How to unlock the Gold Medal Challenge achievement in Shaun White Skateboarding - Definitive Guide
Downtown Quarter
Great white airtime challenge - Accumulate as much air time as possible within the time limit
-Bronze: 200, Silver: 400, Gold: 650
-All you must do is push up on the left-analog stick as you ascend through the bowl so that you gain a lot of air, and press A to jump or using the right stick to jump and do tricks seems to help.
Ministry Quarter
The great white flow - Generate as much flow as possible
-Bronze: 1000, Silver: 1500, Gold: 2500
-What I did was simply perform long grinding combos around the perimeter of the building. Alternatively you can use the vert ramps to gain a lot of points as well.
The Rising Island
The Great White Grind - Grind as far as possible within the time limit
-Bronze: 100, Silver: 200, Gold: 300
-Jump over the railing at the beginning and grind the power cable. At the end of this segment of the cable I accidentally fell down but the decided to try grinding the edge of the pool below. I actually recommend doing this- simply gain some speed and grind along the edge, maintaining your balance. Once you start to grind very slow, hop off and regain speed. With this method I finished with 25 seconds to spare.
Midtown Quarter
The great white time attack - Pass as many checkpoints as possible within the time limit
-Bronze: 10, Silver: 20, Gold: 30
You have two and a half minutes to pass through all 30 gates.
Just head straight for the first 4 gates. Round the corner and drop down, picking up #5 and #6. Continue straight for #7- then you must grind and hop on a series of ledges to reach #8. Jump on the U-shaped rail in front to turn around and pick up #9. Continue straight for #10, then turn right for #11. Turn left for #12 and continue straight for #13. Turn left and head straight for #14 and #15. Turn right for #16 and head straight for #17. #18 is right in front of you, then turn to your right for #19. Continue through the tunnel to get #20 and #21. #22 is in plain sight, as is #23-24. Turn left and jump on the shaping rail to direct it towards #25. Drop down for #26 and continue to #27. Jump on the right ledge in front of you and shape your way up to #28. Shape the next rail to #29 and then hop onto the left rail to grind towards #30. If you find yourself unable to complete the challenge in time, try using savior rails on the drops to conserve speed and save time.
Spoiler:
Once you complete them all, you unlock Shaun Island.
I love easy golds as much as an easy platinum and this is one easy gold. There are 4 Shaun White Challenges that open up after you beat the storyline of the game. Note that you can open up one early by using UPlay points that you get by playing the game. The challenges are easy as pie, but one or two of them might take a try or two. The challenges need to be opened with level 3 flow. Before you open them they look like large concrete blocks with the Ministry logo on them and a blue highlight around them.
- Midtown - The Great White Time Attack: This is the one that I had to do a few times before I got it. It's a checkpoint race and my best advice is just run it 2, 3, or 5 times and you will beat the gold requirement.
- Downtown - The Great White Airtime: I was kind of confused on this one because I kept pumping up and down the side of the bowl (hold left stick up) but that wasn't enough. You have to hit as soon as you are about to launch from the ramp as this gives the extra air you need to complete this.
- The Rising Island - The Great White Grind: This one also took me two tries. The area you start out on is a good grind but don't follow the roller coaster all the way down. Once you get on the grind get ready to jump off as the grind turns to the string lights above the pool. Grind as far as you can and once you are off the lights you can use either the pool or nearby shaping rails to get this done. I used the pool and I would start on the slight incline in the middle as going down that would give me more speed to get around the pool. Once you slow down get off and ride that little incline down again.
- Ministry Quarter - The Great White Flow: This one takes place on top of the Ministry building and it's not too hard as you can go on long grind combos around the building over and over again. NOTE that you will find one of the Treasure Chests you need to find on the side of the building.
There are a total of 4 Shaun White Challenges, and you must obtain a gold in each challenge. The challenges and locations are as follows:
Downtown - The Great White Airtime: Make sure you are using your speed burst to gain maximum momentum. If you feel an extra speed boost is needed, press at the top of the ramp to gain a little extra height.
Rising Island - The Great White Grind: I started by using the shaping rail on the rollercoaster at the beginning of the challenge. I shaped the rail to the upper parts of the rollercoaster. After getting to the top of the rollercoast, reverse paths and came back down. Rinse and repeat until you reach the gold medal. Keep in mind there are several different methods which will work for this challenge.
Midtown - The Great White Time Attack: Not much of a strategy to this one. The key is to memorize the path of the orbs. It may take a few tries until this one is unlocked.
Ministry Quarter - The Great White Flow: You can use one of two approaches to complete this challenge. I always found it easiest to gain flow by getting in a half-pipe. There are at least two good half-pipes on the roof, which are good for gaining flow. If you are better at grinding, there are plenty of good grinding spots on the roof also.
