During combat you'll see a percentage displayed above an enemy's health and armor. This percentage to hit is based on a variety of factors, including distance, cover, spells, etc. The easiest one to directly effect is your distance from a target. Whenever an enemy is far enough away from you – when their chance to hit is below 30% – focus on attacking them.
This is (possibly) most easily done during the flashback sequence at the start of the game. During this flashback now matter how much damage you take, you won't die.
Combat will start with 3 enemies on the left side of the map. Once those have been defeated, two more will show up from the right side, and then finally another two from the top of the map.
Once the encounter starts, you'll have control of three characters. Sam Watts, who has a sub machine gun and a shotgun. Sangoma, who has a machine gun and can summon a water spirit at the bottom left of the map. And yourself. Your arsenal will vary depending on your build. Using a pistol or Sam's shotgun will likely produce the best results, since they have the shortest range.
Position your team opposite the current group of enemies and continue to move further away until everyone has a sub 30% chance to hit a target. Once everyone is in position, you can start attacking.
