How to unlock the Neverending Story achievement in Roguebook - Definitive Guide

These are the scroll looking objects you can find on the map, there are 40 of them according to the achievement progression file for the steam version, here is the list so you can check them off as you get them:

Three Wishes
Mirror Phantasm
Magic Carpet
Aurora Unlock?
Kobold Mercenary
Weeping Idol
Baldurion
Amai Gem Merchant
Cobalt Gargoyle
Krogs Dinner
Thyrian Expedition
Spellwhirl
Failed Experiment
Message in a Bottle
Gates of Pandora
Time of Legends
Simulacrum of Obedience
Llamacorn
Ancient Herald
Treasure Map
Animated Banquet
Majinata
Apex
Mother of All Yaks
Royal Judge
Forbidden Library
Queen Magda
Doomgate
Rain of Fish -- Must have Aurora
Imperial Camp
Wheel of Chaos
Soul Pact
Day of the Dragons -- Must have Sharra
Ogre Dance -- Must have Sorocco
Bloodsong -- Must have Seifer
Celeste
Tarum
Windgate
Chrysalis
Flash Wind

Pretty sure the aurora unlock is just referring to the first time you get her teapot, and so can only happen once. Ive encountered about 300-400 of these narratives across ~80 runs as of writing this and im still missing 4 of them according to the achievement tracker. There is also a narrative for each of the 4 base characters, where they must be in your party for the event to show up. As a reference, one of the ones im missing is aurora's event and ive used her in 95% of my runs :/

EDIT: Can confirm for Rain of Fish you should run Aurora/Fugoro with NO epilogue levels, and just do Act 1 on repeat. It still took MANY tries, but it did show up eventually.

Also, if you disable the embellishments for alchemists/gemstones/faeria wells, it will improve the odds that runes of sight reveal a narrative.

There's definitely some smaller bugs to the game. Picking up gems that sometimes don't register to the character. I've been writing down everything and had played all seifer cards but didn't get the achievement and then today i play a random card i'd played a million times before and then the play all cards for seifer achivement just pops out of nowhere. I've also had 2 events that are bugged on the tracker and didn't increase the progress.

Unfortunately keeping a list to check-off doesn't help on it's own for this achievement. I kept a list like most people would/did thinking that would be golden but the achievement is bugged so in order to keep proper track you also need to check the achievement tracker when visiting a new story event to see if the tracker actually went up any which would mean it "really" did count! I kept close track on a list and I'm technically only missing one - Rain of Fish... however the tracker is showing only 92%. What a bunch of garbage, I obviously have no clue which other 2 I'm missing now! (The tracker goes up in 2 or 3% increments so since someone mentioned 95% then that would mean 98 then 100 would be the next two.)
Thought I'd point that out for new people... you have to not only keep a checklist but you have to monitor the achievement tracker to see if you actually got credit for the event. Majority of the time it will increase but apparently it will screw you on a couple along the way and might be helpful to know which ones.

There was a patch on April 5 for the steam version that apparently fixed the achievement so hopefully that makes its way to consoles soon.

yea, mine SHOULD be 97-98%, since im only missing one, but is at 90% instead. I sent an email to support a couple days ago, hopefully I hear back. Ive done like 50 more runs and still havent got the Rain of Fish event, so Im gonna give up on it for now until I hear back. That being said if ANYONE has gotten the Rain of Fish narrative, PLEASE let us know, especially if you remember your party and what act it was in.

Well, food for thought.... are there original story events that aren't scroll events? Say, with Fugoro, when you have him in your party & Fuguro steals an item, each of the characters will have a conversation with you the first time it happens that's basically "How did you steal that if you're here?" etc.

I'm very unfamiliar with Steam as a whole, but do they have this achievement that confirmed popped off of these 40?

Im also now at 90% with only Rain of Fish left so I get the impression that something is wrong with both that specific event and the tracker in general. As for Fugoro Ive been using him with Aurora for potentail Fugoro specific events and aside from his interactions with the steal an item thing I havent encountered anything.

all the achievements are the same as steam achievements, so Im making the assumption they are the same, ive encountered Fugoro with each hero combination anyways. But yea, definitely seems like its not working as intended in at least one way here.

Good News: I found Rain of Fish
Bad News: 92% with apparently all events done
Note: Rain of Fish was act 1 Aurora/Fugoro and I had the map completely revealed with the Imperial Camp event

By SG1 Stelson on 15 Mar 2022 13:48
Side question... is there anywhere that details what these events are? I ran into one where it talked about "A frightening ritual" and a "ring of summoners" and I sacrificed a third of my health for a voidstone, but I have no idea what the title of the event would be. Is there anywhere on the game where these are titled so I know which is which?

