The first 3 Chaos Emeralds you'll obtain are in the first level 'Toxic Cave'. The level is fairly simply in that you need to get to 3 different areas and hit certain objects to then be able to obtain all 3 of the Chaos Emeralds. For a quick guide see below.

• First you'll need to launch Sonic up to the top left/right sections and hope that he hits the button at the top corner to drain the toxic waste out of the Chaos Emerald tank. Once that's done, the 2 pipes in the midsection will now be accessible.
• You'll now need to either head through either pipe which will send you to the left or right of the level. It doesn't matter which one as both are the same just reversed.
• Once you're either side, you'll first want to try and put the red and white looking lever which will open up a new section of the mine-cart tracks that run through the centre.
• You'll then want to send Sonic up the single pipe to the side 3 times to break the barrels then a 4th time to get him up to the highest part. Once you're up here, shoot Sonic into the pipe which will land him into the mine-cart.
• You now have a choice of sending Sonic left or right. The final destination will be determined if you've pulled both switches and used the bumpers to help change his direction. Once you've reached the bottom of either the left or right side you'll smash through a door and grab 1 of the Chaos Emeralds. Now repeat the process to grab the 2nd.
• For the final Chaos Emerald, you'll need to let Sonic fall past the bumpers in one of the 2nd areas. If done in the right place, he'll land inside a toxic waste barrel. Whatever side you took, simply direct Sonic to the right or left towards that container where the 1st Chaos Emerald was that you could see from the 1st area. Once you're close enough, jump out of the barrel and collect it.
