Collected all gold medallions in Bonus stage

How to unlock the No Way? No Way! achievement in Sonic Mania - Definitive Guide

Note to get this done quickly: Once you unlock debug mode by collecting 9-16 gold or silver medallions (the exact requirements are not yet clear), I'm fairly certain you can just spawn coins and checkpoints with it to get an endless supply of chances. I hope to confirm this shortly.

There are a total of 32 gold medallions you can unlock in Bonus stages. To enter a bonus stage, you need to cross a mid-level checkpoint with at least 25 coins. When you do, you'll see some stars appear above the checkpoint. Turn around and jump into the stars to start the Bonus stage.

You play each bonus stage sequentially. They get progressively harder as you play.

To get gold, you'll need to complete two primary objectives:

1. Collect all blue orbs.
2. Collect all rings.

If you hit a red orb, you lose. When you run over a blue orb, it turns red.

To spawn all the coins in the level, you'll need to make a ring around certain groups of blue orbs. Any group of blue orbs that's 3x3 or greater can turn into rings. Simply run in a circle around the blue orbs without going into the middle. Once you surround them with red, all the red and blue orbs turn into rings. This sounds complicated, but it's really quite easy. You can see it in each of the videos below.

The ideal way to do this is to intentionally leave a small group of blue orbs open that can't turn into rings and then go around turning all the groups of blue orbs into rings. Once the ring counter is zero and the blue orb counter just has your little group left, finish it off to complete the Bonus stage.

You can see an example of how to complete a Bonus stage in the video below:

Each time you complete a bonus stage, you unlock a special reward. You can play as many in a single level as you can fit in, so you might as well start working right away. The unlocks and medallions do carry over across playthroughs.

Track Progress? You can track your progress in the bottom right hand corner of the extra's menu.

Do Tracks Repeat? It's not clear if tracks you have gold on will repeat. You can definitely get repeats of tracks you failed before getting new ones.

Need some help?
Check out these two video's. They're not mine but they show decent routes for every map. When you enter a bonus level, check the colors of the floor pattern and then find that pattern in one of these two videos.

I won't give a negative vote due it just being some misinformation, debug mode unlocks just by collecting silver medallions, I haven't gotten any gold yet and I have it.

^ Same. It would be nice to know the requirements for unlocking debug mode.

These Bonus Stages are sending me dizzy!

I've just been replaying green Hill zone 1. There are three checkpoints I can get to fairly quickly on that level. The Second one comes almost immediately after the first one when you enter that hole in the wall (Just make sure you jump to stay in there). Then, by that point, I'll have 50 coins to become super sonic and I can get to the last one really quick. Then I restart and do those three all over again and so on. I suppose you could just get to the first checkpoint and then restart but I found doing all three takes about the same amount of time and you don't have to wait to restart.

If you get silver, do you have to do all the stages until that one comes back around?

Does anyone know if you can gold the same levels twice or does it just take the levels you've got gold on out of the cycle? Haven't really noticed yet

I haven't played them all, but haven't had one I've had gold on reappear. I have had ones I failed reappear though.

Maybe debug mode blocks that achievement for gold

I have only been using the "Mania Mode" where my save file is located and been going back and forth between two check points to get all 32 gold medals (I recorded all 32 on Xbox's Game DVR so everyone can watch), and it didn't pop for me either, so it's either an Xbox achievement app issue or something else that didn't pull through at that moment.

If anyone's having trouble with the stage that is a remake of the hidden 8th stage from Sonic 3 (the one where you're going along corridors with sphere+bounce+sphere/ring and always turning left), I have recorded an alternative method where you start from the centre and work the opposite way. Tracks you have on gold do not repeat until you have all gold medals.

Only tracks you have not beaten with a silver will show up until you get all silvers. At that point, you will cycle through the golds you haven't beaten. Once you've collected them all, you will cycle through all stages.

Also, this is cumulative over all save files.

If anyone is having trouble with some of these stages when it gets much faster, I stumbled across this unusual glitch if You want to call it that

I decided I would stream my Xbox to my laptop to play in another room, I found while streaming the game slows down massively

Not sure if it's just me but it definitely helped me out on a few stages , give it a try and see if it works for you

Debug is unlocked when you complete the game with any ending when you have 12 or more silver (or better) medals.

I've had the same two stages appear that I have gold on already and when I get gold again it doesn't add to the tracker. For some reason I'm getting 2 stages I've finished and 3 that I haven't but I'm missing 5 golds?

If you use debug, you wont get the gold medals. I just wasted a few hours collecting almost a dozen gold medals in one go and when I went to check the Extras screen afterwards, my number of gold medals had not gone up. Thanks for the misinformation.

UPDATE: I can now confirm after trying again without debug this time, I got the same stages I had previously got gold medals on. I got the gold again and this time it counted. Do not use debug.

This did not unlock for me back on October 7th of last year when I had met all the requirements. Would be nice if the developer and/or Microsoft fixed this because it was a pain to get.

