How to unlock the The Way of Masamune achievement in Shadow Warrior 2 - Definitive Guide

bigsmok3r`s solution works well, but since I do not like those trials up on the hill very much and kept failing from time to time, I ended up using another (solo) farming method for those masamune marbles:
I started up free roam on the sidemission-map "Heisenberg 3". Check if the "Lord of War"-Miniboss is nearby, easiest done with hitting the select-button (whatever that`s called now, I tend to forget that) to bring up a bigger map.
Look around a bit and if you do not find the big red skull in a spot that you can reach in about 10 seconds from your spawn just start free roam again.
As soon as you find a good spawn with the boss nearby bring him down and you`ll get 27 marbles (Insanity 1 difficulty). Pause the game and from there go back to the main menu. Load up the save again and you will spawn at the same spot with the boss nearby, as long as you do not start another mission or free roam. Kill boss, back to main menu, load up, repeat.

The boss spawns three tumors when he goes down to his knees the first time. I used two shotguns (Purgator with poison and Boner with electricity) and the "Arm of Orochi"-Sword with ice, but whatever works for you will do.
Crit chance & damage will help obviously and I enhanced shadow fury as well.
The 27 marbles will drop every time, even without any %-items for more drops. Killing the boss took me 2.5 minutes in the end with all loading times, but that was with level 160 and all relevant skills maxed.
If it takes you to long to kill him you can also try out free roam in mission "Flirty Fishing 1". The boss there I could kill in about 2 minutes (including loading times) with ease, because he doesn`t go to his knees and spawns no helpers.
But the drop rate for the marbles is much lower, about 50% I think. I have not tried other free roams, but it is possible that you can find a better suited boss on a different one.

Useful hint 1: As you level up you get access to higher difficulty levels (up to insanity 7). While it`s not useful to crank it up for the killing process (bosses drop more marbles, but you`ll encounter more immunities on enemies which will be a hassle to deal with), you can easily exploit it for better weapon-upgrades: Before loading your save hit RB, then choose the highest insanity level available. After loading up just go to the forge and start crafting, you`ll get much better upgrades. After you are done with crafting you can just quit out back
to main menu, change the difficulty back down and enjoy better weapons.

Useful hint 2: Probably known by many, but I just dicovered it when I was nearly done: You can cancel out of shadow fury, just press the d-pad down again, you can save some fury with that.

At which point does the Heisenberg 3 side mission become available?

Ooops, did not notice your comment. The three Heisenberg-quests become available near the end of the game.

Has anyone tried running this on an SSD? I'm wondering how much it helps load times, and if it does anything for that damn checkpoint freezing.

I'm liking the mini-boss on "Stop the Propaganda." I haven't even cleared the mission. The mini-boss was on the radar when I started it, so I figured why not. Works. He only spawns like 2 Herculons and you can ignore the random drones flying around. I wanted to use those bitch robots in Heisenburg 3, but there's a stupid checkpoint statue right where you fight them to fuck you over. If you could lure them away form it far enough to collect without tripping the checkpoint, you can get double the orb drops every time.

Another little tip for farming via mini-boss. Use whatever difficulty you can kill it without fury. Then every time you save with a full fury meter (pretty much every other load), load it a couple insanity levels higher. Like I'm jumping back and forth between insanity 2 and 4 right now. I use the Fury meter to wipe it out on the higher difficulty. Then jump back to the lower to refill.

The hint about getting better mods by crafting them on Insanity 7 is fantastic. I think the strategy of running the Trials is better than farming this boss (trial takes me less than 2.5 minutes each time), but the tip for mods is top notch! +1

Heisenberg III was my pick. The lava pits in trials were annoying, and for some reason the mini boss in Stop the Prop didn't respawn consistently. If only the load times weren't 1½ min every time... Ugh.

Remember to spend the orbs to buff your weapons and gems. You aren't required to hold 10k at one time.

Thanks for the tips. +1'd both guides.

Good tips here!
For anyone wondering, the ‘select’ button is called View, and the ‘start’ is Menu

Anyone has an idea why I'm suddenly getting negative votes four years after posting this?

There is no reason for negative votes. It's best to ignore them because sometimes asking will bring more votes.

@I am JeffRay90 this is the way. I am getting 104 orbs a run and as long as I maintain my shadow fury for the first fight with the belly and then the boss fight, it takes between 2-4 minutes with a 1000 DPS Arm of Orochi.

