How to unlock the Chao's Best Friend achievement in Sonic Adventure - Definitive Guide
This is the most time consuming part of the game when it comes to getting emblems. Be sure to save up lots of rings. Here is a guide on how I got my Chao strong enough. Listed below will show the steps I did to make my Chao strong, what Items and Animals I used, and what my Chao's stats were win it won it's races.
Helpful Items:
- Chao Fruit
- Mushrooms
- Gorillas
- Rabbits
- Otters
- Robin Type Bird(A long black looking bird with a red chest)
First of all, I saved up rings, so I could give my Chao "Chao Fruit." This fruit cost 200 Rings. It will give the chao a +1 to +2 for each stat for each bite it takes. When my Chao Evolved, it became a "Swim Type".
Second, I collected animals. I normally went to Emerald Coast a lot to collect rings and get Rabbits and Otters. The Otters will give you the most Swimming Points while the "Rabbit's" will give you the most "Run" Points.
Third, I went to Red Mountain. This is where I got all the "Power" animals. Gorillas are preferred, since they give you a lot of "power" points.
Fourth, I went to "Windy Valley" where it normally has the bird for the flying. I like to get the black looking bird with the red chest(Which I like to just call it the Robin), since it gives you a lot of "Fly" points.
Fifth, I once in awhile feed it oranges to raise it's stamina for no cost, since these grow on trees. It is also helpful to feed it mushroom once in awhile, which cost 300 Rings. This will make your chao to take shortcuts.
Sixth, once my Chao was strong enough, I did all the Beginner Races so I could unlock the "Jewel" Races.
Seventh, I took part of the "Jewel" Races once my Chao was strong enough. Each "Jewel" Race you win, will give you an emblem.
Just keep repeating this until your Chao is strong enough. It took me around 5-6 Hours in order for my Chao to become strong enough.
Chao Stats
------------------------------------
Swim Type (Which means let it have the most stats on "Swim" before it evolves. Though "Power" type may be better because a lot of the races relay on strength over swimming.)
Swim: Level 67/ 1,406 Points
Fly: Level 52/ 1,146 Points
Run: Level 60/ 778 Points
Power: Level 59/ 955 Points
Stamina: Level 47/ 751 Points
EDIT: Thanks to "ChemicalXzibit" for posting this comment!
"To make this easier, you don't have to get stamina and fly that high. My stats were Swim/Power/Run = 60 and Stamina/Fly = 12."
Saves some time figuring you can only carry 10 animals at once.
Edit: thanks TVthePunisher, apparently the Black Chao appears after clearing emerald course, so save that one for last!
1.) The Black Chao will appear in every course AFTER you beat the fifth Course, Emerald. The longest one that takes about 2 and a half minutes to finish. This Chao's stats are random, sometimes it will have beyond Lv. 99 in everything and will zip by everyone. Other times it will just be really good, anywhere from Lv. 70 to probably Lv. 90 in most stats. I made the mistake of completing Emerald before any of the others and I had him in every single race because of that.
2.) MAKE SURE YOUR CHAO IS RESTED PRIOR TO RACING! I have a high level Chao and I was constantly being dominated because I always bothered my Chao to level it (thus it always had the curly line above it's head and the same bored expression the black chao has). About 2-3 seconds into every race he'd fall down and stay down for almost 5 seconds before getting up and running. His speed, strength and everything else were also less than they could have been due to him being tired. So it's a good idea to both let your Chao rest and try to keep it in a good mood to where it smiles and acts happy when you pick it up, as after I let it rest...it dominated every race first time (except for one where the Black Chao's stats were overpowered).
It takes about 3-8 minutes, maybe more for your Chao to sleep and wake up. Don't enter a race while it's tired and needs sleep.
Another tip is after you have completed sonics story, go to emerald coast and kill the first 5 enemies before the springs, (two monkeys in trees, two car things and one monkey before springs) then push start and RESTART, you will still have the five animals and can get another five, then just exit the stage and go to the station square chao garden. Easy ten animals. This will mainly boost your swim and run, and a little fly.
