Ultimately, it all boils down to RPG, but I've found that optional bosses give at least 400 coins in loot, so try to go down a path that has at least one optional boss.
Note: There is a blessing that starts you off with 500 coins. This does not affect this achievement, so don't worry about using that blessing.
