How to unlock the You are a True Hero achievement in Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World - Definitive Guide

There are four pieces of Legendary equipment to obtain. Swords are earned through optional boss battles. Armor, Shield, and Shoes are all purchased from shops.

SWORD

Kill Vampire in Round 2 (last door in the cave) to earn the Broad Sword. Stay in somewhat close so Vampire ignores his fireball attacks and charges at you with his body.

Kill Kong in Round 5 (press UP on the right side of the third raised piece of ground just before the Armor shop) to get the Great Sword. Kong's tough. Rush at him to kill him. If he throws a rock, then time your jump so that you can quickly avoid the exploding fragments it releases.

Kill Poverty (5th door at the start of the stage) in Round 7 to win Excalibur. Poverty's accompanied by some red ghosts. Dispatch them then work on Poverty, avoiding contact so you don't lose money. He's pretty simple.

Kill Demon (press UP on the 2nd floating, stationary platform while you work you work down in the second part) in Round 8 to obtain the Sword of Legend. He's not too bad; just use hit-and-run tactics, retreating when the fireballs expand and attacking when they close in. You can also leap in as they move out, too, to attack, just be careful when they retract.

ARMOR

Light buy for 60 gold.
Knight buy for 150 gold.
Heavy buy for 100 gold.
Hard buy for 360 gold.
Legend buy for 540 gold.

SHIELD

Light buy for 40 gold.
Knight buy for 120 gold.
Hard buy for 250 gold.
Legend buy for 360 gold.

SHOES

Cloth buy for 50 gold.
Leather buy for 80 gold.
Ceramic buy for 180 gold.
Legend buy for 380 gold.

Note that Heavy armor is better than Knight armor and also cheaper, so don't bother purchasing Knight armor when you first encounter it.

There are plenty of shops in the game, but if you wait too long to start buying stuff, you may run out of chances to upgrade. Since shops only offer you the next two upgrades when entering and close up shop when you make a purchase, you can't simply hoard money thinking you'll just grab the high end stuff once you've saved enough.

Money is stashed in lots of secret places. If you find that you never have enough gold to upgrade before entering the final stage, then consider consulting the guide below, which tells you where all the secret money spots are. Also, it helps to map the JUMP and SHAKE STICK actions to a single button such as Y so that you can press that to quickly exploit these hidden deposits for even more gold.

There's a random chance to earn equipment from killing an enemy. You likely had Excalibur and got lucky with a sword drop. Weapon and armor drops are possible but nothing I'd count on during a playthrough.

I grabbed the Legendary Boots as early as Chapter 2 from a shop. Also if you need help with "The Wiggle" the game's own How To Play section has a very valuable tip: You can map any button to perform an ultra-fast wiggle that never fails to nab the extra coinage.

First off, go to your control settings and map the “waggle” to a button you can comfortably press after jumping. After that use the waggle to jump through hidden coins. If you do it right you will get 60+ gold from every coin. Its best to save before going through each one just in case you mess it up. Whist you are going through the game doing this stop off at every armour, shield and shoe shop and buy the most expensive available. It will eventually be the Legendary you buy.

To get the sword (which will probably be the last thing you need for the achievement you need to kill the hidden bosses in the game. They are as follows
Vampire - round 2 - broad sword
Kong - round 5 - great sword
Poverty - round 7 - excalibur
Demon - round 8 - Sword of legend

Once you get your last piece you will get the achievement.
