Defeat 10 bosses with Artful Gambit relic on

How to unlock the What a technique! achievement in Sea of Stars - Definitive Guide

NOTE: Since many are curious if you could just kill the same boss 10x on the same save, I attempted it on the worm boss in the Forbidden Cavern at the beginning, FOR SCIENCE, and it didn't work. If you just want to fight the first boss or first few bosses to get this, you'll need to start a separate NG+ save file for the tracker to count them. The bosses don't really get harder though and the prologue is long so I personally wouldn't recommend but it's up to you.

Time to GIT GUD with timing your blocks!

Artful Gambit is a relic found in late/post-game.
Relic Effect: Health -95%, and enemies are invincible while casting. Timed blocks reduce all damage to 1, and Timed attacks deal double damage. This is one for the showoffs and speedrunners!
How to obtain it: Start up The Cerulean Expedition storyline anytime after unlocking Fleshmancer's Lair by going to the Camp on the world map and talk with Serai.
Quest walkthrough (puzzle solution spoiler):

NOTES/TIPS:
- You'll need to start New Game+ after unlocking the relic and play through the game to net the 10 boss kills with it on. (You can technically use it on some of the late game bosses before starting a NG+ run and they'll count but they will be much harder. I'd just recommend waiting until your new run.)
On NG+ you'll be super powerful so this won't be nearly as hard as it seems.

- You can turn the relic off in between bosses. Just make sure to reactivate it before facing each one.

- Once starting a new game, if you use the relic on each boss consecutively, you'll need to get to the Leaf Monster again on Mesa Island (credit: Himuki) to get the achievement. That will take roughly ~4-5 extra hours if you speed through.

Tips italicized below are from "SKizzUMATIK" in the comments.
- RB+A will super speed through text and holding B will skip animated videos. This saved me probably close to half an hour and countless mashing of the A button for dialogue.

- Helpful relics at any point do not impact the achievement.

- During boss fights, the most useful items are Leeching Thorn accessories, Reaper's Mercy bracelet, and the Double Edge relic which was helpful as its negative trait is basically moot with the Artful Gambit on.

- You have to re-equip every character with their gear as they get added to your party, this includes your main Solstice kiddos.

Just got it. Can confirm leaf boss as well, even though there are 15 boss-type encounters in total including the leafy boi. I'm guessing the ones that don't count as bosses are the intro training golum, the first encounter with Rockie (the rock Salamander immediately following the wind/blow ability), Malkomud (the Mole mage [I like you]), Duke Aventry, Acolytes 1 & 3, and Acolytes 2 & 4. However, I don't know which encounters don't count for sure so it's probably best to play it safe and have the relic on for all of them. Holy crap I just realized that you don't actually kill any of those bosses during those encounters, maybe that's why they don't count. Achievement should say *Destroy* 10 Bosses. Hmm.

A few notes:

• RB+A will super speed through text and holding B will skip animated videos. This saved me probably close to half an hour and countless mashing of the A button for dialogue.

• Helpful relics at any point do not impact the achievement.

• During boss fights, using the relic Double Edge was probably helpful as its negative trait is basically moot with the Artful Gambit on.

• You have to re-equip every character with their gear as they get added to your party, this includes your main Solstice kiddos.

Everything is so low level during this entire block of the game that this achievement turned out to be very easy; one just has to dedicate another chunk of time as you mentioned. Took me about 4 hours and 40 minutes blasting through.

Per the tracking in the Feats book I can confirm that the two Acolyte duo fights don’t count for this, and I suspect the Duke, Rockie (alone), and Wyrn are in the sane boat. Also the ‘if a boss isn’t destroyed it isn’t counted’ thing is wrong given Romaya and Malkomud.

Also also, this took me a little bit over 4 hours (4h 5-6m), might want to revise that time range down an hour.

Ah I didn’t think to track in the in-game book. I didn’t even notice I could “camp” the Vespertine until I was like 35 hours in. I was disappointed in the tracking after it didn’t show a recipe count, so I just ignored it.

I just had a thought I want to check out. Could it be faster to go through the first five in NG+ twice? Does that even count? I just got through Stormcaller, I wonder if restarting a NG+ and going through Malkomud again would do it.

Interesting that the guide above mentioned killing the slug 10 times didn't work, but Eldarion got it to work by killing the first 7/10 bosses and then the first 3/10 of those a second time and it did work?

ICE, did you save after Bosslug and start a full fresh NG+ each time?

