How to unlock the Congratulations! achievement in Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World - Definitive Guide

There are reports out there that this achievement is glitchy, but I did not have a problem unlocking it. One rumor is that you need to beat Monster Land in one credit (save states allowed) to complete it. Otherwise just make sure you play the games in order and that you see a pink saving icon somewhere during the end sequence. It may pop up right as you kill the final boss or during the credits, but don't back out of the game you just completed until you see that pink icon in the upper right corner. Some people say to force the pink icon by pressing the back button during the credits, but remember that the icon signifies both saving and loading and I think it's just loading when you do that. Could be worth a shot if you're having trouble, though.

The achievement popped for me immediately after I delivered the final blow to the final boss of Monster World IV.

If the achievement does glitch, you should keep a save state somewhere around the final boss of each game and then delete the system data and possibly the game, then go back in and beat each final boss in order (making sure you see that pink icon) and it should pop then. If not, you may have to start over on each.

Hmmm gonna try to one credit run Monster World and see if I can confirm that. Just finished all three and it didn't pop. Gotta get used to the more rigid controls again lol.

Yeah, it really stinks how glitchy or vague this achievement is. Was looking forward to landing on the ten first completed lists for a game finally. Very disappointing, especially given the time it takes to play through all three games.

Well, I finished my One-Credit run just now with Monster Land and it popped, so I'm thinking that is a likely reason for it "glitching out" (I apologise for getting the game wrong in the previous comment. Slightly confusing for me lol).

Popped straight after I killed the Dragon.

I just want to comment on those who have not gone for this achievement - in Wonder Boy In Monster World, when you deal with the Sphinx's 5 questions, do NOT save after every question on the same file! For some odd reason, when i did this and got the last question right he said "oops, you got only one question right - you lose." and I died.

Confirming as well that you need to one credit Monster Land to get this to pop-up. :/

ok what exactly is a "credit"

because i fail to see how anyone can beat this game in one life legit... i'm on level 11 and it's taken me around 5 hours to get this far due to save stating

One Credit = 1 Life if I remember right (Been a long time since I played lol). It is doable but requires plenty of practise and perfect use of Save States. And it helps if you got the Ruby from the side quest, where you deliver various items to various (mostly hidden) locations. The Ruby drastically cuts down the time it takes to defeat the final boss.

It also helps to get Medicine whenever you can and always try to top up your health. By the time you reach the final stage, if you have done very very well, you'll have max health and hopefully a medicine on hand. Saving states in the final stage is a must owing to the nature of the level, and you'll likely find yourself trying to make a map. Of course you could cheat a bit and look at a map or guide. Takes the challenge out of it but it will save a lot of time for you.

I remember that by the time I took on the final boss, I had... I think 6 hearts left. Was quite challenging but I finally did it lol.

Does game settings matter such as setting starting life heart count?

I can confirm the belief that you need to beat Monster Land without dying, the first time I went through the game, I died a few times it did not autosave after I beat the game, but when I went through it without dying, it did autosave.

just finished my 1 credit run on wonderboy in monsterland, and didn't see a pink icon, neither when I killed the final boss (second form) nor during the credits... I kept a few save right before delivering the final hit, in case something glitched. While hoping that it will still count, when I'll be done with the other two games...

I haven't seen any auto-save icon either after completing each game. Btw I didn't finish the games in the "proper" order (first-third-second), anyways... I've created (multiple, just to be sure) manual saves during the credits for each game, minus the second one (which I completed for last, having a save right during the boss fight). The achievement popped as soon as the credits started rolling. I can also confirm, as stated above, that you can use custom settings in the first game (i.e., 5 hearts instead of the default 4). I've used a potion during the final boss fight, so that also confirms that potions don't void the 1 credit run (if anyone had doubts about it).

Okay, so has anyone out there besides OP gotten the achievement without beating the first game on one credit? Is it at all possible for this to unlock "normally"?

back when I was checking guides for this game, I noticed that the consensus (even outside TA) is that a 1 credit run on WB In Monsterland is mandatory for unlocking the achievement.

Because I've completed the first game with a 1 credit run, before playing the other games, I can't personally confirm that this is the case, so take it with a grain of salt.

What I can say, is that the auto-save system (post-game completion) is kind of buggy, as I reported I had to save manually after completing each game (the pink icon never appeared during the credits).

Apologies for not being able to give you a definitive answer to your question. Bear in mind that a 1 credit run is far from impossible, as long as you abuse the save system.

I appreciate the reply! I'll give it a try and see if I can try some things to get the achievement to unlock the right way. If not, I will do the one credit run, even if I don't like it (I made some progress before learning about the wiggle technique to get a ton of coins and I found it pretty challenging). I'll report back if I find anything groundbreaking.

If anyone out there has managed to unlock the achievement without the one credit run, I'd love to know to see if it's possible!

I also could not get the achievement despite having finished all three games...until I replayed monster land from the beginning and finished it with one credit.... achievement unlocked!

To add to what Jorax said here is a video of the how to unlock the Sound Test in game and the Magic Merchant. Who sells the Legendary Sword and Shield, along with a special Debug Armour that can be used to summon Pepe and change his level.

Video is of the Japanese version but works fine on the English release.

Sounds very straight forward and for the most part it is. Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV you just need to get to and defeat the final boss. However Wonder Boy in Monster Land you must do without using any continues (you can save state as much as you like though). With all three of them to make sure they count, when viewing the credits (or when back at the main menu after the credits) press the back button. You should see a pink memory card looking thing and a line spinning around it. If it does that, it counted. If not then it didn't.

This is not a full solution, just a helpful tip for Monster World IV. Follow the information here to get early access to the Legendary Sword, Legendary Shield, and Debug Armor (which has 15 hearts/health): http://tcrf.net/Monster_World_IV.

Basically get through the first dungeon without talking to the Save Old Man (using/abusing save states is fine!). When you reach the city (Rapaganda) talk to the Palace guards and go inside. From there head to the far right and jump up and over the wall - do not go inside the palace and talk to the queen. If you did the above (don't talk to Save Old Man or Queen) there is a debug shop hidden in the second group of bushes (keep moving a little and pushing up until you find him). Just talking to the shop guy gives you 9999 gold (repeatable) and he offers the 3 items mentioned above. Makes for a fairly painless trip through MW4.
