Mushroom Hill is the first level of the game and consists of two acts... you have to defeat the boss at the end of act 2 in order to unlock this achievement and you may do it with either Sonic or Knuckles.
If you are struggling for whatever reason - use the save anywhere feature on the pause menu.

Used to love Sonic games, now I just find them frustrating. Took ages just to get this achievement.

Mushroom Hill is the 1st Zone in the game and this achievement can be obtained while playing as Sonic or Knuckles. To defeat the boss, simply jump over or duck under the spike bars while chasing and attacking Robotnik.