By Za Pantsupati on 07 Sep 2023 18:38
No, I just reloaded my save over each time thinking the achievement tracker might track differently than the in-game tracker but it doesn't.
A new entire save each time would do it but that prologue is long. I feel like just continuing with the game would be faster. The bosses don't really get harder.
But I'll put it in the solution in case anyone else wants to go that route.

I played up to beating stormcaller then started a new game plus on that save and got my achievment after beating elder mist. Combine i got it unde five hours. Which could easily be done better seeing as i walked away from my game and didnt try to rush and read some of the dialog to see if playing as zale changed anything.

Wooooow I definitely spent my entire (well, tail-end of) my first playthrough thinking Reaper's Mercy left ENEMIES at 1HP if they were previously above 50%, and I couldn't understand why someone would want that. I was trying to save myself some time on run 2 by beating Gun Goddess with the relic on my first run, and that would have come in super handy if I'd known it applies to your character (which I would never refer to as "THE TARGET," game devs...ugh).

Has anyone had issues with this being bugged?? I tried beating BossSlug 10 times on ten new games and no luck, but the tracker wasn't moving the entire time...so I started thinking maybe he just doesn't count as an eligible boss for this achievement. But now I've moved forward and beaten Elder Mist as well and still 0% on the tracker. I REALLY do not want to go through all 5 hours and 10+ bosses only to find out that things are bugged for me...so is it normal for the tracker to not move along as you're doing this? Does it stay at 0% the entire time until it pops after the Leaf guy boss, or should it be updating the percentage after each eligible boss?

There is no external tracker for this achievement. The only tracker is on the Feats book in the ship.

@ChiflaGoodluck Thanks for the fast response! Good to know. I guess in that case, defeating just BossSlug ten times, even by starting a new file every time, does not count either. Although it's weird that some people are reporting having success doing 5 or 7 bosses on one file and then starting a second new file for the remainder...not sure how the game seems to be disqualifying repeats in some cases but not others.

Ok after trying to cheese this multiple different ways, and finally getting it the straightforward way, I can confirm that the Malkomud fight DOES count (because I accidentally walked into that one without having the relic turned on, and the achievement didn't pop for me until the next fight after Leaf Monster).

If you don't want to bother turning the relic on and off, at level 22 with the best gear, I just left it on and only suffered one single death the entire run to some random enemies right before the 10th boss. It's very doable.

I was hoping to get this from scratch on NG+ earlier than the leaf boss, but it seems a lot of boss-like encounters aren't actually bosses. It took around 4 hours.

3) Malkomud
4) Chromatic Apparition
5) Romaya
6) Botanical Horror
7) Dweller of Woe
8) Stormcaller

I’ve heard you can recycle NG+ over and over, beating both the BossSlug and Elder Mist 5 times each as opposed to getting through 10 bosses normally. This is meant to take around half the time - can anyone verify that this works?

By Mr Afrooo on 25 Nov 2023 08:20
Mr Afrooo, that's the scenario I lay out in the firs few sentences of the guide. It's possible to do this but the beginning prologue is so long that I'm 99% sure it's faster to just beat the first 10 bosses instead of restarting different NG+ save files.

By ICE Faux Pirate on 25 Nov 2023 16:11
Took me about 6 hours to do this achievement fully in NG+, up to and including the Leaf Monster (10th) Boss. Literally knew the layouts of all the levels well from doing collectibles, sprinted past all enemies possible, and skipped all dialog. Don't see how you could do this specific achievement from scratch in under 6 hours.

Never failed any battles. My one tip for this solution would be just to mention to turn on all Relics. They all benefit you in some way for this achievement.

Good guide I did it in 6:13 too many fights in-between bosses. If you are blocking better than me you should not have any problems with bosses and fights between. I never turned it off since I acquired that relic.

Dweller of Woe boss is the worst part. Double phase fight with non-combat sequence between. Second phase starts with either a basic attack or an unbeatable lock spell that multi-hits. I turned on the Amulet of Storytelling and Guardian Aura relics too to give me a few extra hit points because I suck at timing blocks.

Took me about 5h (party 23lvl) to reach leaf boss, with the most of relics on. The worst were Haunted Mansion because book-like monsters attack there only via casting, which means they are immortal till you break their locks, but most of the time it's impossible to do this in one turn ... annoying.

I advice to equip 'Leeching Thorn' trinket with 'Reaper's Mercy' party trinket. On second run you should have one Thorn and you can find second in the 'Mountain Trail' (first zone). That way two of your party members will be practically immortal since Thorn recovers your HP fully with normal attacks and Reaper's Mercy will leave you 1 HP every time when you take death blow, and your HP is above 50%.

