How to unlock the Dressed to kill achievement in Ruiner - Definitive Guide

Outfits are unlocked by completing different tasks such as beating the game, finishing the Arena: Colosseum mode and many others. You can see how to unlock them all by going into Settings > Gameplay and do what it takes to get them all. MOST of them are not hard to get and there's just one or two that might require some effort from the player but the challenges are very doable and should not give you trouble unlocking them.

Now notice I capital said MOST because there's one outfit that will test all your skill and patience in this game: the McFly outfit! The requirement to unlock it is to beat speedrun mode in under 1 hour. If you look it up on YT you'll find several speedrun videos of this game but most of them get close to 1 hour by the time they complete it. I've watched a few of those speedruns and they make a solid decent run with advanced time saving killing techniques and still finish at the 54, 55, 57 min mark so this mode leaves a very small room for error. I'm not considering speedruns containing glitches and skips, only normal runs from beginning to end having to fight all the enemies and bosses.

The thing with this mode is that 1 hour is roughly the time it takes for an average player to make a "perfect" run so the devs were very precise on that time and some players might even consider unfair I'd say. The reason why the time to finish is so tight, considering you make a solid speedrun, is because there's a lot of waiting whenever you reach a new area and have to eliminate all enemies before proceeding. I mean, you'll fight a whole bunch of enemies before continuing and even if you kill them immediately as they spawn you still have to wait for the next wave to spawn and that consumes quite some time, which is key here and when you put together all those seconds you lose just waiting for enemies to spawn and ships to drop more enemies these seconds turn to MINUTES, a few minutes that will determine if you'll succeed or fail.

But don't let this keep you from trying and eventually succeed. It IS very challenging to master a 1 hour speedrun but practice makes perfect. I personally ALWAYS struggle with speedruns no matter the game or the game genre for that matter, speedruns always prove to be a challenge for me and make me spend a lot of time trying to master it and getting the par time. And that's funny because I see a lot of comments from people that watched the same video guide as me and say they got it after a few attempts. In my case I'm not exagerating when I say I tried HUNDREDS of times on some games until I pull it off (not the case in this particular one). Keep at it and you'll eventually get it.

Anyway, I diverted a little bit from the topic at hand but back to it: before attempting the speedrun mode know that if you're playing on Xbox there's the crashing issue. The game WILL crash while you're playing this mode if you're doing it on console. From what I found it differs from player to player on which part the game tends to crash. For me the game kept crashing on the "Mothers Womb" chapter right after the part you kill the 4 ANGELS each one with a hosts' pile under them. I've talked to the most recent winners of this achievement and some of them got it playing on pc and they said the game didn't crash at all, not even once, so apparently the pc version can sustain this mode to the end without crashing. It is possible to complete it on console, you'll want to empty your system cache every time before playing this mode to make the crashes less often but still it's not a 100% crash free and occasional ones can happen. It seems on Xbox X the crashes are less likely to occur.

I'm leaving this video guide showing a 57:38 min successful speedrun that I used as reference. You can find other videos with a shorter completion time and some of them are finished with several minutes to spare but these are skillful players with advanced killing approaches and some risky strats that can get you killed. They come close to death on many occasions.

When it comes to speedruns I always look for the tightest successful par time because these are the ones where normally the player makes some mistakes and has a simpler less advanced gamestyle and techniques but is still able to pull it off. I like that in a speedrun because I feel I have room to fail at certain points which will cost me some time but not enough to ruin my run completely to the point where I have to start over. Before my successful run I was having an even better one where I was 1 min ahead of the guy in the video but sadly the game crashed. cry

Then I retried and managed to beat it! rock
My time was 58:40:140.

Just a few tips that will save you some precious seconds:

1- If you defeat Nerve then restart the speedrun you'll start with his blade as your melee weapon instead of the pipe. The blade deals more damage killing or incapacitating many creeps of the inicial levels with just one swing.

