For this achievement, you must have 2000 at ONE TIME. This shouldn't be too tough, as some higher level upgrades will be quite expensive. Just know that this is not cumulative.
Useful tip: You don't need to complete the current stage to keep any collected rings. They permanently add to your count upon pick up. This is good to keep in mind when going for higher ranks on a given level, as you can freely restart the stage over and over without worrying about losing ring progress.
