How to unlock the Chemophobia achievement in Rogue Legacy - Definitive Guide
This achievement is for defeating Ponce de Freon, the remixed version of the game's third boss (in the Tower area of the map).
To unlock this boss fight, you must defeat Ponce de Leon and then obtain Ponce de Leon's Obol, which is a random item you might receive when praying at a shrine.
The next time you try to enter the castle, Charon will comment on the Obol and take it from you.
Next, you need to find the Tower boss room. Usually the doors to boss rooms will be closed after you defeat the boss, but once you give Charon the corresponding Obol, the room will reopen. If you enter, you'll be taken to this special remixed boss fight. Failing one of these fights will drop you back outside the boss room, so you can retry immediately, making it very easy to practice until you can get them all done.
The remixed bosses are the hardest challenges in the game by far. In each, you'll play as a special character, so you can't just grind out gold to get a better dude.
For Ponce de Freon, you get Sir Dovahkiin, a level 0 Barbarian King with OCD and Dementia, neither of which make any sort of difference here. His basic stats are:
495 HP
60 MP
176 Strength
75 Intelligence
and he comes equipped with several runes:
6 Vault (a bunch of air jumps)
Sprint (dash)
Here's a screenshot of his stat page, if you'd prefer:
Basic Strategy
Ponce de Freon's moveset is identical to his brother's, though the fire trail he leaves takes longer to dissipate and the fireballs may be a bit closer together. As such, the best strategy is basically the same: try to lead him around the stage so that the first fireballs start disappearing by the time you return to that part of the map.
One boon in this particular fight is that you don't have to contend with anything else in the arena - the spike balls from the fight with Leon are absent here. That means you can comfortably focus on avoiding Freon's attacks without worrying about ramming into an off-screen enemy.
Another important note: you have to perform a series of air jumps to reach the floating platforms and circle the stage. When you get pinned against a wall, jump up to the ceiling and continue looping.
Because Sir Dovahkiin is a Barbarian King, you can use his Barbarian Shout to clear lingering fireballs. You only have enough MP to use this ability three times, so you need to be somewhat conservative with it, but it can get you out of tight spots when you really need it.
Unfortunately, there's not really much else to say about this particular fight. Here's the video of my successful fight against him to give you an idea of how it goes:
Let me know if you have any questions about any of these tips or if you have any suggestions of your own.
Good luck!
This is my winning attempt for anyone wanting to see the full fight (this took me hours to do)
The trademarked chemical refers to Ponce de Freon, the remixed version of the third boss. In order to fight this remixed boss, you need to give Ponce de Leon’s Obol to Charon. Ponce de Leon's Obol is randomly acquired from Spiritual Shrines after you have defeated the regular version Ponce de Leon (see Pyrophobia for information on fighting the original). Once you give the Obol to Charon, the boss door will reopen in the Maya.
You will earn this trophy once you have defeated Ponce de Freon. Unlike the original boss fight, you do not restart with a new character when you die against this boss. Instead you respawn right outside the boss room. Another difference is that you are given a specific character for this fight, so you can attempt this boss fight regardless of your level.
This fight is very similar to the original but with less obstacles. You need to be very careful about not spawning too many fireballs. If you get into trouble, use your Barbarian Shout with to clear some of the fireballs.
The reason I have flagged this achievement as missable is because there is no free roam or any way to access your playthrough again after you beat the final boss. Once you defeat the final boss, you'll be forced to start New Game+ immediately, and you will have to meet the requirements below all over again to get this achievement.
This achievement is for beating the remixed version of Ponce de Leon. To access the remixed version of this boss, first you need to beat the standard version. Once done, you now need to find a Shrine Statue anywhere (on the current run or any subsequent run) and hope that the item you get from the Shrine is Ponce's Obol. This is complete RNG, both with finding a Shrine and getting the Obol, but my experience was that the game was pretty good about granting you the Obol when you were after it. Just ensure that once you get the Obol, you don't accidentally replace it with a different item from a different Shrine. Once you die and are back outside, talk to Charon to give him the Obol. This will open the boss door for Ponce in the Maya permanently (meaning on all subsequent runs, so you don't have to worry about beating it on this next run). Now, when you return to the boss door in the Maya and enter it, you'll be able to fight the remixed version, Ponce de Freon. Like all remixed boss fights, you play as a set character (so you don't need to wait until you level up more, and you can't build up your character to be stronger against the boss) and if you die, you're put right back outside the boss door with no penalty (you don't lose any money or progress, and can attempt again right away as many times as you want).
The remixed boss fight is nearly the same as the original, with two minor changes:
- There are no spike balls to avoid, but much less platforms to use
- The fireballs be drops last far, far longer than the ones from the original boss.
That's really all three is to this fight. You'll have to do more fireball weaving and dodging, but there isn't anything else to deal with or avoid. Once you defeat him and open the chest, you'll get a medallion piece and this achievement.
