck in Done Unlocking! or a server side issue, then yes, it would be a mark against the Xbox One achievement system. But why is this Microsoft's fault? This is the developer failing to program their game properly.

OdadjianActual: I don't recall seeing all of these achievement problems on the 360, so Microsoft's decision to switch to this new system has to be at least part of the cause. That being said, MS perhaps could have done a better job at communicating to developers the potential pitfalls of the new achievement system. But ultimately, you're right. It is the developers of this game that should have tested and mitigated this achievement issue in the first place.

I hadn't played Rocket League since the Update came out for the new DLC as of 6/07/2016 I played my first game of the new DLC Used this guide for this particular Achievement played the 3 games 1v1 No Bots and used the 1st 3 maps of what the guide told me and the achievement Unlocked first time What I did which might or might not be different from what people have done is actually go back to main menu after playing 1 match and then pick the different map that way instead of going to settings while still in the match end state So each time a match ends go to main menu then pick a different map and start match and see if it makes a difference with the progress bar Like I said I played the 3 maps and Bleep Blop Achievement unlocked clap

I tried the 1v1 and the 2v2 exhibitions as described above on all 5 rocket lab maps before and after hard rebooting my xbox and the achievement app still shows NO progress toward the achievement!

The ONLY way I could get this achievement was to go offline and delete my local save, as OdadjianActual suggested. facepalm

I just simply deleted the save file locally, without disconnecting from the internet. Then loaded back up the game and followed the original guide. The tracker worked and unlocked right after the third map.

I did the same as RyanMpwnz. Just deleted local save. It synced when starting the game up too but after playing the 3 arenas as above it popped fine... So maybe try deleting save locally first - it could save some time.

I too got it to fix by simply deleting my local save. No reason to go through all the offline steps. It still took them a bit to register, not sure why...buy I just played each court twice and got it on the fourth court.

I just got this and I couldn't win a goal then quit, it wasn't showing any progress but for the one you always get in rumble. Just make an exhibition match 1v1, no bots, 1 goal to win, then win the match, let it conclude, exit to menu, pick a new arena then repeat for a total of 3 complete matches. It will pop on the third completions winners circle

HELLO!
I may have a solution for people not getting tracked. I played 2 matches and it tracked fine then stopped.
And I simply let the AI score in a 5th attempt. And it tracked. Don't lnow if it's really a solution

This solution to the bug is pretty out there but for those in a similar situation: I lost my old Xbox One, got a new one, downloaded RL, played one match in Underpass Exhibition (I had previously played all 5 on my old xbox), and it popped. If you've upgraded your Xbox since hitting the bug, try giving this one a quick go again.

For anyone who is still struggling with this achievement: close rocket league and go offline through settings > network settings, then delete the local data on your Xbox for rocket league, open rocket league and start 5 different exhibition maps for Soccar 1v1 beginner bots (select the max 1 goal mutator to save time) on cosmic, pillars, double goal, underpass and utopia retro (this is just in case some of the games do not work). After the 5th game, close rocket league and boot online the same way you booted offline previously. If the achievement has not popped yet, open rocket league and select to run through cloud play if it asks you to. Now you should get your achievement, this worked with me and my friend :)

Yeah. Rocket League has done this to me before where the game counts progress but the achievements don't. During the initial release I was unlocking items and the achievement counter wouldn't go up until I restarted the game, but it wouldn't retroactively count what I had unlocked while it was messing up. I'm not sure what causes it exactly, best I can tell, exiting the game at all (going to the home screen or going into stand by) messes it up. What sucks is I've now played EVERY rocket labs map and can't progress. I'm going to try putting my save on a flash drive deleting it and playing some of these maps... I'll repost if I have any success.

Okey, as I said before if you do not own the rocket league game you can not go offline and start up the rocket league game. I will add a way to OdadjianActual's guide so you who are sharing games wont have to buy it.