I upvoted the solution. The "Heisenberg 3" is by far the best side mission to grind for the orbs. I would highly recommend not to "turn in/complete" the side mission. Rather use the opportunity to grind out the side mission's exclusive bosses which is against (Kyoko & Kagami in Mechs). At insanity I, they each drop a guaranteed of 27 orbs for a total of 54. Once you defeat (Kyoko & Kagami), go back to Dragon Mountain. DO NOT SPEAK TO MEZU as this will complete the quest. Instead, open the map and abandon the "Heisenberg 3". That way you can restart the mission and grind out Kyoko,Kagami, and even "Lord of War" again for a total of 81 orbs per run. Increasing insanity will increase the orbs drop by 5 for each boss. So insanity 1 =27 orbs per boss, insanity 2 = 32 orbs per boss, and so on. I typically avoided "Lord of War" as (3x) tumor minions have 3 immunity periods (75%,50%,and 25% HP) due to their animations. If your gear is mediocre, it is recommended to have armor that has "Life drain" capabilities in addition to saving your shadow of fury rage for Kyoko and Kagami . You can solo them both in less than 20 seconds with "Arm of Orochi (A guaranteed drop at the second to last main story line - Violent Takeover)". Sometimes you can get lucky with rage statues that spawn around the map. If you have the appropriate gear and maxed out shadow of fury card, you can get unlimited rage with a trick... (Just before defeating the boss or a high rank/large demon (ex. Belly) turn off shadow of fury. Finish off the boss or high ranking minion without shadow of fury activated and your rage meter will go up. I found myself with max rage every run once I mastered the timing. (Turn on Shadow of fury -->Deal massive damage to boss/large minion but do not defeat them. Keep the boss low enough to be defeated within 1 to 3 swings/shots, -->Deactivate "Shadow of Fury". --> Then finish the low health boss to get more rage. For me, I was averaging (1500-1600) orbs per an hour (includes all loading screen time as I was playing on cloud) just farming Kyoko & Kagami at Insanity I. I played through all the variations of the calamity town map . The best map variation is when you spawn at the town/village. You can literally get 54 orbs in a minute.

Ok so if you're here your in for the long run cause I gotta say this is a very grindy achievement.
My first advice would be to go through the campaign have fun and whatnot collecting as many relics and runes as you can because my method involves having a strong character. Play on insane and put your game on Public so you can have randoms jump in or some good friends if you have any who have the game. If your by yourself and don't feel your strong enough, Jump in an online game on insane and within an hour or two you'll be ready.
Anyway I spent about 25 hours having a blast playing with randoms, Getting stronger, Looking for the secrets (Pain in the ass btw) and trying to get these Orbs as quick as I could.
It felt like it would take forever until I jumped into a Co-op on a Trial. Basically these guys raped it in like 5 mins, So I had 27 Orbs a lot faster than I was getting.
Now here's the way I found to get 27 in TWO minutes!!!
This is my setup

Skills - Life Mastery, Overheal, Call for Medic, Touch of Healer, Shadow Fury, Like the wind, Healing Flame, Chi Mastery, Serene Mind, All 8 Elemental skills maxed, Karma Harvester. Any points you have after upgrading these put on whatever you like.
Skills are dropped randomly and given through completing certain missions!!

Armour slots - Crit damage/chance (same gem) All 3 slots
Amulet slot - Ninja touch (Melee 30% Damage)
Power slots - ALL THREE SHADOW FURY DAMAGE/DURATION VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
Multiplayer slot - Co-op player damage

Now your weapon
Blade of Exile - First slot most powerful Electric rune you have (Mine is Lvl98 Spirit of juice)
Second and third slot - Crit Damage/chance same gem.
I used a second sword for immune enemies to electric which is "Ryuken" set the same but with Toxic instead.
Using this setup my DPS is 850 and I melt everything but once Shadow fury is activated It becomes a joke as in 1350 DPS joke LOLOL.

Now go up to the Trial area and choose "Trial of Purification II" and kill a few enemies to get your Shadow Fury full and just unleash beastmode on those Mofo's. The thing about this map is there isn't any lava and there is plenty of space to run incase you get overwhelmed. Plus once you have some people in with you it will go much quicker. I was at 3000 odd Orbs before doing this method and 2 days later I got the achievement.
Good luck and I hope this helps someone get this grindfest of an achievementtoast
UPDATE- FOXDVD has shared a very good trick below in the comments!

At two minutes per 27 orbs that's still like just over 12 hours of grinding. Man this achievement sucks! I don't think they are gonna improve on ways to get this nasty orbs.

Yeah it's a grind but there doesn't seem to be a faster way, If someone has a better way to get them I'll update the solution.

How do you get 850 on your blade of exile lol. I only have Soul of Juice which is lvl 70 something but can't more than 210 dps on this weapon.

Lol you need critical chance and damage on the same gem in the 2 slots and melee damage with crit chance or damage in the 1 or 2 of the armour slots, All of my gems are LVL 90-100, Try playing Insane +3 with random for a few hours, The higher the difficulty the better the loot, also focus on using your Orbs on upgrading Blade of exile only, I wasted a lot of Orbs upgrading other weapons slowing the process.

The game doesn't save until a checkpoint but the achievement tracker does, So you just keep killing the boss enemy and quitting out doing the save exploit, Hope that helpsdance

Ratpoizen shit I totally forgot you can add another gem to your sword after you complete the trials and putting criticals on there will boost its damage a lot!

