How to unlock the Can't Touch This achievement in Sonic Generations - Definitive Guide

Can't Touch This - 30g
Took no damage from the final boss and cleared the stage.

What they mean by take no damage is that you can’t get hit by any of the Time Eaters attacks. These include the missiles, the swatting hand attack, the clapping hand attack, and the laser attack. The flying debris does not seem to matter when going for this achievement.

This was a very frustrating achievement for me. Be patient, this may take a few tries to get a good rhythm down. Here are some tips to help you out.

- If you don’t know already, you have to be in the right dimension to catch up to the boss and hit him. If he’s inside the stream then you must be inside as well (in the 3rd dimension), and if he’s outside the stream then you have to be outside of it too (in the 2nd dimension).
- In my opinion, it’s much easier to dodge and attack the boss in the 3rd dimension. If possible, try to stay there. If the boss is outside the stream you could risk switching to the 2nd dimension to try to catch up to him, or stay in the 3rd to focus on collecting rings. If you boost close enough to a line of rings they will be magnetized towards you.
- If you're having trouble collecting rings, my advice is to go slow and when you see a line of rings coming up, line yourself up with them and boost. This may be easier to do in the 2nd dimension, but it's not impossible in the 3rd.
- It seems getting hit by the debris will not matter when going for the achievement. From what I've read on the internet, people seem to be able to get this achievement even if they hit the debris, so it's just the missiles, the swatting hands, the clapping hands, and the laser you must avoid.
- If you’re about of be hit by a missile, there are two things you can do to save yourself. You can shoot the other Super Sonic forward with the "A" button to destroy the objects, or you can press the "Y" button to switch to the other dimension and essentially be shot away from any danger. It will be harder to catch up to the boss if you choose the latter method, but I personally liked using the "Y" button to avoid danger. You cannot switch dimensions if the other Super Sonic is not with you!
- The swatting hand attack is easily avoidable. Keep boosting and fly away from the hand. Only a few times was I ever hit by this thing. It's mainly the missiles and clapping hand attack that you'll have to worry about.
- When you fly in for attack, the Time Eater will usually try to clap at you. To avoid this attack, I found going up and above the bosses face is easier, even if his upper hands are trying to smash at you. After he claps, fly down towards the target and keep holding the boost button, and you'll get an attack in.
- To avoid the laser, simply switching dimensions is usually enough to dodge this attack.
- There is no time limit for this achievement. Take your time and avoid danger most importantly!

Below is a video for how to get this achievement. Full credit for the video goes to Vandelay16 of Youtube, and thanks to Professor Pie for pointing it out to me.

I don't think you can, but I'm not positive on that. If somebody could confirm that, that would be great.

I Am4z1n9 AZ I - You mean when he goes to clap and hit you? I found that when I way playing I would hover around his upper face, then when he finished clapping I would move down for the hit.

Thank you for the new video Professor Pie, I've updated the video.

I have also heard from all over the web that you CAN hit the flying debris.. But i can't confirm it since I can't seem to even survive my falling ring count on this set of go_arounds...

Okay, I read around the net and the majority of people seem to be saying that getting hit by the debris doesn't seem to affect the achievement. I'll update the guide accordingly, but I'm still uneasy about it as some people still insist that the debris does count. Thanks.

My problem is just getting damn rings. 9 times out of 10 my problem is running out of rings rather than getting hit. And maybe it's just me but sometimes Sonic won't even freaking move. I was closing in to hit him before he clapped me but Sonic wouldn't even move up to avoid his attack. It was frustrating.

When I needed rings I would slow down until I spotted a line, then I would line up with it and then boost to get a bunch. I also found it much easier to get rings in the 2D perspective, although harder to dodge attacks.

I just held it. I don't see how releasing it will help you catch up to him. Make sure you're in the right dimension when chasing him or you won't catch up.

Not convinced this guide is accurate enough. I'm going through many times without getting touched by a missile. The hand attacks are almost impossible to dodge as the gameplay is so stiff - do I need to avoid them? And the laser attacks are random too.

Oh god, I forgot to mention the hand attack and lasers. Yes, you must dodge them too. I'm sorry about that. I'll update it.

Took about an hour. Avoid all but debris. Slow Down when u see rings near, boost once lined up and continue. Hold boost. If u let go of boost however u have more control of sonic as he can be stiff sometimes whilst boosting. Laser attacks press y to avoid. With Homing missiles work in a crescent moon type movement so the missiles follow you up and then miss you going back down. Hand clap move up LET GO OF BOOST FOR THIS!!!

Oh and good luck. This boss is boring and tedious, but even tedious as it is it isn't as tedious as tails's voice at the start. 3rd dimension works best. Only really move to 2nd as avoidance or to collect rings but if u change dimensions whilst chasing he will move away instantly. Have patience.