2- If you come to a new area where there's a checkpoint and you're facing tough enemies being low on health like half a cross I strongly recommend you just die immediately and restart from the checkpoint with full health rather than trying to survive and end up dying without making to the next one. If that happens you'll have to kill all the enemies again to the point you died and as I mentioned above waiting for the enemies to spawn or drop from the ships consumes precious time.

3- You'll notice this player clear most areas with the VIS CARVER melee weapon using the spinning attack. It's a very strong and helpful attack that wipe out most enemies instantly and you'll be using this ability a lot. Just keep an eye on the durability of your weapon. You don't want to waste it all up and wait a few seconds for your supply drop to send a new one before you can continue spinning killing your foes. To prevent that from happening the best thing you can do is whenever you reach a new area while you wait for the enemies to drop from the ships or spawn call the supply drop, just be careful not to be squashed by it. Grab the fresh blade before the timer runs out and if your previous weapon is still solid you can switch freely between the 2 without having to worry about calling a new one while you fight.

Other than that there's not much more I can say to make your life easier. Just follow the video guide, try to memorize the levels layout and where the enemies spawn to minimize your overall time.

All credit goes to Michael Lux for recording the video.

I hope you manage to beat the par time challenge itself and wish you good luck with the crashing issue. GO PUPPY! headspin

I tried to get this Achievement on three different Xbox One Consoles with the same result.

When you are playing with the speed you have to to reach the Goal of under one hour, the Game will sooner or later crash. It has nothing to do with a specific Level, just with the speed.

When you play a smooth Speedrun where your fast but dont smash to much buttons at the same time its no problem. But when your on Fire it has two different endings:

1: The Game just Crashs, sooner or later but it will happen (extremely frustrating when it occurs in the Final Fight Area)

2: You quit the Game by yourself before the Crash occurs, because you endet outside the Level (and im not talking from the Glitches you can use to safe Time). This one is way rarer but still frustrating.

Even the Game is out of Gamepass, ill hope the fix it (and make a second part).
If you right now still want to give it a try, i have a few additional Hints.

1. Use a Elite Controller and put the LB/RB on the back paddles
2. Dont use the "Ingame" Mod Changer. Pause the Game and then chose the Mods you need for your tactics, because the Timer stops then.
3. Learn where your preferred weapon is on the Drone Drop Wheel
4. Yes it costs a little bit of time but it safes it later when you Level correct, so get the first two upgrades.

Glad to know you managed to beat speedrun mode after all and found a way to work around the crashing issue. Thank you for commenting and making the solution information richer. You even got a better time than me, congrats! clap clap

Crashed again at the same spot, right before Trafficking 3 battle fight, again was ahead on time. And then 2 runs before that I killed him, but he killed me at the exact same time. And then my last run, I went to spin attack a guy and flew off the map and was stuck there... This game is really doing my head angryangry

I would consider doing a hard reset of your console before your next attempt. Hard resets seem to almost always have a beneficial effect. I was considering double stacking this game and doing it again on PC but seeing as how it's leaving Game Pass soon, I decided not to. Didn't want to rush through it again within a short time frame. It's a really great game and it's unfortunate the crashing happens only for the speedrun. I posted a question a long time ago on the dev's Twitter page when I was doing it but I never got a response from them. So I'd recommend hard resetting it and just keep at it. Eventually, it will go through crash-free.

This game is leaving Gamepass soon and I really wanna try to go for this achievement as it’s one of the two I’m missing. I keep seeing people complaining about the game crashing, does anyone know if this has been fixed or if maybe playing on an SSD eliminates this issue? Last thing I would want is to grind for this achievement only for the game to crash and have to restart everything. Thanks!

Tankk OG said it crashed for him on 4/23/2020 so unless the devs fixed it within a day, the glitch is still there.

I'm almost certain everyone that has this achievement has had the game crash for them on multiple good runs. It's up to you if you're willing to deal with that. It took me about 8-10 runs (can't remember exact) but more than half of those runs have crashed for me and I just kept going due to the completionist in me.