[5 emblems]
This part of the game can be very time-consuming and tedious, depending on how you go about it. It can take anywhere from 5-10 hours.
There are five Chao races you need to win, each with two circuits: Beginner and Jewel. You have to win all the Beginner races before Jewel unlocks. You only get an emblem for completing each Jewel race.
Now, raising Chao can get quite complicated, and there are numerous guides out there describing all the varieties of Chao and various clever and esoteric ways you can breed them. As far as the race emblems are concerned, you don't need to bother with that. You just want to boost your Chao's stats as fast as possible, regardless of Chao type.
You access Chao in the Adventure Field. Use the Chao Garden that's in Station Square (left elevator in the hotel lobby). There will be eggs in there already when the game starts. Just play the game and let them hatch on their own.
[Chao Stats and Animals]
There are five stats to boost. When you play action stages, you can pick up animals after you defeat an enemy. The last 10 animals you get appear in the Chao Garden next time you go there (they will not appear if you complete the stage in Trial Mode). You can pick them up and go to your Chao, who will take it and get their stats boosted. Certain stages give certain animals that boost certain stats. The color listed here is the background color of tile you see when you grab the animal:
Swim = Yellow = Emerald Coast
Fly = Purple = Windy Valley
Run = Green = Speed Highway
Power = Red = Red Mountain
There are also some blue animals that appear in some stages and will always raise stats, but the stats are random each time. These are always safe to give to your Chao:
Skunk = Hot Shelter
Mole = Windy Valley
Koala = Emerald Coast
Some of the ones above will occasionally drop other stats – this is okay as it won't drop you below whatever current level you have for that stat, it will just drop the progress toward the next level (i.e. your stat number will not decrease).
[Feeding Chao]
Regularly visit your Chao in between levels in the Adventure field, and make sure you feed them every once in a while. There are fruits in the Chao Garden you can use (knock them off trees by grabbing the tree with and holding on the ), but these will only boost Stamina. To feed, just pick up a fruit and hold it in front of the Chao. It will take it and begin to eat. Note that you can overfeed your Chao, so if it throws the food away or looks sick, refrain from feeding it for a while.
The best food to feed them is Chao Fruit, which you can buy in the Black Market in the Station Square garden. Each one costs 200 rings. This fruit is good because it raises all stats equally, albeit slowly.
On occasion the Chao Fruit will disappear from the Market. If that’s the case, just finish some stages and check back later. It will eventually reappear.
[Ring Farming]
You may need to farm rings if you want to buy a lot of Chao Fruit. There are two ways you can do this. Using the Knuckles trick or playing action stages as Sonic. I prefer the action stage method, as it's faster, you can farm animals for your Chao at the same time, and you won’t waste as much time if you screw up.
Action Stages as Sonic
Merely play action stages as Sonic over and over again, making sure not to get hit so you end up with a good amount of rings. Play different stages if you’re trying to farm specific animals.
If you just want rings, play Emerald Coast. Don't worry about the time, just grab as many rings as possible and don't get hit (not a problem since this is the easiest level). I averaged around 400-450 in about 4:30 each time, so around 100 rings a minute.
The Knuckles Trick
Play Adventure Mode with Knuckles. Go around and dig in the ground somewhere ( + ). You will get random items from digging: rings, extra lives, power ups, etc. You’re looking for the electricity shield (not the normal shield) because this will attract nearby rings. Keep digging until you find it (it may take anywhere from a minute to 15 minutes).
Once you have it, go back to the Station Square hotel lobby (where the Chao elevator is). Take the staircase and stand on the rightmost switch. A trail of rings appears in the air. If you just stand on the switch, it will absorb the closest ring, which will respawn infinitely. Just stand there and rack up as many rings as you want. It takes close to 15 minutes to get 1000 rings, so around 65 rings a minute. The counter won’t go over 999, but anything over that will count, don’t worry.
You can let the game just run and do something else, but if you do nothing for around 10 minutes, the PS3 wireless controllers will automatically disconnect and pause the game (even if charging), so you will occasionally have to check it and un-pause the game.
