Fiddling around with a katana is actually very inconvenient. You don’t just need to deflect the stick, but hold it, and for quite a long time, until the elementary attack is charged.
Alternatively, you can pump up your revolver, then when you fire quickly, it becomes hot and starts setting enemies on fire.