Don’t underestimate Seraï’s Disorient skill. It delays enemy attacks, so you can get more hits in to a break a lock. Or you can kill the boss before they ever have a chance to attack.

I did it in a 2 stage run:
1) BossSlug
2) Elder Mist
3) Malkomud
4) Chromatic Apparition
5) Romaya
6) Botanical Horror
7) Dweller of Woe

Then repeated the first 3 on a secondary NG+. Didn't feel like slogging through Stormcaller section to maybe have trouble with him anyway.

Timmay's solution DOES work. You just need to start a NG+ based on your save from killing the first 7 bosses. I did this method but did 8 bosses first, then made a new NG+ based on that save and achievement popped after Elder Mist.

By Jazz Apples on 21 Jan 2024 16:39
I also went for an 8/2 strategy: I played up to including Stormcaller (who was a real pushover; he never even got to summon his sea monster), and then did NG++ up to Elder Mist. I wasn't going through the Docarri water palace as well as Torment Peak a second time. And yes, it's worth mentioning that one must start the NG++ on the basis of the NG+.

takes ~30 minutes (33 exactly for me) to do the first two bosses on the list. Just restarting NG+ 5 times and doing Slug + Mist only takes ~2 hours 45 minutes but it is very repetitive. Can definitely save you a few hours though.

Great guide. I also agree that it is best to just run through new game+ from start until you reach the Leaf Monster.
Restarting over and over for easy early boss fight is not worth it. It would be very painfully boring to go through the long prologue. Your characters' level are much higher than the normal enemies and bosses anyway, that means the attack or magic attack deals lots of damage, this makes the fight last very quickly. Removing 95% of health still does not make too difficult.

Interesting that the guide above mentioned killing the slug 10 times didn't work, but Eldarion got it to work by killing the first 7/10 bosses and then the first 3/10 of those a second time and it did work?

ICE, did you save after Bosslug and start a full fresh NG+ each time?

@DenverMax27 thanks I just added that to the list

I just copied all boss fights from the guide I used
That they classed as a boss fight but they may of hid that particular one as it was a potential spoiler
(well you had to click the thing to reveal the name)

I was hoping to get this from scratch on NG+ earlier than the leaf boss, but it seems a lot of boss-like encounters aren't actually bosses. It took around 4 hours.

Just a question, the relic must be turned on consecutively or if I beat one boss with the relic off it doesn't count and reset the counter?

It doesn't need to be consecutive. I missed one and defeated a late one and it popped fine.

I’ve heard you can recycle NG+ over and over, beating both the BossSlug and Elder Mist 5 times each as opposed to getting through 10 bosses normally. This is meant to take around half the time - can anyone verify that this works?

I turned on the Amulet of Storytelling and Guardian Aura relics too to give me a few extra hit points because I suck at timing blocks.

takes ~30 minutes (33 exactly for me) to do the first two bosses on the list. Just restarting NG+ 5 times and doing Slug + Mist only takes ~2 hours 45 minutes but it is very repetitive. Can definitely save you a few hours though.

These are the 10 bosses I defeated with the Artful Gambit Relic on and unlock the 'What a technique' achievement. The three items I used the most are the Magic Pocket, the Reaper's Mercy and the Blue Leaf.

0:00 Elder Mist (2nd fight)
13:42 Romaya (2nd fight)
24:42 Croustalion
29:00 Sea Slug
38:27 LeJugg
44:51 Phase Reaper
53:04 Elysan'darëlle
1:04:38 Fleshmancer
1:13:12 Bosslug (NG+)
1:14:01 Elder Mist (NG+)

Note:

- If you start using this relic after defeating the Dweller of Dread, as I did, you will have to start a New Game Plus (NG+) until you reach the Elder Mist to unlock this achievement.

- If you don't want to start a NG+, you can obtain the relic after defeating the Triumvirate of Eminence. According to other players, you can still talk to Seraï to obtain Joce's Belt Buckle (I'm not sure if you can defeat the Gun Goddess before this point. Anyway, talk to Seraï before beating the game, or you will have to start a NG+). These are the 10 bosses: The Catalyst, Dweller of Dread, Elder Mist (2nd fight), Romaya (2nd fight), Croustalion, Sea Slug, LeJugg, Phase Reaper, Elysan'darëlle and Fleshmancer.

- If you choose to turn on the relic when starting a NG+, you will need to defeat bosses up to and including the Leaf Monster.