(Also, upon doing some Google-Fu, nobody on Steam or PS has unlocked this either, and LOTS of complaints about bugginess, sooooooo that's no bueno.)

Most of the events are card names from faeria, gates of pandora and imperial camp are the only ones that arent. If you google faeria + an event name you should be able to find the art that matches. Pretty sure yours was soul pact.

Good to know that rain of fish IS in the game. Please let us know if you somehow get higher than 92%.

Shazam that one in particular is the Doomgate event. Im pretty sure Soul Pact is the one where you get to pick a previously skipped over talent\perk or whatever they are called.

So I purchased the game on steam (and then immediately refunded lol) to take a look at the achievement progression file and there are definitely only these 40 events.
Well I looked at website which takes the file and tells you the events that you're missing.

So.... ignoring the premise it may just be bugged, maybe there's certain ones that only move if you make a specific choice? i.e. the one that lets you jump to the next level or stay behind and reroll an event. Maybe you have to jump forward once to make it work? Just wondering if anyone has been playing out all scenarios just to hedge that bet?

By ShazamFTW on 19 Mar 2022 01:08
they all increment on encountering them, not on you clearing them, so the choices you make dont matter. If they did, the tracker would increment MUCH slower than 2-3% each time, as most events have 3+ choices

Ive been testing choosing different options and ive tried most of them at this point and nothing has gone up.

By SG1 Stelson on 19 Mar 2022 09:04
Well.... how do we summon Vudix? Because 2-3% has been my increments as well, and 40 x 2.5% = 100, so one or two of the 40 just must not trigger, so it must be an easy fix code wise.

I've been playing though on an alternate account and I appear to have found culprit #1 (assuming its not random). The Queen Magda event didn't increase the tracker for me (I picked the basic challenge option). If I find others Ill edit this comment.

If anyone happens to have not done that event yet and can confirm/deny if the tracker goes up that would be great. Also goes for other events not increasing the tracker.

The game updated to 1.10.15.2, and the Steam patch notes for 1.10.15 do explicitly mention a fix for "Neverending Story". So this has very likely been fixed.

So, now that we're all fixed up. Any suggestions as to best spawn events on a given map? Does it matter what difficulty you play at?

By ShazamFTW on 16 Apr 2022 16:12
I did all my grinding at epilogue 0 (so no modifiers) so I cant say for sure but I dont think it matters. Its does seem possible (probably likely) that some events spawn more often in later acts though. (I dont think I've seen Majinata or Apex in Act 1 for example).

I was at the same place as Schaafy, needed the 3 above & rain of fish, down to just Magda now (And I can confirm Rain of Fish was 1st act). I'm assuming this is the Magda event where you fight for treasure, not the one where she swaps your starting treasure. Do we know if that can trigger act 1?

And the idea of turning off things to make the eyes find events quicker, for some reason I would have never thought of that, so thank you for pointing it out. Much more success per run finding events. In theory, you could do the one that triples eyes but turns off towers, but 500 towers is like a lot, so might as well get a couple of those in.

By ShazamFTW on 19 Apr 2022 21:29
Yeah its the treasure one. I found it for the achievement in act 2 (I feel like Ive seen it in act 1 but I cant confirm that). Also who was your second hero when you found Rain of Fish?
0
0
By SG1 Stelson on 20 Apr 2022 07:40
In all my attempts of act 1, never saw the magda event, so best bet is doing all 3 acts for that. I also found the towers to be more helpful than the runes, since finding the runes can be a pain. Just make sure to use both towers and reveal a decent amount of big areas before using the runes, since the less choices they have of things to reveal, the more likely they are to reveal a narrative.

Stelson, I'm about 90% sure it was the ogre boy as I needed Ogresong still when I found it. Note: Hit Magda on Act 3 w/Sword & Rat. Squealed a little when it popped up...

The thread at the link below has pictures of each encounter to help you figure out which you still need.

https://forum.psnprofiles.com/topic/125182-neverending-story...

I still can’t get Rain of Fish to pop up and I swear I’ve hit all the others but my tracker is at 92% so I don’t know…lol

Finally got Rain of Fishes tonight. I think this one needs Aurora to not be at max health when you unveil it on the map. The screenshots I’ve seen of this one all seem to be when Aurora doesn’t have max health so I took her down a bit in the first battle and made sure she stayed below max after each fight.

This achievement is 100% buggy. I have visited every story event at least once and I’m still stuck at 95%. Reading some PS boards it sounds like the same issue exists for some players on PlayStation as well (getting stuck at 95%). I will submit a bug report to the dev with hopes they will look into it.

