How to unlock the Devourer of Puppets achievement in Shadows: Awakening - Definitive Guide
For this you need to unlock 8 puppets for use in your party. Puppets are all the characters aside from the Devourer. You do not get 8 puppets through the story, but you pick up the rest from side quests and the like.
Chapter 1
Evia/Kalig/Jasker - Story related. You can only pick one.
Urshak - He's found in Hostel, when you check the bones here you'll get a quest (might be able to pick it up from the merchant above the cenotaph as well). You'll unlock this puppet when you finish the quest. Thole is quite different in chapter 6, so I'm not sure if this quest would still be possible. I would guess not.
Ironclad Golem - Story related.
Chapter 2
Zaar - You can recruit this puppet when you first meet him in the Bandit Camp by beating him in battle. You may be able to recruit him later if you avoid the fight, but I never tried that path.
Sebeken - Kill the Sebeken boss in Broken Spear Pass (the area is called Underground). This is probably story related because you need to rescue the girl, but I never tried skipping this boss.
Chapter 3
Thorn Wasp/Wood Elemental - When you leave the Border Camp you can go north to get the Wood Elemental, or go south for the Thorn Wasp. It's an either/or choice.
Chapter 4
Carissa - When you finish chapter 3, the very thing that happens in chapter 4 is you fight Carissa. When you win you get her as a puppet. Story related.
Darius/Falon - This is an either/or choice. By talking to Kiri in Fallen Eagle Fortress (or the girl in House of Eagle in Kyallisar) you get the quest that gives either soul, depending on the choices you make during it.
Chapter 5
Draconian/Shadowhand - This is an either/or choice. Shadowhand is a boss in Imperial Tombs V and VI. You need the bonekey from Imperial Tomb IV to enter V, and both to enter VI. When you beat Shadowhand in VI, he will offer to join your party, or you get the bonekey. If he joins your party, you don't get the bonekey and can't get the Draconian. As for the Draconian, you need all 3 bonekeys, then you enter VII and fight him there to recruit him.
Chapter 6
No puppets.

Plenty puppets to obtain this, on my playthrough i acquired 11.
At least 3 of these are story related 4 if you count the starter puppet from the beginning of the story, so you just need the rest from side quests.
Puppets i obtained:
Ironclad Zombie, Zaar, Carissa, Darius, Chromaton Golem, Urshak, Thorn Wasp,
Sebekan, Draconian, Necrophage and my starter Evia.

Explore everything and don’t miss it, the only thing you can do is screw up Zaar, be sure to show aggression towards him in the arena in Chapter 2, otherwise he won’t fight with you and you won’t get his soul

Zaar cannot be missed - this is a story character, you can miss it in the last locations of the game Draconian/Hand of the Shadow. If Zaar is not killed in the arena, then they will still give you this opportunity, just not to kill him right away, but to say that you went through the catacombs is necessary for bad karma in the game!
The lizard mage on the quest, at the pass of the broken spear is difficult to miss, there is the beginning of the quest with Kiri, and the rest of the minions are connected with the main storyline of the game!
Sequence for obtaining minions:
1. Ishkai, 2. Iron Golem, 3. Zaar, 4. Lizard Mage, 5. Wasp or Ancient, 6. Carissa, 7. Darius or Falona, 8. Hand of Shadow or Draconid