Good tip for getting this without needing to start a New Game +, worked for me.

You can defeat the Gun Goddess when you go for the relic early but I decided to reload my save and leave her until after Serai asks you to deal with her in case it messed with getting the final story for Teaks.

VERY IMPORTANT: Achievements are tracked per save file, so make sure you base your subsequent NG+ from the NG+ where you had killed the bosses from your first run if you are doing the bosses in two separate playthroughs. This will ensure the achievement progress is carried over..

You can obtain Artful Gambit some what early late game:

The first 10 bosses are listed below:
1. Bosslug (Forbidden Caverns)
2. Elder Mist (Elder Mist Trials)
3. Malkomud (Wind Tunnel Mines)
4. Chromatic Apparition (Abandoned Wizard's Lab)
5. Romaya (Necromancer's Lair)
6. Botanical Horror (Haunted Mansion)
7. Dweller of Woe (Haunted Mansion)
8. Stormcaller (Maelstrom Point)
9. Dweller of Torment (Torment Peak)
10. Leaf Monster (Autumn Hills)

The Prologue takes about 20 mins while skipping dialogue with RB + A.

This achievement could be a little buggy, but double check the Artful Gambit is turned on before all bosses listed above. I had to complete 13 bosses from the list before it unlocked for me. But I also had issues with a story achievement.

In game achievement tracker is located on the Verspertine, it's the book near the stairs below deck.

You can just beat the first 5 bosses (romaya is n.5), then create two save files and start a ng+ on one of this two save. This will start a sort of ng++ with less hp but all rings you collect from ng+, so 3 leeching thorn (wich restore ALL hp with basic attack) for all 3 characters. Super easy

The Artful Gambit relic is found quite late in the game during Serai's end-game side-quest. See Better off dead (30G) for more info on where it is located. This relic removed 95% of your health, but drops all damage done to 1HP if you perform a perfectly timed block and doubles the damage you do on a perfectly timed attack. Essentially, you must perform perfectly in battle or be killed in one hit every time. None of the other relics in the game will void your progress toward this achievement, so be sure to leave on all the helpful ones, especially Sixth Sense which gives a 35% chance to auto-block attacks which can trigger if you miss your timing. Equipping the accessory Reaper's Mercy will leave you with 1HP if an attack would normally kill you, giving you an extra miss of a perfect block as well.

Once you have this relic, you can begin working on the achievement during your first playthrough if you'd like, but as I pointed out in the Road Map, it's much less stressful to simply hold off and do the entirety of it during a NG+ playthrough. Do keep in mind that it is cumulative though, so if you defeat the few bosses left in the game during your first playthrough, you'll only need to defeat the remaining few from the list below. These are the ten bosses that count from the beginning of the game until the achievement will unlock:

  • Bosslug (Forbidden Caverns)
  • Elder Mist (Elder Mist Trials)
  • Malkomud (Wind Tunnel Mines)
  • Chromatic Apparition (Abandoned Wizard's Lab)
  • Romaya (Necromancer's Lair)
  • Botanical Horror (Haunted Mansion)
  • Dweller of Woe (Haunted Mansion)
  • Stormcaller (Maelstrom Point)
  • Dweller of Torment (Torment Peak)
  • Leaf Monster (Autumn Hills)
This should take you about four hours of game time to complete, and almost zero effort. You will likely be killing most of these bosses in one hit since you'll be a very high level and have all the best equipment (be sure to re-equip everyone who joins your party). You can use rb.png+button-a.png to speed through dialogue, and hold button-b.png to skip any cinematics to speed up the story. This should be the only achievement you have left while in NG+ so just sticking to the main story and not needing to explore any of the maps, you'll be done in no time.

This is the last and most tedious trophy of the game, as you need to defeat 10 bosses by using the worst relic of the game. Artful Gambit will cut your HP by 95% and will make the enemies invincible while casting. The good part, is that if you manage to block an attack, the damage will be only 1 HP and you can equip any other relics to make things easier.

First of all, you have to find the Artful Gambit relic. The relic is located in the area where you fight the Gun Goddes. See Better off dead trophy_silver.png description under New Garl + trophy_silver.png to find the location.

Once you find the relic, you can chose how to get the trophy. In the roadmap, there is a list of many ways to get it. However, the easiest way i found to get this trophy, is by starting a New Game+ and equip the relic anytime you're near a boss. Play the game until you reach the fight with the Stormcaller and once defeated, save the game and start another New Game+ using the same savefile.