I think I lucked out when I got this achievement on about the 8th try. I got hit by debris and only had to hit him 3 times (3rd was the big fireball that you use R1+L1 on) - normally I have to hit him 4 times. It was on normal BTW

I agree the debris has some impact. I did this dozens of times without getting hit by Time Eater or any of his attacks, but never popping the achievement. I just tried it again after many months, this time deliberately avoiding all debris and it popped on the first try. I used 2D Sonic and A button to clear away the debris.

Took me 50 tries. A horrible achievement to say the least. For some reason I was doing it on hard after about 25 goes. Changed to easy got it after another 25 or so. The only difference it seemed was missiles seem more frequent and in larger numbers. 3 hours of my life. At least that's 100% for me.

Thanks for the tips! But OMG I bloody found this frustrating, took about 15 goes. Just keep the bosses weakspot in the middle of your screen and Sonic(s) actually catch up.

Just unlocked this today. Took 3 tries, thought I’d drop a quick comment on how I did it.

Start the level, IMMEDIATELY switch to 2D and build up to 150-170 rings. Don’t even try to catch up or damage the boss. Then switch back and stay in 3D the entire rest of the fight. Worked like a charm, didn’t need to worry about collecting anything and hit him all 4 times before even coming close to running out of rings.

Can confirm, you can be clipped by debris in the 3d stream.

You can hit the floating debris away using your partner's attack (A button). I'd suggest adding this video instead as its much more helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U03R_Bx6nMc
Also wanted to add that I don't think it matters if you get hit by the big laser he fires. I got hit by it briefly then switched to 2D and still got the achievement in the end.

Perhaps this is just me, but I found it easiest to follow the video guide for the first two hits exactly, but the third hit was always what screwed me.

For the third hit, switching in and out of 2d/3d is definitely great for avoiding the lock-on missiles and the only way that I am aware of avoiding the 3d laser. I found it best to stay at either the very top or very bottom of the tunnel until the hands attack in the 3d part, making them easier to avoid. This gives you a comfortable margin to move very far out of the way. For me it got dicey staying in the middle to get far enough above/below them while dodging missiles (I kept bouncing off the walls of the tunnel when trying to avoid everything from the middle).

There are a couple of tricks / things to be aware of:

- You need to position Sonic so that he is directly between the core and the camera (so graphically he is covering it) for him to catch up to the Time Eater - I've not seen this noted in any other guide.
- Use 3d mode almost all of the time, switch only when you need to to avoid the laser, hands or homing missiles (normally you can just dodge the hands and missiles though).
- Don't ever press A as it stops you switching dimension - debris doesn't count on this achievement and you can easily dodge it anyway.
- Sometimes Sonic gets"stuck" on the upper or lower "walls", usually when dimension switching while the "level" is sloping up or down. Switching back and forth should push him back into the middle.
- You can move much more when NOT boosting so if you need rings, slow down before boosting through them.
- You can avoid the crush move and not lose too much ground by hovering around his face. Sometimes you get lucky and it gives you an easy hit at the core too.
- And the best one last - turn off the annoying voices by reducing the sound effect level to 0 in the options.

First of all, this is NOT impossible. You're just gonna need a lot of patience.
I've been able to settle some things down as I tried (and eventually obtained) it:
- His "physical" (punches, clapping, etc.) attacks DO COUNT. Make sure you're not hit by any of those.
- Everything else (missiles, level debris, etc.) also counts.
- Make sure you have audio and rumble on. I know it can be annoying, but they are excellent tellers for whether you were hit or not.

For general tips on the boss/how to avoid attacks, follow the video posted by Sonic Cyanide:

This is by far the most frustrating trophy in the game however with a bit of knowledge and understand of Time Eaters attack patterns then this could be much much easier than it is. What makes this so intimidating is that not only can you not get hit by one of his many attacks is that you must manage your rings properly, as Super Sonics your ring count is slowly depleting and once it reaches 0 it's game over. Here are some tips that make this trophy a lot less frustrating:

  • During his first two phases there will be debris he throws at you, launching Classic Sonic at them with will destroy them or holding will have him destroy multiple ones.
  • Always hold if you want to close any gaps between you and Time Eater, of course if you see an obstacle that could get you hit to ruin your trophy you can let off it for a little bit but aside from that your hand must never let go.
  • Always stay in the Modern Sonic viewpoint never switch to Classic Sonic unless you want to avoid attacks
  • When Time Eater does move into the other time dimension side use this time to look out for Rings to help your Ring Management or if hes too far away from you look out for incoming rings (keep in mind boosting through him allows them to follow you allowing you gather more rings)
  • During the last phase DO NOT use Classic Sonics to launch him into debris, the debris will be relatively low in the final phase and if you were to launch him you can't switch to Classic View to avoid attacks which would be bad if he were to use his laser while you launch Classic Sonic
  • At the end of each of his phases or after he gets hit successfully lay off the boost and then get to collect more rings in the new dimensional wrap you appear in.

Understand Time Eaters attacks and how to avoid them will be the key to this trophy, if you are having trouble please refer to Kiid01's Can't Touch This Thread