1. Go to "My games & apps" --> Manage game
2. Delete your console save NOT the cloude save.
3. Start upp Rocket League.
4. As soon as you see it starts syncing with your cloude save, dubble tap homebutton --> Settings --> Network --> Go offline. Just go offline do not cut your network.
5. Go back into the game to make sure it didnt quit it self. (If it synced your save i doesn't matter)
6. Go out from the game (DO NOT QUIT IT). Go to My games & Apps --> manage game --> delete your save again.
7. Press home button, now the big window should be the manage game window and under shuld the icon for rocket league be. Go down and press it. The game will restart but should still start completely with a totally new save and you wont get "make this xbox your home xbox to play this game offline"
8. Follow OdadjianActual's from step 8,9,10,11 skip 12 and just start the game.
9. When the game asks wich save you want to load console or cloud. Just wait for the achievements to pop then load your cloud save.

This worked for me for like 10 minutes ago. Would be awesome if someone could test it out and see if it works for them to. All cred goes to OdadjianActual for his guide. This is just an alternate solution if you dont own the games and share it with some friend.

This is my first guide ever, hope it works.

Alright I found a fix for this, and a possible cause.

Possible cause:

Life is too short for me to waste time trying to reproduce this theory. However, here are the steps I performed that lead to this issue:

1) Before going to work, I loaded up Rocket League and observed the main menu (the menu where your car is on the grass field and great music plays in the background). I didn't play Rocket League - all I did was load Rocket League and then turn off the console. I have Instant On enabled so it basically put Rocket League on standby.

2) 10 hours later I come home from work, turn on the Xbox, launch Netflix and eat some dinner while watching Orange Is The New Black.

3) After watching an episode, I then launched Rocket League. Rather than starting Rocket League from scratch, it "resumed" Rocket League for me. The whole day the game was on standby thanks to Instant On.

4) After launching Rocket League I immediately went to Exhibition to try the solution writer's guide. I did three very quick 1v1 No Bot 1-goal matches in three different Rocket Labs arenas. No achievement. And no progress on the tracker.

5) I then killed Rocket League and re-launched it. I played the same three Rocket Labs arenas again with quick 1v1 No Bot 1-goal matches. No tracker. I then chose a Rocket Labs arena that I didn't play - boom now my tracker is at 33%.

So I thought to myself:

a) Perhaps if you leave your game on standby, it messes with the game's ability to update the achievement tracker.

b) Killing the game and re-launching the game maybe fixes it - for future Rocket Labs arenas! It seems that for any Rocket Labs arenas you already played, it will never update in the tracker. Meaning the game has saved that you already played in those arenas and there is no further hope that the game will update the tracker for you for those specific arenas.

Next post will have the solution.

Edit: I found this article buried away on reddit. This method worked for me and fixed it once I was able to sync my cloud save. For anyone still struggling, follow this method. Happy to help anyone too if they need. :)

Easy to do - Just create an Exhibition Match and change the mutator settings.
Max score = 1 Goal
2v2 with Rookie Bots you should be able to smash through any three Rocket Labs quite fast.

As Krazy-RN pointed out I left out the arenas that you need to complete, they are -

Utopia Retro
Cosmic
Pillars
9
1

You should list the names of the Arenas.

The quickest way to obtain this achievement is to load up exhibition games by yourself. Select the Soccer mode in a 1v1 game, no bots, and one goal to win the game. Play in either of the Rocket Labs Arenas (Underpass, Utopia Retro, Double Goal, Cosmic, or Pillars). You'll only need to play in three of these for the achievement, but don't play in the same one twice. Then just score a goal once the match starts to win. When the game is over, exit to main menu to change the arena and after the third win you should unlock the achievement.

0

Play an exhibition private match in the Rocket Lab Arenas and setting the match length to 5mins and goals to 1, this way you can finish each of the 3 maps in under 30secs.

There are 3 maps in this arena that cycle randomly:

  • Utopia Retro: The arena is a circle like doughnut shape.
  • Cosmic: The arena is raised on the outside edges with a pit in the middle
  • Pillars: This arena has 2 triangular shaped pillars on the right, and left side.

Note: As new patches come out, they are introducing new Rocket Lab Arenas. It may be necessary to play these new arenas to pop this trophy. Despite the trophy description many have claimed they had to play the new 4th arena to pop this trophy. Therefore, new updates may require you to play on all of Rocket Lab arenas not just the initial 3 that were first introduced.

In the mutator settings, you can set the match duration to 5 minutes and play until 1 goal .
Start matches without bots in 3 arenas that have “ rocket-lab ” in their names.
This way you will get the trophy in less than a minute)
