When you encounter the boss, don't panic. Just move your ship to the upper right corner and it will never be able to damage you on any of the difficult levels (tested normal, hard, insane & nightmare) - only works on the first phase though.

Genius find with being completely safe in the upper right corner. Would have never been able to do it without this cheese.