Yeah I added fourth gem slot to the Blade of Exile. But its DPS is 267 and damage about 100. I can't put same rune/gem into all slots because I only have one of each type. lol Am i missing something? I am lvl60. :)

I think you have to play a bit longer Lol, It's all to do with critical damage bonus and chance, do you have NINJA TOUCH gem 30% melee? And in your armour slots you need critical gems too, That's what gets it higher trust me lol

By bigsmok3r on 18 Jun 2017 10:53
bigsmok3r yeah i have Ninja Touch, always had that inserted coz I only use melee weapons 90% of the time. But I've never had (or rarely) had duplicate gems. You mention putting exact same ones into different slots. In my armour slots I have put all 3 as critical chance or critical bonus but the gems have different names, not the same gem. :)

Yeah you get gems with say 130% crit damage bonus and 15% crit chance in one so 3 of those gems put your crit chance and damage at 400 and 45% plus putting those gems in your armour slots you'll be at nearly 1000% crit damage bonus, If you don't have them you may have ones with melee damage and crit chance - use those until you get better gems, when searching for games always check if there's a +3 or higher insane game going on to get those high rank gems or you'll get brick walled at your level

Oh right! I've only been playing Insanity 1 level. No ones seems to be playing at +2 or even +3. But didn't know you got even better gems on higher Insanity lvls. Thanks!

I'm curious as to why the electric rune. I wasn't even seeing enemies weak to electricity when I ran the trial. Is it just for stun effect?

About 70% of the enemies were weak to electricity on my game, I don't know if everyones game is unique but try and pick whichever gem your seeing the most weaknesses with, then just swap around to compensate, Hope that helps man

Just to give a quick update the save file exploit suggested by @FOXDVD does not work on Xbox. By recovering your save recover your checkpoint AND all character progress, which voids the purpose of doing it in the first place. Bummer.

Add Dark Wanderer to the skills you should upgrade. Reduces the amount of fury you need. Also, the Vortex ability is gold against all the enemies that surround you.

Not sure if saves work the same way as ps4...but what I did on my ps4.

Your character saves are different than your profile saves. Orb totals are saved to your profile. My main character was high enough level to do insanity 3. Main missions reward 70 ish orbs. I made a save right before turning in a mission. With your other two characters start an insanity 1 run, and also play up until you get ready to turn in a mission. These two profiles will get 52 orbs each Upload all three character saves to the cloud/usb but not the profile save.

Then turn the mission in for all three characters. This results in a quick 170-180 orbs. After quitting to the main menu after your third mission being turned in override your saves with the ones you have backed up and repeat. Once again, do not mess with your profile save file.

Total time for me on my ps4 pro with a solid state drive was about 1 minute and 30 seconds per run. I think most will need about 8000 orbs before they start this method, so thats 45-46 total runs or about 1.5 hours.

It will go even quicker if you have a higher level of insanity unlocked, or more than one character with higher insanity unlocked. Also, if the other two saves are low level characters and you struggle to get to a checkpoint, see if a friend will join with a higher level and power you through.

Hope this works on the xbox, because it worked like a charm on ps4.

Welcome, to the grind!

My personal recommendation is to play insane +3 either solo or with a public lobby and let people join.

ONLY do the main story missions, skipping the enemies if you don't have to kill them. Once you finish the story, start it up again and do it another time! Each mission will give 60-70 orbs I believe.

After finishing the game and getting all other trophies I needed 8000 more orbs. Here is what I did.

Have all three of your character profiles on the highest difficulty each can do. In my case I had two insanity 1 and one insanity 3. Get each character right up to the point where you are about to turn in a mission and save. Between all three characters if you are on the same difficulty I was that is over 170 orbs.

At this point back up your 3 character saves to the cloud. Do not back up the profile save, just the character saves. Don't ever mess with the profile save, this is what counts the number of orbs you have earned.

After you have backed up the saves....quickly turn in all three characters missions to get your orbs. After the third character, quit to the main menu and then download and override your saves with the ones you have backed up.

Repeat 45 more times and enjoy your platinum.

On my ps4 pro with a solid state drive it took about 1.5 minutes per run(over 170 orbs each run). I did not think of using all three character slots until the very end(at first I only used one save which gave me 72 per run). This method should take most about 1.5-2 hours to work. Even faster if you are higher level and can set up even higher missions.

Hopes this helps some get this VERY slow trophy out of the way..

Here's the method I used to farm orbs. Let me know if you have any suggestions or improvements to the method:

Mission "Stop Propaganda", enemy "Eradicator".

The mission consists of two small locations connected by a teleport, and its whole randomness lies in changing the location of the teleport - two options on the roof, one on the first floor and one on the second (appears very rarely, so it’s better to check last).

The enemy himself spawns in three places: in a square room on the third floor, on the roof or behind the teleporter (always standing near the broken hut); it takes about a minute to find him, and the fight itself takes about the same amount of time.

I loaded the Heisenberg 3 level in free mode, since it is generated randomly, selected the option so that the boss was nearby, and then did it as in the video . If a lantern spawns nearby, even better, since you can replenish ammo near it.