The game crashed on me a couple of times on X1 so doesn't look like its been fixed. If you have a W10 pc I suggest you play it on there as thats been stable so far for me (I just need to git gud)

Can’t confirm if it’s been fixed but playing on an SSD, I had no issues with the speed run mode, my game hasn’t crashed once. This achievement is still really hard to get though, always averaging around 1 hour and 20 mins. :(
Edit: Played on an Xbox One X with external SSD.

Couldn't even finish speedrun mode in a row of 3 times for an unavoidable crash on "Mothers Womb" level, right after the place to destroy 4 Angels while avoiding hosts. once the barricade is open the crash is more like a force quit at exactly the same point when I dashed there. I realized the same crash point at my 2nd run, so before my 3rd run I restarted my console and waited for 10 secs before moving on and it still crashed. Perhaps killing all those hosts and their piles instead of dashing forward might solve this? Hilariously tomorrow the game will get pulled off from game pass according to the site news and the crash still exist today lol. Played on my original Xbox1 so in case you'd attempt this play on PC or Xbox X.

Edit: Beat speedrun mode on my 4th run without crashing, Emptying cache helped. It's a must for the original xbox1

FYI: Playing on Xbox Series X doesn’t eliminate the crashing issue. Had the game crash during my NG+ and deathless runs after killing the 4 Angels with dead Hosts’ piles under them (took it a bit slow on my speedrun so it didn’t crash there then).

Hmm, about to give this try soon, I'm on the Series X, but I've not had it crash a single time before now. Really hope it that will continue. I never tried to speed my way through the game though, and it sounds like the crashes are loading issues.

Wow...I actually managed it on my first try, with a little over 1 minute to spare. I'd say I died about 6-7 times, but still managed it. I didn't think I'd be able to make it, because I died so much. But it seems I was able to make up time in the linked video by doing it faster/better than the video at later points in the game.

The video linked by Michael Lux was a giant help, I tried to copy it move for move. I was playing on the Series X, no crashes, but YMMV.

No way in hell an oversight is getting patched 6 years after launch; the last level bit is probably just a regular crash. You’re gonna have to just not go that fast on certain sections.

I almost gave up this one. Tried it on PC and Xbox Series numerous times a day for almost a week and I just barely made it. Maybe it was just me. Had a few crashes both on PC and Xbox (I don't think I would have made it on those runs but still hurt). Here are the tips that helped me:
- I had to turn off Ruiner kills (finishers) to even have a chance.
- Restarting after killing Nerve to keep the sword saved of a lot of time for me.
- I had to redistribute points after almost every battle eventually. Either to keep max dash between battles or to tailor myself to the battle.
- I used Vis Carver for most enemies, the Electra+Vis for the triple Trafficiking boss battle and the mini boss battle afterwards. There is a guaranteed Electra on a pedestal after killing a miniboss early on.
- I couldn't kill the Mother with dashing and shooting, I had to redistribute for shield and block her beam then shoot her in the meantime. Bringing a strong weapon like Max Fusion helps a ton with killing it.
- I kept using the upgrade 50% more health and energy from sources early on but I had to give it up because I needed the points elsewhere. Later on, I put points on it before battles and eventually on the +1 health too which helped with the survival a lot.
- I kept dying randomly from high health both on PC and Xbox, it was extremely frustrating enemies can deal instakill damage randomly. On the damage side there was a bunch of time when my power attack did no damage and other times instakilled even strong enemies. What improved my chances was letting the power attack go before dashing at the enemies instead of dashing close and releasing it.
- I would suggest going for the finish even if it looks like you won't make it. On my final run I died a bunch of times at the end of long waves - which is the worst time waster. I even died in the last battle - I never had issues with - at the very last enemy when it only need one hit! I had more than half of my health left, I thought I will go insane. Then I somehow managed to barely make it in the leftover few minutes.

wow! I can relate to your experience HUN playmore. I suck big balls speedrunning. The pressure is just too much of a stress factor for me and I always think the time is not good enough so I totally understand what you're saying. Coincidentally right now I'm playing a dlc in the Division game where not only you need to survive but kinda need to speedrun a little bit. It never ceases to surprise me that people still comment on this solution from time to time after so long from an indie game. I'm glad my solution is still somehow useful to people. Nice work man, congrats!

