The controls do work. The problem I believe is that peoble dont setup the Kinect properly. The Kinect works optimally for this game above the TV in an area with a lot of empty space and light. I tried this in my bedroom with the Kinect under the TV and it did not work well and that is because the Kinect doesnt have a good view of you. It needs to pretty much see your whole body for this game.

I bought a mount for the Kinect above my TV, moved it to the family room and played it during the day with the lights on and I won pretty much every race I played without any issues. The only time I had lost a race was because my Dog entered the space and threw off the game and there was an issue with the kick off with the Bike gear but I figured out I had to bring my leg up a little higher than normal to be detected. Other than that the Kinect had been pretty good at detecting my movements. I had also noticed it didnt work as well at night, mostly when it can to leaning backwards.
