On "Forgotten Tomb Normal" put a single lap and choose a character with a board and not a motorcycle. From the beginning, accelerate in a way to electrocute you in the door of departure. When the meter reaches 0, reaccelerate and normally you should be in eighth place. There, hug the bend and take a box situated towards the right of the row (we will say the second or third by leaving the right).
I am not guaranting a 100 % success but if you have an item which does not interest you, move to the Kinect to break and repeat. If you have the good item, finish the race by thinking of putting a single lap (I do not know if it is saved when we start again).

I haven't gotten that method to work. If I never kick dash, I end up in 12th.
What I did was wait about 2 seconds after the gate drops, then kick dash and lean to the right. You'll get an item box in 8th almost every time.
Also, you can restart after using the item and it'll still count.

Octo-Boosts only appear when you stay around 6th place in a normal race. Just avoid tricks and don't use the gear-boost to stay in the middle.
