do the same thing as 'cougarslayer530' said but it was easiest when I pitched to myself and BUNTED it... you dont actually have to swing, just make contact and get on base... you can hold X as soon as the pitcher releases the ball

I did it bunting with no issues. The power up, I think, looks like a snowball and not stars around it though.

This can be problematic if you are waiting for the computer to throw you a mirage ball during the campaign because it rarely comes up and then the computer can be a pain in the butt and throw you a curve ball along with it.
I would recommend the two controller method as you can quickly build up power ups on the second controller (3 max at a time. Ways to get them quickly include: hitting home runs, striking batters out, double plays etc.) and then just keep using them until u get a mirage ball (its the one that looks like a ball with stars and sparkles around it). Once you have it just throw it down the middle and try to time it just right.
Edit: Just thought of an easier way to do this. The button that activates the star power can be pressed as the different power ups are cycling through, so when you see the image of the mirage ball hit the power up button and hopefully u will get it.
