How to unlock the Mermaid achievement in Sea of Solitude - Definitive Guide
This require a lot of swimming.
The best places to do are in areas free of the Whale so you don't have to worry about getting outside the safety border. 2 of the easiest spots are as follow:
CHAPTER 4 - HIDING After getting back on the boat from the end of chapter 3 you can leave it and swin around as the daylight is not restricted to it (just don't get too close to Sunny).
CHAPTER 11 - SOLITUDE Another good spot but requiring you to have finished the game. As the chapter is loaded head back to the cliff and jump into the water. It's always sunny so just swin in circles around the island and after some laps it will pop.

I did this near the beginning of the game using the ol' rubber band trick. Worked like a charm & it only takes 18 minutes! Yes, I timed it.

Yes, it's easy to get it at any point but you swim so much in this game that leaving this achievement to the end saves some time

This is better left until after completing the storyline, as you'll already have a decent amount of swimming done. Load up Chapter 2, Dangerous Water. Immediately do a 180, and jump into the secluded pool of water. Now just swim around until the achievement unlocks. Swimming in this area, also triggers the whale monster to go into attack mode (but it can't get to you since you are surrounded by buildings), so it will also count towards Danger Swimmer (credit to MrSniffss and Opticon12000 for that tip):
This chapter is also a great place for getting your 20 deaths by the whale monster.

From the starting point, run forward and a bit to the right, off the overhang into the water. The monster will eat you, and you'll respawn on the building again. Keep falling in the water to rack up deaths quickly, and you'll have this done in no time. If you get Danger Swimmer and Human Bait done and start to feel bored or claustrophobic swimming in the safe pool area, feel free to load up Chapter 12, The Beginning for a lot more freedom (and sunshine!) for the rest of your Mermaid swimming distance.Swim a lot in the sunshine. If you don't have it by the time you get then swim in circles before you approach the land. It shows progress on the Achievement Tracker.
In this game, there are two types of locations: sunny locations and ones shrouded in darkness. The ones shrouded in darkness will have a whale swimming around and will risk you getting eaten if you stay in the water for too long. In the sunny locations, you can swim around freely without worrying about getting eaten. The best way to get this trophy is to find a sunny area and swim around in circles. You will have many opportunities throughout the story to earn this trophy. If you have already completed the story, you can use chapter select. The exact distance required is unknown but it should take around 3-4 minutes of continuous swimming.