When you have the amount you want, you’ll need to finish an action stage for it to actually save your rings so Sonic can use them (to buy stuff for Chao). I generally did Speed Highway, which you can find where you fight Chaos 0 at the very beginning of the game. Complete the level and all your rings will be saved. JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON’T GET HIT WHILE PLAYING THE LEVEL. You will lose ALL your rings if you get hit. That is the risky part and you will have wasted all that time farming if you get hit trying to finish the stage.
[Racing Chao]
There are two different circuits (Beginner and Jewel), each with five different races that require certain stats to win:
Pearl = Power, Run
Amethyst = Fly, Run
Sapphire = Power, Swim
Ruby = Swim
Emerald = All around
For Beginner, Emerald will not unlock until you've beaten the previous four. To win a Beginner race you generally need the noted stats in the list above in the range of 300-400.
Once Beginner is complete, the Jewel circuit will unlock. For these, you need to have stats around 900-1100 to win. I recommend a mix of occasional Chao Fruit and frequent animals to boost whatever stat you need for that race. Animals are definitely the quickest way to boost, so focus on the ones you need and knock off each race one by one. You don’t necessarily need to have a balanced Chao to win each race.
While racing, you can switch between Chao by using and on the d-pad. You can boost your Chao by pressing any button (, , , ) when there’s a sparkle around your Chao. This doesn’t happen often, so really there’s not much for you to do during the race. If you aren’t doing well to begin with, a boost isn’t going to make a difference. You have to place in first to win a race. No points for second place.
On the Jewel circuit, make sure you save the Emerald race for last. If you beat it prior to the others, a powerful black Chao will appear and win the other races regularly, making them a bit harder to complete. This happened to me and I had to boost my Power to 1100+ in order to win the Pearl race.
Locations and what animals live in them:
By the way, while you farm the run on Speed Highway, most likely the flight stat will accumulate on its own, so you can forget about Windy Walley as a whole.
1). Farming animals using a bug. Everything will take you about 30-60 minutes. In short, approach the chao at a distance at which the chao cannot take the animal from you on its own, but also at which, if you lower it to the ground, it will be as close to it as possible. Chao will lure the animal, but you can pick it up after that. Carefully select, quickly/sharply move the stick in the opposite direction from the chao, after which you do the same, but towards the chao.... If you did everything correctly, then you can repeat everything described above again. (I’ll try to make a video with this bug in the near future, for clarity... In general, you can watch speedruns on YouTube. Only there is this bug, they usually do it a little differently...)
2). Farm animals on levels. You will constantly have to run to the chao garden
- For the Swim stat you need yellow (cream) colored animals. They can be found at the beginning of the Emerald Coast. We enter the level and deal with all the enemies at the very beginning, and collect animals from them - the last enemy will be standing on the ramp near the spring. We kill him. You should have about 4-5 animals. After which, select Restart from the menu (or if you have no lives, fall into the water), and repeat the same thing... By the second time you should already have enough animals of the desired color (if not, repeat), exit in the menu and select Exit Game. We run to the chao garden and give the collected animals to the chao. We repeat all of the above until we get 99 lvl.
- For the Run stat, green animals are needed. They can be found on Speed Higway. Everything is almost the same as on the Emerald Coast. But only here we reach the first checkpoint. Instead of running through the building, we fall down, deal with all the enemies, collect animals - we repeat this 2 or 3 times, and then we go to the chao garden. Repeat until you get 99 lvl.
- For the Power stat, you need red animals, which are available at the Red Mountain level. As soon as we enter the level, we deal with the 3 body shirts that will stand in front of you, collect the animals, restart the level, repeat... Everything is the same as with other stats. Repeat up to 99 lvl (it makes sense to download only if you can’t pass Pearl Corse)
- If, despite the pumped-up Power stat, you still can’t complete Pearl Corse (or any other race because your chao crashes right after the start), then just let your chao sleep. Enter the chao garden. If the chao is sleeping, don't wake him up. Wait until he asks himself, then go to the race.