Now, defeat the first two bosses again and you should get this trophy and the platinum.

The relic is located in the “Throne of the Forgotten Queen” location; you will find it when you complete the additional quest for the battle with the Goddess of Cannons.
In NG+, use your save and immediately activate the “Cunning Gambit” relic with all the others except the “Dubious Call” relic, which increases damage taken by 40%.
Playing NG+ with the Tricky Gambit activated is fairly easy, provided you already have the best gear.
The Leaf Monster boss will drop a trophy.

If, on your first playthrough, you immediately get into the “Azure Wasteland” into the “throne of the forgotten queen” and try to kill several bosses on this playthrough, you can shorten your ng+, for me such bosses were the intermediate bosses in Flashmancer’s castle: the guy with a saw from his hand and the robot with scythe and two copies of itself. The first one is very easy with the Tricky Gambit relic, the second one will make you sweat a little, it's all about the timing of his scythe swings. In general, having killed only the first, the trophy falls when defeating the Sower of Suffering, and if you kill the second, then during a skirmish with the Second and Fourth on the Ice Mountain than in the usual situation with the “Leaf Monster”. This will speed up the ng+ process by 1-2 depending on the pace of the game

It’s strange that no one has written yet, but there is a way faster than 5-6 hours of replaying.
In the first playthrough, it is enough to collect the relic itself and calmly finish the game without bothering with killing the final bosses.
Having completed the passage, we begin a New Game+ from the last save. We immediately turn on the “Cunning Gambit” relic. We kill the slug and defeat the Ancient Mist. Let's save. We have 2 killed bosses with the Tricky Gambit relic, 35 minutes of wasted time and 0 effort, because these enemies won’t even have time to attack you.
Now we create a New Game+ from the last save after defeating the Ancient Mist and repeat the procedure.
Total 5 races of 35 minutes and 0 effort.
The trophy is yours.

The trophy is apparently glitchy, because in the main company I killed 8 bosses (Lou Zhugg, Spectral Reaper, Erlina, Euforul from Flashmancer's fortress, Sea Slug from Dokari ruins, the second paradise killed Romaya, the Queen of Cannons and killed the Ancient Mist for the second time). According to the idea, the trophy should have fallen on NG plus during the battle with the Giant Slug, or at least on the ancient fog if the Golem is not considered a boss at the beginning. In general, the trophy dropped after I killed the boss after I came to the city of Breeze.
If anyone is interested in playing against bosses with this relic and not running through ng+ with one hit, here’s how I proceeded. Be sure to put the Reaper's Mercy ring on the characters (with a lethal blow, if the characters have more than 50% HP, they do not die but remain in one hit point) with the gambit turned on, any missed blow will be lethal and the characters will always have more than ten HP for the effect to work. I also put a silver ring on Vallerie that restores 10% of HP from damage and this healed her completely. One character can always be on the field. Also, don’t skimp on using a lunar shield so that you can survive another blow if the boss hits with a single attack, this will also make your life easier and you won’t have to learn timings. Give Serai a ring that gives +1 to mana or -1 to the cost of spells so that you can use disorientation as often as possible when bosses cast spells. Don't rush to waste combos. Sometimes it can be useful to effectively disrupt a cast. But if you choose the right moment, it’s better to use the Arson combo (3 units of the Zeil Ri-Shan combo), it gives a lot of damage if you control the tornado, I consistently had 600-800 damage. On the big bosses there are even more than a thousand. And Ri-Shan’s best super blow is if he steals anything and works like Serai’s Disorientation so that there is more time to recover and deal damage. Living Mana - it’s better to have two consistently on the field, the third on CD can be used when attacking. But no one forbids charging all three spheres at a well-chosen moment and hitting harder. But I played it safe.
Another must-have relic could be a magic pocket. Allows you to use food once a round without wasting a turn. I consistently cooked food with mana so that I could again use Serai’s skill, and if other characters didn’t have enough, with rare exceptions, I gave them mana, but such cases were few. I also had a couple of pieces of resurrection food with me, just in case, but spoiler, it wasn’t useful.
Of the bosses in the main game, I found the spectral reaper a little difficult, because he summons copies of himself and attacks at the same time. And Euforul was stuffy. It took me a while to get the hang of the extra step.

Yes, this trophy is really strange and apparently the kill only counts certain bosses, in the main game I killed 1 boss with a relic and on ng plus it turns out 9 it was the boss Dweller of Torment (Gorilla which), the trophy fell on him.
