Privateers are beefy and imposing enemy ships, which spawn periodically and look quite scary, indeed. They will attack you on sight, and they are often lurking near outposts, waiting to attack. Use your spyglass (click 
) and hold your crosshair over the enemy ship, and you will see a label pop up, marking it as a Privateer vessel. You will also see what you can gain by sinking said vessel – though the fight will be tough. (Make sure that you have armoured your ship and have upgraded your weapons.)
Once you have sunk the Privateer ship, this achievement will unlock.