The game kept crashing for me there too at the Mother's Womb stage. I've lost 4 good attempts due to that. I have a theory that it's because we're not destroying the host piles that don't have an Angel but I don't want to have another good run and test it just for it to crash.

EDIT: I just beat it with a time of 57:38. Don't bother doing glitches/skips like the solution says (most of them are done on PC which imo is harder to replicate on console). I didn't do any and I still beat it with plenty of time to spare. With that said, I did destroy ALL the host piles (the ones on the way to the objective; I wouldn't worry about the extra ones like the room to the right of the TrafficKing boss) and it didn't crash for me there so if you're crashing at Mother's Womb, destroy all the host piles including the ones not guarded by an Angel.

Can't guarantee that my workaround works since I only tested it once but if anyone is getting frustrated, I'd try that out. Your first tip regarding Nerve's sword is awesome. If I knew I had a bad time in the later stages, I'd just restart and save about 30-40 seconds in the first three stages having the Nerve sword so thank you for that!

In addition, I created a spreadsheet to calculate my times (if I knew my progress was bad based on the calculated times, I'd just go ahead and restart along with some tips to remember for each stage). You're more than welcome to supplement your guide with it.

Lucky you achim, I can't get through an actual sub 1 hour try without it crashing the Xbox X. And this is even without using Overload + infinite dash which was crashing it everytime.

You will get outfits by completing a number of 'challenges' like, finish the game on Normal or Hard and beat Arena Mode.

This could be the hardest achievement and the one who will consume a lot of your time and patient, as you need to complete the speedrun in under an hour.
This is hard because you need around 59 minutes to finish assuming you don't die a single time and you don't lose time with boxes or exploring areas.

Fist of all, you can't stop to open boxes, you will lose a lot of time, if you die, you will lose time, the karma is actually very limited due to this, making this even harder.

It is not impossible, but you will roughly need more than 10 runs to learn all the areas and enemies.

My only advice is this: Unlock the Supply Drop ability when available and use it to spawn a handed weapon (like Vis Carver, Fire starter or Armor Breaker) to use it with Power Attack, as this combo is stronger enough to take down the big enemies. You'll maybe want to use Overload with a weapon like AT Fusion MAX to take out enemies like the angels and Mother fast.

After a few tries you will learn exactly when enemies spawn and how to deal with each one.
Good Luck.

There were 2 big challenges I faced trying to unlock this:

1. Technical problems mainly crashes during speedrun.

So, whether I tried a clean run or a glitch run, there was a random crash. There was no set pattern I could see. So my fix was to uninstall all, then reinstall. This seems to reset something in the background allowing you to at least complete a run.

Maybe there's a less intrusive way like deleting the save then restoring from cloud/backup. If you figure something leave a comment. With my dl speed, this limited me to one attempt per day.

2. Skill and tactics for speedrun mode.

*In general, I recommend being aggressive.
*Use power attack to eliminate mobs.
*Use power attack + overload on anything you can melee.
*For Mother, use overload + a big gun, or frags + a big gun.
*Spawn camp enemies by listening for a whooshing sound or seeing a marker appear on the floor.
*Use overload + infinite dashes to cover long stretches.
*Run past enemies that do not need to be killed.

I finished in 59 minutes. I used one skip in the 2nd half of Hanza Cargo (after the 1st elevator) (easy to do + low risk) (see jackintoshh video
). I was at ~31 minutes when mounting the 1st lightspeed bike. I died several times in the later levels.

Come on, puppy!

Why don't you explain how to do the skip ?

I added the video showing the skip. It's tricky to learn so I recommend practicing with level select. I hate the 1st fight after the elevator intermission because it's slow and the enemies like to use guerilla tactics. So if you can just skip that one corner it should save a decent chunk of time.