Is there any point to even run the Epilogue Level 15+? Also, there seems to be no record about the Story Events already played.

No point to higher epilogues unless you want the challenge, and yea no in-game way to check which narratives you have seen, gotta check em off from the list as you encounter them.

Three events missing. cry cry cry

My checklist shows 2 unchecked. Gates of Pandora and Message in a Bottle. Does anyone recall if these only appear in certain chapters?

No idea what the third could be since I've checked everything else off. Something just must not have tracked the night I got it. Started another checklist and am taking screenshots of each as I visit them now.

I hate this achievement.

Since I saw someone pop this on December 21st I figured I'd try to get it again. No luck. For those like me that it's stuck on 95% it's still bugged.

By exorr on 13 Feb 2023 16:28
Yup, I started after the update and two events never registered. The only way to pop this currently is if you saw those events before the current update. The person who popped this in December probably did most of the work when it was unobtainable the first time and just got around to redo the initially bugged stories.

Edit: I believe there were two initially bugged stories, and when they patched, two different events got bugged.

Any idea which ones would have been bugged after the patch? Or just assuming that this is the case after being stuck at 95%?

I have been playing Roguebook for 2 years. i finally got Rain of Fishes with Sharra in the 2nd area with less then 10hp on both characters using the greed epilogue 'only' to lower my life before picking up the scrolls. also, i had rain of fish card in hand just in case. not sure if that is needed? It took me about 10-20 tries like that. I am at 95%. i think i still need Day of Dragons. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? i have tried all characters so far with Sharra.

MazaX managed to knock out the achievement after it stopped at 95% for everyone. I carefully looked at the dates of the knocked out achievements and it is safe to say that she started playing in mid-2023, i.e. after everything broke. I wrote to him to find out how he did it. If I receive an answer, I will write back.

And so, I'm stuck at 95% too. I have read all sorts of sources and the most appropriate explanation is that these 2 events were not taken into account: Aurora Unlock + Rain of Fish.
And I would have come to terms with the fact that it is impossible to get this achievement if it were not for MazaX. He started playing on 11 May 23 and I finished on 28 Dec 23, i.e. after the achievement broke. And I can't get it out of my head. I wrote to him, but unfortunately I did not receive a reply from him.
I believe there are 4 possible explanations:
1) MazaX somehow modified the save files. This method works 100% for the Steam version, but I do not know how to access cloud saves on Xbox One. (It seems very unlikely, since MazaX has played for more than 150 hours and, in general, almost does not complete the game at 100%)
2) He played the Roguebook version - the Deluxe Edition of the Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One. It came out later than the main game, maybe there are no problems with the stories.
3) He was just lucky and, for some reason, the game registered all the broken events for him.
4) He did something on purpose during the game to unlock this achievement. (Here I can only think of completely deleting cloud saves and games, and knocking out all events again)
I can't check option 2, if someone has played this version, please unsubscribe.
Option 4 seems to me the only salvation. I checked, when deleting all saves, the game starts from the beginning. So you can try your luck with Aurora Unlock + Rain of Fish again. My advice is to try to unlock the Aurora Unlock event using Sharra + Sorocco. This is not accurate, but someone wrote that this is the only way it can be counted.
To get Aurora Unlock, you must complete the game once, and then reach level 3. There should be a legendary Aurora artifact lying there, which must be given away and then the story will start.

Unfortunately, I can't say if these stories counted towards advancing the achievement, because it looks like in order for the progress bar to start moving, you'll have to unlock more stories than you had before the reset. Thus, it is possible to check whether these stories are counted only by reopening at least 39 stories.
Therefore, if there are brave souls who are ready to check it out, I want to wish them good luck and tell them about the method of how to quickly open stories.
First, you need to know that some stories only appear on the 2nd or 3rd floor and you will never see them on the 1st. For all stories except 4:
Day of the Dragons -- Must have Sharra
Ogre Dance -- Must have Sorocco
Bloodsong -- Must have Seifer (Seifer's health must be over 20)
Rain of Fish -- Must have Aurora (Aurora's health should be less than 10 when opening the story)
There are no other special requirements except for the floor (I was able to get all the other 35 stories for Sharra+Seifer)

