How to unlock the The Merchant Mask achievement in Sable - Definitive Guide

See comments below by @Ryuukishi634 and @ wrhwk for important information, as this can bug or be missed depending on your actions during the Heartbreak in the City quest.

To get merchant badges you simply buy them for 100 cuts each from Merchant Iria in Eccia. You will probably need to progress the Heartbreak in the City quest in order to be able to speak with her. She's the one behind a door you need to bribe the guard with a pomegranate to get through.

There are only two quests that award Merchant badges, so you have to buy at least one from Iria. But apparently, if you never bribe the guard to Iria's office during Heartbreak in the City and finish the quest without talking to her, her office is permanently inaccessible and you can never buy the badge.

In addition, some people have reported that the two Merchant badges from quest rewards are glitched and never enter your inventory. So it may be necessary to buy all three badges from Iria regardless.

Haha, I have the exact opposite problem. I can talk to Iria, I can ask for badges, but when the shopping screen comes up, it's empty. I simply can't believe the number of bugs this game has...

Edit: a complete restart solved the problem.

Not sure if they patched it, but I finished Heartbreak in the City and then saw this so thought I had no chance. However, the guard was still there, bribed him, and then was still able to talk with Iria and she had 3 merchant badges.

I was not able to give a pomegranate to the guard during Heartbreak in the City. It was never an option. Might be patched.

I have the same issue. I've talked to the guy a number of times, at various points throughout the quest and he doesn't have an option to talk to him about Iria

The bug that the guard won’t let you enter Iria's office has been patched in Sable Patch 3.7.7:

"[Heartbreak in the City] It is now possible to bribe the guard to let Sable enter Merchant Iria's office even after quest completion."