@MintSpy great video. Really helped me with that stage. Also, if you're confused about how the spheres work based on the discussion above, I'll try to simplify. The bonus levels will continue to rotate until you have earned at least a silver sphere on the level. Once silver is earned (or gold if youve earned gold), the stage is removed from the rotation until ALL silver spheres are earned. Once you earn at least a silver on all 32 bonus stages, the stages where you need gold will return. You should never see a stage repeat itself once you've gotten gold.

So what exactly is the fastest way to get to a blue stage these days? Supposedly the "debug mode" doesn't work. Do i keep replaying green hill zone 1 until i get a checkpoint and restart ghz1 if i miss?

This sucks. I can't get a single gold medal. The stages move way too fast.

Mister Buds, give it time. Keep trying and your eyes will adjust to the speed. Eventually, it slows down and you will succeed. Persistence.

I actually got the achievement today. I didn't want to give up on it so I just kept trying for a little bit each day and one day it just clicked and I perfected a few stages. There were three or four stages that gave me a real problem but other than that it wasn't too bad.

The stages in this game definitely increase the speed faster than the old sphere stages. Even more evident if you watch videos of the old ones.

It's been a couple of years, but it's just not doable. Some fields are really large to deal with and remembering what places I've done (think about the jumping bumpers that toss you far away).
I've given up on these achievements at least

Confirming that debug mode does nothing for this now.
Confirming that that is a pile of rubbish: I set up the majority of the Bonus Stages via Debug Mode and both this and Full Medal Jacket unlocked upon obtaining my last Gold and Silver medal respectively.

Also I do share similar sentiments to Bort Bortson regarding the Bonus Stages, I feel multiple of them straight up force trial and error or looking up a guide for the solution, and if you manage to do that then imo you’re a bad ‘puzzle’, put bluntly.

I've unlocked Debug Mode during my 9th & 10th gold medals run wink

Still, you need to do this 32 times for the achievement...Debug mode is only for spawning right away a sign post and get another chance.

I think once you get Gold on a Blue Sphere stage, it gets removed from the rotation.

I also think once you get Silver, that stage doesn't reappear until you've got at least Silver on all 32 Blue sphere stages. So the silver medal stages temporarily get removed from rotation.

Then it will cycle all the ones you've got Silver on so you can get Gold on them.

I got the achievement rather quickly and I feel the game helps you and gives you the stages you actually need when ever you jump into the stars on the checkpoints.

Regarding weather tracks repeat or not. Just finished getting all golds and I worked out how they work.

They go in a set order, if you get silver or gold on a level, that level is removed from rotation. The number of levels will reduce until you have gotten silver/gold on every level.

Once you have one medal in every level, the rotation will change to all the levels you got silver on. This time, removing the level from rotation only if you get gold.

Once you have all golds, the level rotation goes back to including all levels.

This is a serious grind. I easily played many hundreds of hours in Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the Genesis when I was younger (I would make 2 save games of each character option, 1 with all chaos emeralds, another with the hyper emeralds, and redo it again and again), so much that the levels that were from those games in this game my muscle memory still kicked in 30 years later. The problem is that some developer somewhere is laughing their @$$ off because they made new levels with either no logical flow or that they save the hardest trick for the very end when you are going way faster than you used to in the Genesis games. It is doable but I've had less tedious ~4.6 ratio achievements that I didnt already have years of necessary skills than this.

My advice: take breaks and at the start of each level try and remember what trick there was in the level that made you mess up. It took about 3 days of grinding 2 hours a day to knock them out from scratch. Do not be afraid in the ones that are not a one way path to do some of the harder sections first, then come back and grab the coins leaving only two or 4 blue dots that cant turn into coins. You can jump over two bubbles if you time it right, and for those seemingly one way paths of 2 blue dots, take the first one and hop over the second, grab the hard parts while your speed is low so you can come back, get the coins, then just do an easy two jumps. Or for ones where the level is more circular and you make multiple trips along the same path, stick to the right (or same) side so you dont have to make extra movements and dodge red dots on the return trip. Taking breaks will clear you head if you start getting one map confused with another. There were several ones that for whatever reason my mind was just not processing correctly, or not seeing the path at the end. After taking a break I knocked it out and couldnt see what was causing me the problem.

Good luck

I wont bother covering off the runs to get the Perfect runs. But i will provide a tip to make it easier for you when you are attempting to do a level.

If you are doing a bonus level and you hit the red spheres, dashboard out BEFORE you return to the main game world. Once you reload the game, the next bonus level you get will be the same one you just failed.

As long as you have dashboarded before the game world pops up, the random seed, or whatever is used to determine the bonus level the checkpoint will give you next time you hit it, will stay the same. Allowing you unlimited attempts of the same map without having to deal with rotation.

Thank you! One of the big problems I’ve been having is that I can’t simply practice the same level over and over until I get it.