Method:
The game retains the player's position on the map only in certain situations, namely when using ink, MODIFIED brushes, finish a battle, opening towers, fairies, getting a card from a casket, stones from mines, etc.
But if you ONLY use regular brushes to open and search for events, there is a way to "roll back" their use.
To do this, after you have just opened the map, you need to pick up a story, or start a battle, or open a chest with cards, or start choosing stones in the mine, or interact, but do not take the artifact And at that moment go to the main menu. This way, you will be returned to the last saved state and you will be able to explore the map AGAIN.
Thus, after several exits to the menu, you will be able to find out the location of all the stories on the level map and interact with them.
Moreover, I found an interesting fact that sometimes, after some actions, events can change to random others. It looks like it has something to do with opening the card and/or using ink/brushes.
Thus, the order for the most effective run to explore the stories is as follows.
1) Open 2 towers, trying not to waste brushes using ink.
2) Save your state. The easiest way to do this is through the casket of wisdom. Interact with him, but choose not to get the card, but to leave. This way the game will record your last state.
3) Use regular brushes to open the part of the map where you haven't been. If you don't find anything, just start one of the events I described above and go to the menu. If you have done everything correctly, then you will start in the last saved place with all the brushes.
4) Keep looking for stories. In order for them to be counted, it is enough just to open them, NOT TO COMPLETE them. If you complete the story, then your position is saved. So after opening, just go to the menu if you want to use this method.
5) Find all the events on the map and watch them. There are usually 3 of them. If Apex falls out, then 4 (including it).
6) The more brushes you have, the more of the map you will open at a time.
7) Focus on levels 2 and 3, because they show stories that cannot fall on level 1.
8) Once you have found the right number of stories, you can safely pack up for further passage and move on to the next level.
9) Defeating a level 3 boss is not necessary if you are only looking for stories. So, in order not to waste time, after you find all the stories on level 3, just give up and start a new race.
10) It is most effective from the very beginning of levels 2 and 3 to find all 3 or 4 stories, interact with them, and check them again before leaving for the next lvl or giving up. In some situations, they could change.

A list of stories I've never seen on the 1st floor:
Celeste
Animated Banquet
Gates of Pandora (3 floor)
Forbidden Library
Baldurian
Queen Magda
Majinata
Three wishes
Soul pact
Mirror Phantasm
Llamacorn (2 floor)
Apex Predator
Doomgate
Spell Whirl
Maybe it's random, but I've never seen them on the 1st floor in the long hours of grind.

I've described everything I've learned in the last 60 hours. I really hope that one day someone will be able to get this achievement again and figure out how it works. If I can share something else that will help with this achievement, write to me, I will be happy to help.

I’m on the Deluxe Edition and was playing between Series X and One, so that may have added variables on my end, as achievement tracking would show on one but not the other. It definitely made it so my Sharra Mastery got stuck and won’t unlock, and I’m guessing it happened one game where I encountered a glitch and things crashed. I can’t rule out the Deluxe Edition being fine… as long as you don’t crash the game. Will come back to this sometime, but my backlog and time is limited

Just got Rain of Fish (on Chapter 2) and am now in the "95% club". Was using the Greed is Good epilogue level to lower Aurora's health before picking up scrolls. Hope this bit of info helps someone looking for that story. Pretty sure I've encountered every other story according to the pics posted on the PS site linked above so this achievement is still definitely broken, will continue playing a bit more before I give up. roll

Just a heads up for people but there is a possibility that this achievement might not always track properly. Ive been keeping track with this list and I should only be missing 3 (Day of Dragons, Rain of Fish and Treasure Map) but my tracker is only at 85%. With 40 events the tracker should go up by 2-3% each time implying about 2 events that haven't tracked for me.

One thing I can think of is Windgate might only track if you actually take it to the next area instead of rerolling.

Edit: Fairly soon after typing this I got Day of Dragons and it went up 2% so yeah that isnt a good sign lol.
Edit 2: Using the windgate didn't change anything.

So theres been a patch and according to the devs on twitter its 'resolved some unobtainable achievements' so hopefully this is fixed (the patch notes themselves dont actually mention it). If it is fixed it doesn't auto pop so it may be a case of finding the events that were bugged again.

Edit: I just found the Seifer event again and it went up so unless the Aurora Unlock event was one of the bugged ones (lol), this should be fixed.

can confirm those were the same 3 events i needed to get again as well. been farming act 1 for over 4 hours now with Aurora/Fugoro, takes about 5 minutes to do a couple battles and open most of the map, still no rain of fish, so they didnt make THAT event any more common.

On a side note, i turned off the alchemist, extra gem stone, extra heart embellishments, and play with the Fugoro's Hat epilogue modifier so that runes of sight are much more likely to reveal a narrative.

Ive gone up over 15% on the last gemstone achievement while chasing this narrative, and thats at a MAX of 1 gemstone per try :(
