Unlock all skills from the skills page. This includes the ones you can unlock with skill points and the ones you unlock automatically by talking with your friends in the beginning of each Island.

As you defeat enemies and progress the story, you will unlock skills that grant Sonic new combat abilities. If you are exploring and defeating the majority of enemies, then you will make a large amount of progress in this. I highly recommend getting the Air Trick skill as soon as possible because it is a great way to accumulate skill shards and get skill points quickly. There are 15 skills in total (12 unlock via skill points, 3 unlocked via story). If you would like, you can use purple coins to fish with Big the Cat and obtain fish tokens to exchange for skill shards. I recommend doing this after you max out all of Sonic's attributes since that takes a lot more time than this. It should take a total of approximately 224 skill points to obtain all skills.

Skills are, on the surface, a bit different than other games, but ultimately they're the same as any other open world game. In this game, when you defeat enemies/bosses in the open world, they can drop "skill pieces." You also have a chance of getting skill pieces from various breakable containers. Collect enough skill pieces to fill the meter on the lower right, and you'll get a skill point. Amass enough skill points to be able to afford a new Skill from the Skill tree. So, as a result, skill pieces function pretty much the same as XP in an RPG, and with enough you'll get more skill points to spend on new Skills.

There are only around ten total Skills to unlock, but they have huge skill point requirements (with the last one requiring 50 skill points alone).
