How to unlock the That's a Knife! achievement in Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Definitive Guide

There are two upgrades for the knife.

1. A female merchant in the main market place of the hidden city. (When you reach the hidden city you follow the woman and her child through the town, you will walk straight through the market, in this market there are TWO sellers not just one. The female seller has a knife upgrade_

2. A side mission in the hidden city. Once you cross the guarded bridge in a disguise (in a main story mission) you will meet a small boy who tells you about his friend who needs help with her father. This gives you a side mission where you have to free the man from a prison cell. Once you free him, he offers you a knife upgrade.

I think there’s a possible glitch here. I bought the reinforced knife from the merchant lady who doesn’t appear on the map as an icon. After completing the game I went back and rescued Hakan and he gave me the finely crafted knife but no achievement. Also checked the merchant in the market who is supposed to sell it but no joy.

Got it yesterday just did the Hakan mission again on Game plus

I had no issue with it. After saving Hakan, I went to the female merchant , after doing several missions, and purchased the knife upgrade---popped immediately.

I have everything and still no achievment. Gonna try again on the + run i will make next.

There's definitely a bug here, I saw a couple of threads of people with the same issue in the Steam forums of the game, hopefully it can be addressed in a patch, I loved the game but I don't really feel like playing it all over again just for an achievement…

Yup weirdly have a reinforced knife but after completing game I now can't cut through braided rope.. ah well, maybe the knife stopped working lol

Have been to the female merchant multiple times but the only things she offers me are the usual stuff like the herbs , scrap or pelts. No knife upgrades.

I logged into the game yesterday after buying the upgrade and doing the side quest weeks ago, and the achievement popped and I have the knife++ now. No idea what happened.

Man, I wish that would happen to me, just tried but no luck, the achievement's still not unlocking. Oh well.

EDIT: Nevermind, it took a couple minutes but I have it now, sweet, if anyone else had the bug you should try again, good luck!

Odd. I saved them in the side quest and got no upgrade. Went to the merchant and no knife available

I think I have missed this, have been to the merchant but she does not have any weapon upgrades and i have also done save the prisoner mission did not get the upgrade.

It does say on the the map 1 have 1 mission to do 10/11 but when i check side mission they all have a line and tick on them.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, there are two upgrades you can obtain for the knife. 

The first of these upgrades can be purchased from one of the two merchants in the market square of Paititi. It will cost 2,900 gold. The second upgrade is obtained by Hakon after rescuing him during the "Rescue Hakon" side mission in the upper city region of Paititi.

You will receive the second upgrade for completing a side quest in the Secret City

You can upgrade your knife in any order. Personally, I first completed the side quest (which is mentioned above), and then bought the next upgrade from the merchant in the Secret City of Paititi, and the trophy dropped!

The first improvement will become available from the merchant in the second city.
The second upgrade is unlocked after completing a side quest in the second city.
